The Experience

This picture-postcard cottage in a sleepy Devon village is great for families; French windows open from the cosy sitting room straight into the garden. A sun-trap with a big lawn for games, patio barbecue and a cabin hideaway with a big squishy sofa.

The neat kitchen is made for families; ice packs for beach picnics and all the kit you need to cook a Sunday lunch. The ground floor twin and shower room are great for those who’d rather not climb stairs. Upstairs, two doubles and a bunk room look out over the garden and share a bathroom, with roll top bath.

For beach days, you’re spoilt for choice – popular Putsborough is a 40-minute cross country stomp, or a three-minute drive. Walk along the bay to reach Woolacombe for sandcastles and ice creams, or try surfing at cool Croyde. Cycle through wooded valleys on the ‘Tarka Trail’, a former railway line, or explore the endless dunes at Braunton Burrows.

Reviews

A great spot: cottagey and family-comfortable with an excellent kitchen and a south-facing garden. Lovely nearby beaches/dunes and good food...

Speedwell made our first combined Christmas of my family being with my partners, perfect in so many ways. The cottage is something out of a movie like the Holiday, we are semi locals and will always say Georgeham is a beautiful village, waking up Christmas morning to the church bells and the sound of the stream was beautiful. The cottage had everything you could possible imagine to host and was perfect for a winters break. However, it’s making me want a staycation in the summer to enjoy the terrace! The host Lucilla was brilliant in every way possible and we can’t thank her enough!

Nick

Lovely, comfortable and quiet cottage in a great village close to beaches and great countryside. Lucilla was a friendly and responsive host and I would highly recommend her cottage.

Debra

Lovely cottage in a beautiful village. 2 great pubs and great beaches all within walking distance.

Lynne, Salisbury

A wonderful, long weekend spent at Speedwell cottage and it is everything it claims to be. A beautifully inviting family home set in the picturesque village of Georgeham. The cottage was well equipped; everything we may have needed had been thought of and provided, and it was the perfect base for exploring the local area and beyond. The guest guide Lucilla provided ahead of our stay along with numerous information leaflets in the cottage was brilliant and we took full advantage planning our days out in front of the roaring log fire with a glass of bubbly or two. Highly recommend Speedwell.

Location

The neighbourhood

The house is off a narrow lane in a cluster of cottages in the village of Georgeham, which has two good pubs – The King’s Arms does an outstanding Sunday roast. Woodtown Farm veg boxes deliver here on Saturdays. Find bigger shops in nearby Braunton and Barnstaple, and a train to Exeter. Lots of good beaches nearby, and walks galore on the South West Coast Path or the wilds of Exmoor.

Local points of interest from Lucilla Carr

  • Baggy Point is an exceptional headland in North Devon, separating Croyde Bay from Morte Bay and Woolacombe Beach. It's a favourite with rock climbers and, if the weather's dry, you're sure to see or hear some below.
  • Running from Dartmoor into the Atlantic Sea, the River Taw is a wild and beautiful river. Home to various fish species such as recreational trout and sea trout, the area is popular with anglers.
  • Running alongside the Tarka Trail, the Isley Marsh Nature Reserve is a haven for many different and unusual bird species.
  • The Torrs, sometimes known as The Seven Hills, tower over Ilfracombe. These stunning cliffs offer sweeping coastal views.
  • Bike Shed is a bike shop with attached cafe with lots of seating inside & out and indoor bike storage.

Introducing

Lucilla Carr

The Carrs fell for the charms of Speedwell cottage while on a family holiday – the outdoorsy couple love spending time here, exploring the beaches and moors with their three children and their family dogs. Lucilla has made sure the house is super for families and looks after the bookings, as well as managing a veg box scheme on an organic farm near where they live.
