The Experience

Grab a surfboard or a kite: this hotel kits you out to ride the waves with the Extreme Academy surf school. But you can still lounge around, and if you have kids, it’s a treat; young children can make friends in the popular Kids’ Zone while you disappear for a massage or a swim in Swim Club.

It’s all about the views here, with walls of glass in The Living Space (a huge café/bar), a 25-metre infinity pool that gazes over the ocean, and a terrace strewn with loungers. This large hotel sits directly above one of the best sandy beaches in Britain – two miles long.

There’s a large ocean room to head home to with an open fire, a sauna and cliff-top hot tub with stunning views, and food that’s fresh and delicious. Eat in the bar or Zacry’s the grill, or it’s only 50 paces to the The Beach Hut for a burger. Coastal light floods through the windows of the sea view suites, the family suites have separate bunk rooms for children, The Village apartments have their own kitchens and open-plan lounges and many of the bedrooms are dog-friendly.

What a delightful hotel - very spoiling and at the same time, totally unpretentious. It's so lovely to see many different generations enjoying this space which feels more homely than you would expect from a hotel with many rooms. Dogs are welcomed and add to the convivial atmosphere. The pictures tell the story - views from every angle, great food and drinks. I hope to return soon. Thank you.

The neighbourhood

Watergate Bay is a vast stretch of beach on the edge of Newquay, six miles from Padstow. Foodie inclined and definitely sportif, this multi-apartment hotel on the other side of the road offers four restaurants on site, a 25m infinity pool and a surf and kite school. Turn left down the coastal path to reach St Ives, turn right to reach Port Issac. Whichever way you go, the seascape is sensational.
