The Experience

A very English scene with rolling green hills tumbling down to long sandy beaches and The Mount which sits apart from the hustle and bustle of Swanage in quieter Durlston. Here lovely local owners Elaine and Carl know exactly what makes a great get together and have thought of everything – a pool table disguised as a dining table, an ‘arty stuff’ drawer for budding artists and musical instruments for prodigies. Cooks will love the big colourful kitchen and there are long evenings to be spent crashed out on leather chesterfields heaped with velvet cushions, fire lit. Bedrooms at the front are elegant with sea views (one en-suite) but you won’t feel hard done by in the servants’ quarters, smaller but with iron beds and pretty curtains. Upstairs find two more en-suite bedrooms with views through the trees. There are two family bathrooms and a charming garden surrounds all – grab a colourful deckchair from the wall and spend the day on the lawn with a book. For days out there’s Swanage town with some great up-and-coming eateries, a steam train for littlies, or if you just want to get away from it all the coastal path is at hand for walking and wild swimming.

Reviews

The Mount is quaint and beautiful. It has a great atmosphere – with large rooms, lots of space and something for everyone. We all loved the billiard table. The house is in a great location with plenty of parking and we would recommend it to anyone. We would love to go back.

This is a fabulous house and was ideal for the whole family to be away for a few days. We were four generations – from great-grandparents, at 89 years old, down to a three-month baby. The pool table ended up being at the centre of the entertainment, there was a lovely open fire and The Mount was spacious enough for everyone to do their own thing…a key plus!!! Thanks so much for your help and support with our stay Elaine and for your clear directions. We are now thinking about making it an annual jaunt!

Chris, Bognor Regis

We are a group of 7 girlfriends and our visit to The Mount was our 4th long weekend away together. We all absolutely loved the house - it felt like we were being enveloped in a big warm hug when we walked through the front door! Elaine was a delight to deal with through the booking process and checked in by text whilst we were there. The rooms were all very comfortable and the house was extremely well equipped with everything we needed and more. We hired a chef to cook for us on the Saturday night and he was very happy with the kitchen. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Mount.

The Mount is an ideal house for a multi-generational gathering. There is plenty of space in the large rooms for different activities. We were five families including three toddlers. The facilities were excellent. The kitchen is fully equipped with nice crockery and pans etc. For inside entertainment there is an endless choice from musical instruments to ride on ladybirds. The pool table was a big hit. For outdoor activities it is so easy to get onto the coastal path up to Durlston Castle. The hosts Elaine and Carl were very friendly. We had a great time and would go there again.

We have just had at lovely stay at The Mount. Everything we hoped for was provided for and this made for a lovely relaxing few days. You have thought of everything! We were so impressed with all the little touches, the organic hand washes, bathrobes, super kitchen equipment, beautiful gifts, wood for the fire, games, toys, musical instruments and the knitting! Not to mention the very comfy beds. All in all it made our stay super comfy and a home from home - actually a bit nicer than home! It would be lovely to come back again.

Thank you for a wonderful week at The Mount. It was perfect for our extended family – eight adults and four grandchildren, with room to find some quiet too. The kitchen is superbly laid out and equipped, and thinking of the little but important things, like having on arrival sufficient loo paper, soap, washing up liquid, tea bags etc for the whole of our stay, really made us feel welcome (as well as your very kind welcome pack!). It makes such a difference not having to go off immediately to buy 'essentials' when you know you're only going to use half of them. We really enjoyed the garden too, which the children loved and was very safe for them. We would certainly recommend The Mount for any large family group like ours.

Charles, Benenden

The Mount oozes character and space, coupled with the extraordinary additional touches, which all combine to make a place which is unforgettable. The garden too was much appreciated and used, and so good to have it for the two dogs to run around in...... Thank you for all the generous extras you provided, which were very much appreciated. We do hope we will be able to visit again. It would be our third visit. Thank you again for helping us make memorable events to be treasured. Your beautiful house makes me emotional!

Joan, Guildford

A brilliant property, highly recommended. We were a party of nine adults, four children and a baby. The house and garden were perfect for us; lots of space for communal activities and also escapes for quiet moments. It was lovely discovering things in every cupboard and drawer. Elaine and Carl were extremely helpful but not at all obtrusive. Thanks for enabling a really memorable family get-together.

Robert, Petersfield

The perfect house! We were a group of friends with children and this was just the perfect place for a reunion weekend. The house is not only very homely and characterful, but also has anything you need. The kitchen was fully kitted (great for cooking for 14!) and even had all the plastic cutlery you would need for the little ones. We enjoyed relaxing by the fire, playing board games, playing pool and croquet (great set), and the children loved the toys and the ride-on wheelie bugs. Lovely special touches too on our arrival. Many many thanks to Elaine and Carl for a weekend we won't forget!

Agnes, Bristol

We were a large group with 4 small children celebrating a family birthday. From first contact to last, Elaine was extremely helpful. The attention to detail within the house was superb - there is everything you could wish for. Toys and books for children, musical instruments and a fantastically well equipped kitchen and utility. The beds were really comfortable and the bathrobes were a lovely touch. The Mount is well situated for town and shopping as well as long walks around Durlston Country Park. A perfect setting for a family celebration. Thank you Elaine and Carl.

Sally, Blandford

This house sounds amazing and it certainly lives up to expectations! From the moment we stepped through the lovely front door we felt at home . It is grand but welcoming and extremely comfortable and a family group of 10 adults 3 toddlers and 2 dogs were accommodated with ease. The location is excellent being close to the charming seaside town and within a spit and a stride of stunning coastal paths and the country park I think of all the large family holiday homes we have stayed in over several years this one really does come out tops and I would heartily recommend it !

Lorna, Lincoln

The Mount is the most perfect house for a large group - we were 14 adults, 2 children and a dog. There is loads of space, comfy beds, masses of hot water, plenty of plates, mugs etc and 2 dishwashers! It is the little touches that make the difference and make The Mount so special - fluffy towels and bathrobes for everyone, a beautiful garden, toys, books and games for all ages, really well equipped kitchen, washing machine etc. We have already re-booked for 2019!

Amanda, Chessington

Huge house with great facilities (including snooker table) that comfortably fit all 14 of us. Plus the Hosts are lovely - after foolishly leaving a single shoe behind, Elaine kindly sent it back to us free of charge.

Oliver, Bristol

We have just had a lovely family Xmas at this superbly equipped property. There were 16 of us in our party and its size was more than adequate for our needs. The house has some lovely period features and has that real lived in feel. Everything worked well and the hosts Elaine and Carl were extremely friendly and attentive, catering for all our needs. I can thoroughly recommend The Mount which is ideally situated in Swanage which has a rich and fascinating history and is surrounded by some beautiful countryside.

Our large group of eight adults, three children and two dogs enjoyed a wonderful week at The Mount in August. As we were celebrating several events (birthdays and retirement) other members of our extended family joined us in the gorgeous garden for lunches and games afternoons. The house is so spacious and very well equipped providing everything we could have wished for! We enjoyed walks to the beach and nearby Country Park, played croquet, badminton and cricket and had plenty of space to rest and relax when we needed it! Elaine and Carl helped to make our week at The Mount a memorable one!

Sue, Lewes

We were 7 adults, 4 children and 2 dogs and The Mount really couldn't have been better. It's a great house and excellently well equipped. Elaine was very helpful both with our multitude of questions while booking and when we had questions and little issues during our stay. It's worth looking in cupboards and drawers around the house because there's often something surprising or useful inside. We didn't use everything but it was exciting to see what was there. The attention to detail is amazing: even the guitars and ukuleles hanging on the wall were in tune when we arrived!

Simon, Bristol

Booked The Mount for a surprise family birthday weekend and it was perfect. It comfortably housed 11 adults, 7 children, 1 baby and 2 dogs. The kitchen is equipped with all you could possibly need, with ample pots, pans, crockery, cutlery and glasses, and with two dishwashers and two fridges we took full advantage. The house is well furnished but not so pristine that you worry about the children causing damage to precious antiques, so you immediately feel at home. A very pretty garden surrounds the house which the children loved to play in. We will stay again, it is highly recommended.

Ruth, Dorking

We came here as a group of 13 female friends for a long weekend. The house was warm, comfortable and homely, with fluffy towels and robes, gorgeous toiletries and open fires. Spotlessly clean, and with rooms large enough for us all to spread out and never feel cramped. The kitchen is a very well appointed with ample crockery for large groups and two dishwashers also to make life easier. Perched on a hill above Swanage, it is only 5-10 minutes walking down to town. We did long walks along the spectacular coast in both directions over the weekend, without having to use a car. Fabulous!

Local points of interest from Elaine Pearson & Carl Styants

  • The Mount is a stone's throw from the Jurassic Coast & South West Coast Path. Enjoy stunning walks east towards Old Harry Rocks & Studland or west towards Kimmeridge & Durdle Door beyond. Even the short, coastal trot into town is spectacular.
  • Artists including Paul Nash and Graham Sutherland were inspired by Swanage. Enid Blyton visited every year and liked to swim round the pier. Follow the Stone Trail to spot bits of imported London, including a tower from old London Bridge.
  • Purbeck has the most diverse wildlife in Britain. Bats, owls & badgers visit the garden. Orchids, butterflies, puffins & peregrine falcons can be spotted in Durlston. RSPB Arne and Brownsea Island, of Autumnwatch fame, are close by.
  • You can walk to historic Corfe Castle along the chalk ridge, with its epic views over Poole Harbour. Then visit the castle ruins, ancient pubs and artist studios, before catching a steam train back to Swanage.
  • Worth’s famous Square & Compass pub is a rewarding destination for a four-mile coast walk or cycle ride. Enjoy a pint & pasty, gazing out to sea. Another favourite is the Scott Arms at Kingston. Bus there, then ramble over the heath to Corfe station.
  • Swanage is a lively town with events year round. Festivals include: walking, literary, arts, jazz, folk, strings, blues, fish, triathlon & even pirates! Plus Lifeboat Week, Purbeck Marathon and sea rowing.
