The Experience

This picture-postcard cottage in a sleepy Devon village is great for families; French windows open from the cosy sitting room straight into the garden. A sun-trap with a big lawn for games, patio barbecue and a cabin hideaway with a big squishy sofa.

The neat kitchen is made for families; ice packs for beach picnics and all the kit you need to cook a Sunday lunch. The ground floor twin and shower room are great for those who’d rather not climb stairs. Upstairs, two doubles and a bunk room look out over the garden and share a bathroom, with roll top bath.

For beach days, you’re spoilt for choice – popular Putsborough is a 40-minute cross country stomp, or a three-minute drive. Walk along the bay to reach Woolacombe for sandcastles and ice creams, or try surfing at cool Croyde. Cycle through wooded valleys on the ‘Tarka Trail’, a former railway line, or explore the endless dunes at Braunton Burrows.

Fabulous cottage in which it was a treat to stay. We all (adults, youngsters and dog), appreciated the various places to relax, from having tea in the cabin, lunch in the garden and evenings in the cosy lounge. Consideration and attention to details meant needs of the guest had been thought through from a well equipped kitchen to having equipment for baby / toddler to hand. We love the area and found the cottage a good base for our various activities including walking and surfing. Two good pubs in walking distance were a bonus.

We had a brilliant stay at Speedwell Cottage! The photos really do not do this lovely cottage justice. It provided a wonderfully warm, cosy and calm base for our rainy adventures. We walked to Croyde most days which was a nice distance with two little ones, generally the location is very good for exploring by foot or car. Very much recommend the Kings Arms for tasty food and a friendly vibe. We look forward to returning to this special cottage :)

This place was so lovely, so much charm - nestled in the heart of a gorge village near an amazing beach for walking, surfing and more! We were two families with kids and was perfect. Great big double bed too :) Will definitely come and stay again!

Had an amazing xmas week in the cottage, lots of lovely touches like xmas tree, crackers, bottle of fizz left by Lucilla. There were 6 adults and felt very comfortable. Very close to the excellent local pub and lots of walks although it was so windy we didn’t spend too long on the beach! Would love to go back in summer and enjoy the gorgeous garden space.

We were a group of adults, children and dogs and all had a really great stay at Speedwell (our second time here). The cottage is lovely and homely, clean, well-equipt and comfortable. Lovely large garden and close to some great pubs and beaches. Great communication from the host. Really love it here and will definitely be booking again!!

Kate, Bath

Me, my partner and our dog loved our stay at the cottage. It was beautiful, spacious and characterful. The wood-burning stove was a big highlight, as well as the outbuilding in the garden - extremely useful as one of us had to do some work while away. Communication was perfect. Hoping to return!

We had the most wonderful week at Speedwell Cottage. The cottage was packed with charm and character, beautifully decorated and was a very welcoming and comfortable place to stay for all of the family. The garden was beautiful with lovely furniture on the patio and plenty of space on the lawn for both toddler and dogs to run about. The village itself is very picturesque and has everything you need from two brilliant pubs within close walking distance, a great village store and a park for children. It’s close proximity to Putsborough and Croyde make it a really special location - just far enoug

A great spot: cottagey and family-comfortable with an excellent kitchen and a south-facing garden. Lovely nearby beaches/dunes and good food...

Speedway Cottage was absolutely wonderful, the perfect family location to have a little break away with your children. The garden was great, plenty of space for the children & the dog to have a run around, the cosy little outbuilding with the sofa etc in was ideal too. The cottage itself was beautiful, the kitchen was great, had everything you needed. The lounge was lovely & cosy & the bedrooms were perfect. The little added touches such as highchairs, plenty of games & books etc, even children's plastic bowls, plates & cutlery were such lovely extra bits & bobs. The location was amazing, not

We love staying in Speedwall cottage and there was no hesitation when we decided to book it again for a 2 week stay in June. It is a beautiful cottage and based in an ideal location to explore North Devon. The cottage is decorated and equipped to a high standard and is spacious but cosy at the same time. The garden is a beautiful space to sit in or to enjoy a bbq and it was enhanced this visit by the addition of a garden room with comfortable sofas and TV. Lucilla is an excellent host and happy to provide any information you need to make the most of your visit. Will definitely visit again in t

Absolutely wonderful place ! Comfortable, home from home...amazing location, quiet but near croyde and woolacombe so plenty to do. Would highly, highly recommend 👌

Chloe, Newport

We stayed at Speedwell for a week (family of four + dog). It was perfect for us, lots of space to relax including a den for the teenagers to watch Netflix! The cottage has everything and the local area is great to explore. Try the local pubs for food (both excellent) and the gorgeous Porthole cafe at the end of a stunning walk (thank you to Lucilla for all the recommendations). We will return!

Location

The neighbourhood

The house is off a narrow lane in a cluster of cottages in the village of Georgeham, which has two good pubs – The King’s Arms does an outstanding Sunday roast. Woodtown Farm veg boxes deliver here on Saturdays. Find bigger shops in nearby Braunton and Barnstaple, and a train to Exeter. Lots of good beaches nearby, and walks galore on the South West Coast Path or the wilds of Exmoor.

Local points of interest from Lucilla Carr

  • Baggy Point is an exceptional headland in North Devon, separating Croyde Bay from Morte Bay and Woolacombe Beach. It's a favourite with rock climbers and, if the weather's dry, you're sure to see or hear some below.
  • Running from Dartmoor into the Atlantic Sea, the River Taw is a wild and beautiful river. Home to various fish species such as recreational trout and sea trout, the area is popular with anglers.
  • Running alongside the Tarka Trail, the Isley Marsh Nature Reserve is a haven for many different and unusual bird species.
  • The Torrs, sometimes known as The Seven Hills, tower over Ilfracombe. These stunning cliffs offer sweeping coastal views.
  • Bike Shed is a bike shop with attached cafe with lots of seating inside & out and indoor bike storage.

Introducing

Lucilla Carr

The Carrs fell for the charms of Speedwell cottage while on a family holiday – the outdoorsy couple love spending time here, exploring the beaches and moors with their three children and their family dogs. Lucilla has made sure the house is super for families and looks after the bookings, as well as managing a veg box scheme on an organic farm near where they live.
