The Experience
Beneath watercolour-washed Cumrew Fell, in the quietest corner of Cumbria’s Eden Valley, rests the Hayloft – simple on the outside, light-filled and cosy within (a wood-fired biomass boiler keeps you toasty). There’s a skilful mix of space, comfort, originality and tradition here; pull off your walking boots and pad up wooden stairs to the lovely long-beamed living space. Sofas cling to the wood-burner; a big dining table accompanies a brilliantly kitted kitchen.
Settle into the snug lined with books and with its own view. Down the beamed corridor are two bedrooms: a super king and a twin with en suite shower rooms. The Hayloft adjoins the Georgian house where the owners live but you’re pretty private here, and may use the walled garden; fire up the barbecue on a summer’s evening.
Black grouse can be spotted on the local RSPB reserve; the Coast to Coast cycle route starts from the door; fell walks abound.

We had a wonderful stay in Cumrew cottage. The loft is beautiful, comfortable and clean. The grounds are gorgeous, a real treasure! The tennis court was great for the kids. I adored the beautiful walled garden and the fresh vegetables were a treat! Kirsty, Andrew, George, Juno and Pele are wonderful hosts, so friendly and inviting. We would love to come again. We highly recommend. Sagiv Family

The Hayloft is a fantastic place to stay. Perfectly position to explore the Eden Valley, the Lake District and Northumberland Hadrian’s Wall. It is very well appointed accommodation with plenty of space. Warm welcome with home made bread. Fantastic garden and tennis court which guests can use. The hosts are delightful - lovely people and nothing is too much trouble. We will be back. Thoroughly recommend.

Had the most wonderfully relaxing stay at the Hayloft. Our accommodation was excellent and we had all that we required during our stay. The gardens were well maintained and a table and chairs available to sit out during the most amazingly sunny week. Also managed a few games of tennis on the well maintained court which was painted during our stay and looked amazing when finished. We hoped for a relaxing week and we were able to achieve this. I would recommend a stay at the Hayloft - it’s not far from the Lakes but you are able to return to the peace and quiet this area allows.

The Hayloft is located in such a peaceful and beautiful part of the countryside. The facilities are homely and comforting with lots of activities to take part in on site or locally. With a tennis court and walled garden there is plenty to do. There is also an adventure park/tarn nearby if you want to take part in water sport activities or if you want a nice walk. Kirsty and Andrew were lovely hosts, they are so welcoming and friendly. Such a wonderful place to stay and we can't wait to go there again!

Location
The neighbourhood
The glorious Eden Valley is just as beautiful as the Lake District but with no crowds. You can walk through the fields to the Duke of Cumberland pub for good food, or over the fells to Newbiggin. There are endless walks along the river Eden through farmland with good swimming spots. The owners' son is sous chef at the Michelin-starred Dog and Gun in Skelton, 30 minutes for a celebration meal.
Local points of interest from Andrew & Kit Hollings
- Walk from Howtown on Ullswater, round the lake to Glenridding and take the famous Ullswater steamer back. Stunning lakeside walk with cream teas available en route! Or, for those seeking action on the water, Eden Outdoor Adventures are the folk to help.
- Hadrians Wall is only a short drive away. Relive history with your family at nearby Birdoswald fort - the kids will love the interactive museum. Alternatively, plan to walk the wall with friends using us as a base. Ask for suggested itinerary.
- Fancy a tour around a working mill, a river walk with a mysterious cave and a prehistoric stone circle thrown in, Little Salkeld Watermill, 20 minutes away, is the place to go. Bread courses available.
- Take a drive, or a cycle (not for the faint-hearted!) up Hartside to Alston, the highest market town in Britain. Enjoy a feast of quirky shops, nearby Nenthead Mines for fascinating local industrial history, and a trip on a steam train.
- Ever watched sheep race round a track, driven a mini Land Rover, dared to descend a 24 foot demon drop slide? Walby Farm Park provides bucket loads of outdoor fun, and also boasts Cumbria's largest indoor play area. It's a mere 15 minutes' drive from us.
- Tennis courts fully refurbished in Spring 2021 for a match worthy of Wimbledon. Rackets and balls provided if required. Ball-hitting practise available with active, well-coached Hollings family members, if they're at home!

Introducing
Andrew & Kit Hollings
Kirsty (an ex-teacher) and Andrew (retired GP) fell in love with the valley and its fells, from which you can see all the way to the Solway Firth. Kirsty now works in a local museum and organises workshops for school visits locally. She's also a bit of an eco warrior and swam the river Eden from source to sea with others to try and save it from pollution.
We had a wonderful stay in Cumrew House. Everything was to our liking. The house is spacious and beautiful, the grounds were wonderful. I enjoyed the beautiful walled garden and fresh grown greens for salad. The boys loved the tennis court. Kirsty and Andrew are lovely hosts and so was Juno. We highly recommend. Thank you wonderful family for a lovely stay.
