The Experience

Old Red Lion is a treat. This Georgian house is in the middle of the thriving town – on a quiet lane through an archway just off Market Place. The wide, blue front door looks instantly inviting… step in to a friendly place, awash with warm colours, art, market finds and funny little nooks and crannies. There’s plenty of space, and Hilary and Tim have created an easy home you can share with friends and family (their own boys love it here!). Downstairs there’s a big sitting room with wood-burner, books, comfy sofas, colourful rugs. This opens out to a sociable dining area with old pine table and masses of cushions on benches; the kitchen has a two-oven stove, coffee machine and all you need to cook for a hungry hoard. Stone steps lead up to another elegantly furnished sitting room – a lovely spot to chat or read. Pretty bedrooms have well-dressed beds: two on the first floor and two up more stairs at the top of the house – each floor has a shared bathroom. Your garden is at the end of the lane: a sheltered patch with a shed for bikes – snoozes in the sun, snifters before dinner – and you can spot otters and kingfishers on a stunning river walk.

Our expectations were exceeded at our stay at The Old Red Lion ! A delightful characterful property, fully and thoughtfully fitted out and stocked , including a Welcome Pack of Dorset teas, cookies and a bottle of Prosecco ! The hideaway garden is an absolute delight and we spent early evenings there having an aperitif and enjoying the sunshine. The spacious property is ideally located near to the local bakers and butchers/cheese shop. We spotted a kingfisher diving for fish on our walk by the River Stour. The neighbours were characters and really friendly and welcoming. Thoroughly recommended

We loved it at Old Red Lion - it has tonnes of character, very comfortable and was very well equipped for all of our needs. The owner was super friendly and accommodating. It is a great base for exploring Dorset. Brilliant having the benefits of being in the centre of the town but in a quiet spot. We really would have loved to have stayed for another week…next time!

Alan, Birmingham

A wonderful and cosy place to stay with lots of character and a lovely part of the world to stay and explore!! Really helpful owner, who has ensured all your requirements are met, would thoroughly recommend and we hope to return soon.

A long weekend with family to celebrate an 80th birthday in a well equipped and comfortable house with many quirky features. An interesting old town and a good centre for exploring northern Dorset. We would like to have stayed longer - and had a bit less rain!

David, Lewes

Gorgeous house, thoughtfully furnished and immaculately kept. So enticing, in fact, that we could have happily stayed indoors all week despite the beauties of Dorset glittering on our doorstep. Our son too had to be dragged away from the piles of games and books in his bedroom. The location of the house is inspired, being so central and yet unmistakably private. And one of the best libraries I have had the pleasure of not having time to read on holiday.

Amy, London

We had an excellent break in this very comfortable house; like walking into somebody's home. It is right in the heart of Blandford Forum but down a side passage for quiet and privacy and is a great base for touring or walking the Dorset countryside or a bit further afield to the coast. It has a very well equipped kitchen and lots of other facilities such as a TV with streaming and DVD, a sound system, and a wood burning stove which keeps everything cosy.It was a pleasure to deal with the host who provided comprehensive notes about the house facilities.

Just as a stroll amongst nature nurtures the soul, so did a week a the historic Old Red Lion soothe and restore our inner calm and equilibrium. A true gem of a place and one to be drawn back to. The terrific week spent there felt so comforting, we really did not want to go home! You will have great fun exploring the house with all its reminders of times gone by together with the beautiful interior design and sense of deep care which has gone into making this a very special holiday retreat.

We absolutely loved Old Red Lion House. It's so comfortable and well equipped that it's like staying with friends with a lovely house. Location is quirky and lovely- tucked down a yard off the pretty Blandford Forum market square. We loved being so conveniently located (highly recommend the butchers in the square for delicious treats). The house is thoughtfully and tastefully decorated, comfy sofas, lovely woodburner, well equipped kitchen, lots of space for everyone to relax. Beds and bedding were comfortable and showers good and hot! So all boxes ticked! We hope to return!

We had a great stay at your lovely house. What a fantastic place you have! The space & layout of the house was absolutely brilliant for our extended family & you have done everything with such thought & to a high quality. You had everything we needed. Thank you so much for all the little touches like the welcome bottle of Prosecco & tea bags! We really appreciated them. We loved sitting around the cosy kitchen table at meal times & watching a film in the evenings in the wonderful lounge area. Your information folder was very helpful and we referred to it a lot. We really enjoyed our stay.

Rachel, Staines

Comfortable stay in a unique cottage. Excellent location for sightseeing and local amenities. Lovely soft furnishings and super communication from owner. Highly recommend.

Wendy, Cambridge

We had a very enjoyable stay in this lovely home, which is full of books and toys and very well presented. It's wonderfully child friendly, and the owners answered every query (eg with helpful tips about the best, quietest beaches to visit) very quickly. The neighbours were also friendly and we had a sense of a nice community. Thank you for a very pleasant holiday.

We had a great stay at the Old Red Lion over the new year break. The house is beautifully decorated and provides a lovely relaxed base for exploring Dorset. There's plenty of attention to detail, the kitchen is well equipped and everything was in working order. Hilary is an excellent host. We particularly enjoyed trips to the nearby coast for bracing walks, returning to enjoy a cosy evening by the log fire.

Karen, Surrey

We had the most wonderful stay at Old Red Lion. The house itself is beautiful and so well maintained with everything in perfect working order. The log fire is such a treat on cold days. We went with our two children (3 and 1) who absolutely loved the house itself and the many adventures we had with lots of days out - there is so much to do in close proximity. Hilary communicated with us so well from the moment we booked and made sure we were completely comfortable and had everything we needed. We were even greeted with a very thoughtful basket of tea and treats. We plan on returning soon!

Azadeh, Richmond

We arrived all 7 of us, to a beautiful home "Old Red Lion". A wonderful welcome pack , prosecco, heating was on, which made the house feel very cosy. The proximity to the town was less than a minute's walk. The attention to detail, White Company diffusers, fluffy towels and lovely top end range of bed linen was in every bedroom. The 2 bathrooms also a great advantage with 7 ladies !! We had the most wonderful stay celebrating a friends 60th birthday. The sitting room on the first floor was another relaxed chilled space. Hilary was an excellent host & we all hope to come back again one day !

What a wonderful weekend we’ve just enjoyed in The Old Red Lion House. A group of six adults just indulged in Hilary and Tim’s haven like hospitality for a weekend retreat in early January (what a way to kick the holiday blues). This stunningly, listed property in the centre of a sleepy market town allowed each of us to escape our hectic existence, wind down and relax for two days. Every touch is considered from the incredible welcome basket to the logs for the fire and board games. Located a short drive from the the exceptional Jurassic Coast, we would highly recommend. Thanks so much Hilary

Libby, Putney

Old Red Lion is indeed a treat. It’s a wonderfully warm and enveloping space which feels welcoming the minute you cross the threshold. As others have commented, the house easily accommodates eight (in our case consisting of three generations) and the proximity of shops, cafés etc makes catering very easy. Blandford Forum is an excellent centre for exploring all Dorset has to offer but if the weather is inclement, the house is home to some 1,000 books - just browsing the shelves is a delight.

Kate, East Anglia

Eight of us stayed at Hilary's place for a relaxing weekend in October. The location was perfect - seconds away from local shops and pubs... It was also very close to the local countryside and a selection of villages beyond. Hilary herself was the perfect host. The house was perfect and we made great use of the wood burning stove. The kitchen was well stocked and there was enough room for all eight of us to eat together at the dining room table. Hilary has a beautiful house in a wonderful location and we will definitely be looking into coming back.

Sophie, Southend-on-Sea

Lovely house, beautifully decorated throughout. Beds and pillows were comfortable. The wood burner came into its own in the evenings. Despite being near the church the bells did not keep us awake during the night but could disturb light sleepers.

Susannah, Oxford

The Old Red Lion was the perfect place to celebrate our birthdays across three generations. The well proportioned spaces meant there was room for our guests, and having such a great selection of shops on our doorstep and the well equipped kitchen made shopping and catering for large numbers a breeze. Hilary was brilliant and went out of her way to be helpful and accommodating. We had a great week and would highly recommend.

Shayna, London

Lovely stay at The Red Lion. Accommodation had everything that we required. Excellent position with shops bars restaurants and farmers market all within walking distance. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and thank you Hilary for your kind hospitality.
