The Experience

Big grey gates open from a typical winding Devon lane to a beautifully-kept cobbled courtyard surrounded by old stone barns – some restored, some not. The first floor is an open plan vaulted space with large windows for that view, sheepskin-covered window seats and ample squishy sofas. Find board games, toys and books for rainy days and a gas ‘log’ burning stove to keep things cosy.

The kitchen has lots of kit for keen cooks, a large oak dining table and plenty of pretty Portmeirion pottery for sociable meals. Open the American style fridge to find a bottle of bubbly or cider. You’re also left a super guide to the area with advice about walks, places to eat and things to do. Bedrooms downstairs are decorated with the owner’s art, have proper linen sheets and each pillow has a bar of the Bly’s special chocolate.

A shared space sells home-produced honey and Salcombe Dairy ice cream. You can borrow wellies and a barbecue.

Reviews

A wonderful place for a break - great views with not a house in sight. Modern, well converted barn with plenty of interest in the area.

Jan, London

This is a beautiful house situated in the rolling Devon hills with wonderful views. The house is spacious with two lovely large ensuite shower rooms. Beds are very comfortable. We were welcomed by Dan and had a special delivery of some chocolates on Easter Sunday - thank you Dan. Very spacious house. Lovely towns close by include Totnes and Dartmouth. We will be back!

Johanna, Farnham

We received such a warm welcome and loved staying at Fledgling Barn. Very comfortable and stylish. Highly recommended!

Wow what a beautiful place to stay. We had the warmest welcome, the barn is set in a gorgeous location with plenty to see and do locally. The guide provided was 5 Star and the little touches of locally sourced soaps, chocolates and even toilet rolls were lovely! We would highly recommend this place to stay, for a family or a couple. Thank you

Fantastic stay at the Fledgling Barn. The host was extremely welcoming and went out of her way to ensure we had everything we needed, even digging out toys and books for our daughter. The barn itself was a real pleasure to stay in - both the interior decoration, finish and build quality were really good, meaning the place was really easy to settle into. Lots of sunshine throughout the morning meant we spent plenty of time on the terrace. It was then cosy at night with views across rolling hills so it was always a lovely place to come back to after visiting the local area. Highly recommended.

We brought our four month old son on his first ever holiday to Fledgling Barn and we all had an excellent stay. The barn is beautiful and really comfortable. The location is peaceful and Lucia is a welcoming and helpful host.

Caroline, London

We have recently returned from a 10 night stay at Fledgling Barn, having had a most wonderful relaxing experience. The accommodation is extremely well equipped, and fixtures and fittings are of a very high standard. We self catered very easily using great quality affordable produce from local farm shops and butchers; even cooking our Christmas lunch with ease. As independent travellers, this property, and the wonderful hosts, were perfect. I am very happy to report a fabulous trip to South Devon and would highly recommend the Fledgling Barn.

No expense has been spared in this beautifully restored barn. Enjoy comfy beds with luxurious linen, large walk-in showers or a soak in the magnificent free standing bath tub after a long walk on the nearby beach. Prepare a feast in the well-equipped kitchen or visit one of the nearby foodie eateries. Or just relax peacefully on the terrace watching swallows fly and taking in the amazing rural view.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're surrounded by 10,000 acres of farmland. Chillington is a 15-minute walk or 5-minute drive for a village store and a pub. Stokeley Farm Shop and Tap House (10-minute drive) has a butcher, deli, fish counter, fresh bread and locally-grown veg along with a café serving excellent pizza, or visit the tap room for South Hams Brewery beer. Kingsbridge is 5 miles - book a table at Twenty Seven for a treat.

Alongside running the holiday barns Lucia is an integral part of the family business – the award-winning Salcombe Dairy Ice Cream and the Bean to Bar Salcombe Chocolate, both very delicious.
