The Experience
Wave goodbye to the tourists trundling west and drop past banks of wildflowers to an unstirred hamlet where kingfishers, egrets and buzzards thrive alongside friendly locals – pick up cider and fresh eggs from the farm next door. The setting may be poetic but there’s everything for a boisterous family holiday here; dinghies and kayaks can be launched from your orchard garden and an old stone bridge is perfect for competitive Pooh sticks.Inside, warm up around a cream Aga or the wood-burner in convivial, whitewashed rooms with space to come together or spread out. Dry land explorers will find a network of walks and bike rides from the doorstep – refuel with decent coffee and a croissant at Lerryn’s village shop, or a pint in the Ship Inn while ducks waddle past.

We had a lovely week at Penpoll, the location was so quiet and secluded and our grandchildren had a wonderful time playing in the creek. The cottage is like a home from home, very clean, well stocked with everything we needed and thoughtfully decorated. All in all a beautiful cottage in a beautiful place, hidden away in the Cornish countryside.

Another happy week at Penpoll - we keep returning to enjoy this lovely house. Since our last visit no expense has been spared on the new terrace area with a gorgeous view straight down the creek, pizza oven and bbq - the perfect spot for a sundowner. The house is so cosy and the beds very comfortable. Sarah Jane and her housekeeper keep it all immaculate and the garden is beautiful. Great walks and well placed for Fowey - the pasties at Lerryn Village shop are unmissable! We highly recommend Penpoll.

We have returned to Penpoll a number of times of the years - when the children were young (sailing lessons at Fowey Gallants ) and again this year for a family celebration week over Easter. It never fails to charm - a combination of the idyllic setting with a lovely view from the terrace down the estuary, cosy atmosphere and wonderful walks. No expense has been spared on the new terrace area with pizza oven, decking and seating - the perfect spot for an evening drink. The house is beautifully maintained, the beds very comfortable with lovely linen. Thank you Sarah Jane - we hope to return soon

We had a magical time at Penpoll My young children and I loved getting the ferry across to Fowey, walking down to the secluded beaches, getting into the sea and then coming back to dry our socks on the aga and drink hot chocolate by the fire! A lovely stay, thank you!

Penpoll is a magical place , very calm and peaceful with beautiful views of the creek. The cottage is charming - quirky but comfortable and well equipped. It is well situated for local towns like Fowey ( do take the ferry at Boddinick ) but is well away from the hustle and bustle -especially in summer. Best of all is watching the sun set from the terrace and the wildlife on the creek - glorious!

A wonderful cottage in a magical setting. The house has everything you need for a comfortable family stay. The terrace was fantastic with many happy evenings playing cards and enjoying your view. Lovely to have the wood fired pizza oven! The views over the creek were so calming and we liked the cosy sitting room with wood burner for colder evenings. Great location-fab combo of quiet cottage setting but only 10 mins from Fowey. Highly recommend!

Our family had a wonderful Spring stay at Penpoll. The setting opposite the creek is second to none! We enjoyed the peaceful surroundings and local river walks as well as longer trips to nearby beaches and the Lost Gardens of Heligan. The cottage is wonderfully equipped and felt like a real home. We enjoyed cooking in the kitchen and outside on the pizza oven. The gardens are glorious and the cottage has good WIFI. The trip into Fowey and Polruan is very easy and a delight by either ferry. And there's a great local pub and shop at Lerryn which is walkable. We definitely want to return!

A lovely cottage to escape to. It feels secluded and remote, yet has amenities nearby and also good access to Fowey. The cottage itself is homely and comfortable, with everything you might need. There is also a great terrace to relax on that perfectly overlooks the creek!

We stayed at Penpoll for three weeks and wish we could have stayed longer! The house has a lived-in warmth you rarely experience in holiday accommodation and we felt at home after the first cup of coffee. Sarah-Jane is an exceptional host and we never lacked for anything. Every room in the house has a unique view of the river and we were visited by the resident kingfishers almost every morning of our stay. It’s a truly special place in the most beautiful spot in Cornwall and we will definitely return.

This is a gem of a place - we escaped London to stay here for a long weekend and it delivered exactly what we were after; homely, surrounded by great natural beauty, peaceful, and prepared by a thoughtful host who clearly has invested plenty of time and money to ensure guests have a great experience. It has plenty of character, and feels lived-in and loved more so than other holiday lets I've stayed in. I would definitely recommend this as a base to relax, recharge, and experience Cornwall.

Spent a wonderful long weekend at Penpoll with friends. Felt wonderfully secluded but close to the beautiful town of Fowey. The cottage idyllic and having a glass of wine by the creek at sunset before relaxing in front of the log fire was the perfect way to end the day. We had a great time, hired a boat for a day, played some golf, had a beach bbq followed by beach cricket and enjoyed some of the tasty local restaurants (recommend the seafood). All within easy range of the cottage. The cottage was beautiful, well-stocked and incredibly homely. Thank you for a lovely stay!

This was my third stay at Penpoll and I’m sure it won’t be my last. It’s a lovely cottage, with everything you would need / expect from a holiday let. It is also in an idyllic location, which feels tucked away and secluded, but yet remains easy to get to local hubs (like Fowey). Thanks for a lovely stay!

We are a family of 4, two kids 9 &10 plus 2 dogs. The cottage was more than perfect. Amazingly well equipped, very comfortable, clean and not forgetting stylish. The creek was the biggest hit with the kids playing with the dogs in and out of the water. Area stunning and lovely walks. Small shop in Lerryn had everything we needed. Kayaking, horse riding great fun and beaches beautiful and quiet. Very relaxing, peaceful picture perfect holiday. A real Gem.

Location
The neighbourhood
Water, water, everywhere is the main attraction, Penpoll Creek meandering from the cottage to the River Fowey then out to the coast. Canny swans and ducks know the right moment to appear at the gate for feeding time and massed banks of primroses, orchids, and riverside ferns and mosses are all around. You can take the ferry over to Fowey from Bodinnick, 3 miles away, for great galleries, restaurants and beaches, but the real point of Penpoll is losing yourself in nature.
Local points of interest from Sarah-Jane Muir
- A wide choice of fabulous beaches. See for yourself why this coastline inspired so many of Daphne du Maurier's novels.
- Slipway and boatyard for boat launching/ mooring less than 2m away or launch your small dinghy and kayaks from Penpoll's orchard. Friendly RYA sailing courses run regularly in Fowey.
- Wonderful restaurant, pubs and clothes/interiors shopping, Galleries galore in Fowey via Boddinick Ferry, 3m.
- Enjoy magnificent cornish gardens, especially in the Spring. The Eden Project is under 20 mins away. Other Gardens, such as Heligan, Lanhydrock, Caerhays Castle, Pencarrow, Tregrehan, Trebah, Tregothnan, and many more, are all within easy reach by car.
- Miles of magical rural footpaths right from the doorstep of Penpoll. Soak up the peace, close to the creek's abundant birdlife as you walk along it's banks, or walk the stunning Southwest Coast from Polperro to Polkerris - an epic day!
- A genuine escape with stunning river views and teaming with birdlife, beautiful Egrets and Kingfishers perch in the orchards, Resident Ducks and swans show off and wait to be fed, right outside the gate!

Introducing
Sarah-Jane Muir
Sarah-Jane and her family have relished escaping here from the congested South East for over twenty years. The children have grown up on these holidays, developing enduring loves for water sports and the outdoor life. Sarah-Jane finds Penpoll reviving more than anything, and loves hearing that other families are captivated by her magic corner of Cornwall too.
We just returned from a perfect week at Penpoll. It was absolutely magical. The peaceful setting, the comfortable furnishings, the artwork and books, the multiple outdoor areas, the apple orchard and the views! Bucolic. It has to be one of the most restorative spots we’ve ever stayed. We did not want to leave. Sarah-Jane was a delight to communicate with. A truly special area of Cornwall, full of history, associations with literature and a haven of peace. Thank you.
