The Experience

Merlin Farm is a real family affair: Darrel designed it, Lucy runs it; Darrel’s late father David painted the seascape canvases in the cottages. You feel away from it all here in this serene spot, yet the central location makes it ideal for exploring the rest of Cornwall.

Anyone who still holds on to the idea that ‘eco’ and ‘green’ are synonymous with a hair-shirt approach to life has not had the good fortune to stay here. Wondrously transformed from derelict barns, these stunning loft-like ‘cottages’, divided for privacy by high willow fences, are kitted out with the best of everything and completed with the lightest of impacts.

Energy is generated by the farm using solar panels, geothermal and underfloor heating. There are five beaches within five miles and wonderful dark skies at night.

Reviews

Such a lovely spot with all of Cornwall on your doorstep. Cottages are walking distance from beach and restaurants - there's plenty to do and see here. In summertime, after a day at the beach, open up the glass doors and sit in your private courtyard, taking in the countryside. In winters, cosy up on a comfy sofa by the wood-burner after wild walks on the coast. High-end eco-comfort.

This place will make your heart sing. Stunning views, a path through woods on a short walk to the beach or to the pub in St Mawgan (or both). Merlin is a family farm and the hosts are genuinely welcoming, going out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. Our cottage for 2 (Daymer Studio) was superb - wood burner, wooden/Cornish slate floors and high quality furnishings. We went for 2 weeks in December for rest and recuperation. Can't recommend it highly enough. We plan to return in 2014.

Location

The neighbourhood

The cottages sit side by side overlooking the Vale of Lanherne (lots of walks) and fields where the ponies live. The farm is brilliantly tucked away, though the nearest shops are just a quarter of a mile’s ramble from the front door. The walk to Mawgan Porth beach is very manageable, even with tots in tow, or hop in the car and it’s a mere 10 minute-drive to Watergate Bay.

Local points of interest from Lucy Wheeler

  • 10 mins walk to Mawgan Porth Beach plus Beautiful Countryside and Coastal walks direct from the farm. There are 5 beaches within 5 miles!
  • Less than 10 mins drive (3.6 miles) to Watergate Bay. Padstow, Rick Stein's Seafood Restaurant & Cookery School less than 20 mins drive (8 miles) . Or dine in and take advantage of our meal delivery service.
  • Enjoy some 'me time' with 2 Day Spa's within 15 minutes walk from the farm or enjoy spa treatments in the comfort of your cottage.
  • Enjoy the dark skies, the Milky Way can be viewed right on our doorstep at the cliffs of Bedruthan.
  • Approx 30 mins drive to The Eden Project (18 miles)

Introducing

Lucy Wheeler

The Wheelers moved to Merlin Farm as a family in 2003; the eco cottages came along six years later. Architect Darrel designed the loft-like buildings and wife Lucy runs the show. Passionate about leaving as little an impact on the environment as possible, the duo devised all the green features and even generate their own electricity – get them talking about all things eco (or where to find the best cream tea), or text for recommendations.
