The Experience

Half way up East Hill, are 17 acres of old apple farm. Among hens, farmhouse, gardens, play areas and a big communal courtyard with picnic tables are six cottages – heaven for kids. It’s pampering too, thanks to owner Jacqueline’s treatments: Indian head massages, Japanese facials, reflexology. Quarenden Cottage, the former apple store, is the largest in the row and all have a wood-burner apart from the one-bedroom cottage. They are light and bright and cosy.

Bathrooms have delicious local soaps, the open-plan kitchens have a cream tea waiting for you and the bedrooms fit under the eaves. The owners live in the farmhouse and Jacqueline makes marmalade, lemon curd, apple juice and fruit crumbles in season; there’s also meat from the farm next door.

Choose from their great list of attractions: the Donkey Sanctuary, Crealy Adventure Park, the Jurassic Coast Hopper, or sign up to an on-site cookery or photography course.

Reviews

We had a wonderful stay at Mazzard Farm, Ruud and Jacqueline are fantastic hosts and looked after us very well. The grounds are stunning with lovely spaces for children to play and explore, although the star attraction for our 3-year-old was undoubtedly Rory the (very patient) dog. There is plenty to see and do within reasonable driving distance of the cottages, with the Donkey Sanctuary, Sidmouth beach and Pecorama being just a few of our favourites. We would certainly recommend this as a lovely place for a holiday!

We had a wonderful stay at Mazzards farm. There was loads for the children to explore, from woods, orchards and playground. And an Aladdin's cave of toys, bikes and books to play with. All three generations enjoyed the comfy beds and clean, spacious accommodation. It was a thoroughly enjoyable stay in the beautiful Devon countryside.

Jess, London

Great place. Well run. super friendly. Electric car charger! Amazing gardens...

Sam, London

Situated in the bottom of a wooded valley, Mazzard Farm is a special place, particularly for families. Lots of things for children to do on site and plenty of places nearby to visit. Only 6 miles to the coast at Sidmouth! These spacious, well-appointed cottages exude rustic charm, but have many modern conveniences.

Andrea, Sawday's Inspector

Great place in a lovely setting. The owners are helpful and friendly and they offered us lovely scones and cream and jam on arrival. The cottage was spacious and homely and our toddler loved the garden, the goats, chickens & toys. We enjoyed some fun days at the beach in Sidmouth, Branscombe and Beer, which are just a short drive. Highly recommended!

Elisa, Midsomer Norton

This was our 3rd stay at the wonderful Mazzard Farm. Paradise for kids, relaxing for adults. Near enough to the town and beaches to be able to get out and about easily, but also feels like you’re miles from anywhere. We definitely recommend for anyone with little ones who love open spaces!

Sarah, Buckingham

We stayed in Mazzard farm in the last week of August 2019 with our two yound children (4 &6) and grand parents. We had a great time in this quiet location, far from any noisy urban environment. The weather was good so we had BBQ and watch the stars. Lovely garden with great tasty apples, for the pigs too. The children loved it and it was a pleasure to walk around discovering all the secrets of the valley.

Benjamin, Bristol

Our family stayed in Medlar Cottage for a long weekend in January 2015 with our two year old daughter and could not fault Mazzard Farm. The grounds are perfect for exploring with little ones and the cottages are well stocked with everything you could need, including the necessary cots, monitors, high chairs and toys which toddlers require! Nearby Ottery St. Mary has plenty of lovely foodie shops, perfect for buying local produce to cook and enjoy back in front of the log burner in our cottage. We are certainly planning to return next year and would highly recommend.

Danielle

A really wonderful stay - very welcoming hosts, beautiful grounds and splendid accommodation. It was our first holiday with a new baby and we could not have been better catered for. We hope to return one day; highly recommended.

Location

The neighbourhood

The countryside is very rural and filled with woods so the peace is absolute. You can walk to a farm shop at Coldharbour Farm in about 5-10 minutes along a lane with next to no traffic. They also run a field kitchen overlooking the valley and sell good food and alcohol. The nearest good restaurant is The Rusty Pig at Ottery St Mary, 4 miles away. The owners have written their own 'Rough Guide to East Devon' - very useful!

Introducing

Ruud Jansen Venneboer

Ruud and Jacqueline brought the apple farm in 2008 and developed the cottages from barns opposite the main farm house. They have goats, baby lambs in spring and hens in the orchard. They are passionate about recycling and renewable power - and welcoming guests of course.
