The Experience

It’s a light and airy open-plan space with a table in the window for those glorious views, a comfy sofa and lots of games and books in case the weather turns. Pale colour schemes are restful, the kitchen has all you need to cook for two and you’ll find basics in the cupboards, locally-sourced snacks or biscuits and plenty of kindling and logs for the wood-burner. It couldn’t be cosier.

Off here is a small bedroom with a big bed, lovely white cotton sheets, plump pillows and duvet; a little shower room is just the ticket after a day spent walking or shopping. Outside is gorgeous with a decked area, table and chairs, those wide views and plenty of birdlife in the mature oak and beech trees – don’t forget to bring binoculars. There’s a shared barbecue for long light summer evenings feeling quite private.

There are magical footpaths from the door, through woods, to the river and back, or head to pretty Calstock for a pub lunch.

We think you'll love

  • Snuggling in with the wood-burner blazing on a cold winter night, listening to the wind in the trees
  • Bringing your dog and enjoying some wonderful walks - there's a dedicated wet and muddy dog washing area outside
  • Spending time on the decking with a cup of tea or a glass of wine, taking in the view, watching birds

Reviews

The Count House at Okel Tor has a lovely feel to it - small but thoughtfully set up with everything you could need for your stay. The history of the place is evident and it's hard to believe how busy and industrial it would have been down here 150 years ago. Now, it's all so peaceful, calm and natural. Calstock too is a gem of a village for locals and tourists alike- quaint, quirky and vibrant.

Our second visit and it certainly doesn't disappoint again. The cottage is peaceful and quiet, with the most amazing views that make every stay special. It's the perfect place to relax and unwind. We'll definitely keep coming back! Thank you Jon and Jenny.

Anne, Lewes, Sussex

We have just spent 4 nights in the Count House at Okel Tor - our 3rd visit. We absolutely love the peace and tranquility and the wonderful view of the river. The local area is beautiful with some fantastic walks nearby. The house itself is very comfortable and well equipped.

Perren and Joy

OK, we are Cornish and only live an hour away but we absolutely love the Tamar Valley, especially Calstock and Cotehele. Only just discovered The Count House and Okel Tor Mine and it is a wonderful place to stay. We stayed at Danescombe mine a few years ago when we fell in love with Calstock, but the views from Okel Tor Mine are so much better, and the grounds and woods are much more interesting. Beautiful place and lovely people providing a perfect cottage to stay in. Thanks to Jon and Jenny for a wonderful stay.

Phil and Wendy, Dorset

My oh my, what a relaxing break. Our second trip to The Count House so we knew what to expect and we weren't disappointed! A place of quiet and restful solitude - no noise other than birdsong, everything you want is provided and nothing you don't need. Bring some good books and curl up by the log burner. Take the Tamar Line train from Calstock to Bere Ferrers, have lunch, do a circular walk and catch the train back again - bliss!

Location

The neighbourhood

You can walk in 20 minutes to good pubs - The Boot Inn and The Tamar Inn. For special occasions The Horn of Plenty restaurant is five miles. Calstock has a shop, a café, a small art gallery and a very good ice cream shop. There are busy boat trips up and down the Tamar to Plymouth, boats and canoes are always passing by dropping off tourists in summer. Visit Cotehele House (N.T.) for spring flowers.

Local points of interest from Jon & Jenny Tully

  • Nature and heritage entwined in a unique setting. Explore the woodland and riverside paths and archaeological remains. Experience the tranquillity, sweeping views across the river and dark night sky. Perhaps sketch or paint, or simply relax with a book.
  • Enjoy a complimentary guided tour of the ruined mine buildings, including the most interesting archaeological features on the 16-acre site and an explanation of the mine’s history. Just ask when making your booking or on arrival.
  • Celebrate your 10th (tin) anniversary in a Cornish tin mine! Each cottage has been carefully restored, tastefully decorated and fitted with a log burning stove to create a comfortable and cosy retreat, perfect for a couple seeking a romantic break.
  • The National Trust's Cotehele is a short walk along the river - a medieval house with gardens spilling down to an historic quay where you can enjoy a cream tea or ice cream. National Trust properties Buckland Abbey, Anthony and Lanhydrock are also nearby.
  • Great walking. The Tamara Way coast-to-coast path passes right through Okel Tor Mine and the spectacular views from Kit Hill are nearby too. Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor are less than 30 minutes’ drive and lovely Cornish beaches not much further.
  • The local area really is “Beyond Paradise”! Explore nearby locations for the famous TV series, which include Calstock, Pentillie Estate and Looe. Or take a train on the Tamar Valley branch line to Plymouth & catch the ferry back to Calstock.
