The Experience

How beautiful can a landscape be? The sweeping Cerdanya valley that sits astride the Catalan-French Pyrenees comes high on the list. Here, Marc and Lidia have dedicated themselves to reviving a small hamlet to sustainable life in the Cadí-Moixeró nature park. A pure, almost monastic farmhouse where slippers replace boots at the door, Cal Calsot is now thickly insulated and full of light, has chunky timber furniture, organic hand-woven bedding and good simple comfort. With zero clutter, nothing stops the eye as it sweeps out towards those heart-stopping views – there’s one from every room. Marc and Lidia live here with their two young children, run an organic veal farm alongside the cluster of sustainable businesses they have inspired, serve locally-grown organic meals and are eager to give you an unforgettable experience of healthy natural life in the high pure air. A dying hamlet lives again in a lovely valley and this young couple have made it happen. They have so much to offer. Come for the glorious hiking and great skiing, nip over to France or Andorra, return for delicious food and good company, and leave inspired.

Great stay for two days. Only two hours from Barcelona and you are in a quiet village in beautiful mountain surroundings. And Lidia and Marc are great hosts in a beautiful B and B. Excellent food from local producers. Great hiking recommendations from Marc. Highly recommended place to stay! Nora and Henrik

We had a truly splendid 3 day stay with Marc & Lydia in Catalonia. The breakfasts are wonderful, the rooms large and beautifully designed, the beds firm and comfy, and there is access to superb hiking nearby. Lydia greeted us with her big smile and Marc made us these personalized hiking maps that were spot on. We highly recommend the take away lunches which include fresh juice, delicious sandwiches and other treats. Spend an afternoon with the friendly little black cat reading in the courtyard. We also met like minded guests over dinner and wine. Highly recommended.

We spent three nights relaxing and unwinding in this gorgeous renovated farmhouse. Marc and Lidia were wonderful hosts. Marc was full or recommendations and his map drawing was superb! Lidia's smile was a delight! The rooms are simple, calming and comfortable. The breakfasts, packed lunches and dinners delicious with all ingredients sourced (very!) locally. Thank you Marc and Lidia for a lovely stay.

If you want quiet, this is the place to go. If you want beautiful mountain walks, this is the place to go. If you are looking for good wholesome (very) locally sourced food made into the most wonderful simple dishes, what are you waiting for? In fact, this place has everything, except the annoying din of the modern world.

We had the most wonderful time staying with Marc and Lidia at Cal Calsot! Their farmhouse is perfectly located to explore and enjoy the nearby mountains and small towns. They are exceptional hosts and provide terrifically personalized recommendations and delicious food and drink to their guests! We couldn't recommend this place highly enough!

What a lovely place to stay. Cal Calsot is a beautiful place to stay situated in small Catalan village sat in the mountains, stunning views! We spent three nights and could have stayed much longer, the food was amazing all so fresh and local. Thank you so much Marc and Lidia for your wonderful hospitality.

Cal Calsot is a wonderful place! We spent there 4 nights and it was definitely not enough to discover the full beauty of this place. Not only the home location, surrounded by extraordinary mountain panoramas, but most of all its exceptional hosts, Marc and Lidia, make Cal Calsot a remarkable place. The home is very quite, perfect for a rest, with an unusual furnishings — pure and simple interior design at its best. And don't miss Marc's kitchen — his dishes are more than just a healthy and delicious food.

Lovely design, warm and helpful people, surroundings are beautiful, enjoyed a long walk in the snow with special snowshoes, and afterwords a lovely bottle of wine, so yes very tranquil!

We stayed in Cal Calsot for just 1 night and as soon as we arrived we realized that this was not enough! We were greeted warmly by Marc and Lidia who showed us to our room in which the decor and the furnishings were thoughtfully chosen and incredibly homely. The breakfast was a delightful plethora of local treats including fruits, cheeses and homemade jams. All in all, Cal Calsot is a wonderful base for exploring the Cadi mountains or the Pyrenees (the photos don't do the location justice); just make sure the delicious home cooked dinners and local wines on offer dont tempt you back too early!

We spent a wonderful winter week holiday in Cal Calsot. Marc and Lidia are great hosts! They did not only make us feel very welcome but have great suggestions on how and where to spend our days outdoors. We hiked in the mountains, with and without snow-shoes and went skiing in Andorra. Thanks to the wonderful handdrawn maps that Marc creates we never got lost. They decorate our kitchen wall as a reminder of a great week. Since our return we spent hours in our kitchen to try and cook as good as Marc does while planning how to put Lidia's enthousiasm for interior decoration into practice.

Local points of interest from Marc Garcia Garcia-Cairó

  • Walk to Prat de Cadí, one of the most emblematic places in Cerdanya. A route that runs inside the Cadi-Moixeró natural park and ends in a broad meadow beneath the imposing walls of the north face of the Cadi. You’ll love the silence.
  • Ride around Montellà on an electric bike. Lose yourself in extraordinary rural landscapes, authentic villages, escaping the noise of the roads, and discover the cultural values and the Roman heritage of Cerdanya. And without getting tired!
  • For bird lovers, our local guide will accompany you to discover the high mountain birds such as Dryocopus martius, Tetrao urogallus and large raptors like the Gypaetus barbatus, Neophron Nephron or the Gyps fulvus.
  • In Autumn, do not miss the craft, culinary and livestock fairs, like the La Fira de Sant Ermengol in La Seu d'Urgell, where you can taste the best local artisan cheeses and find handcrafted goods.
  • And in winter, enjoy the snow at the nearest resorts in Lles, Aransa, La Molina and Massella, or an hour’s drive away, in Andorra or France.
