The Experience
There are three sitting rooms, a big Aga-warmed kitchen, seven splendid bedrooms, a pantry/scullery and a boot room for muddy kit. Gather loved ones and just come – for blustery walks along the Cleveland Way, hikes in the Durham and Yorkshire Dales, a magnificent drive over to the Lake District, surfing and picnics at the coast and shopping in Richmond or Barnard Castle. If you don’t know this part of the world you’ll fall in love.
Children will adore the dressing-up box and pretend kitchen in their own playroom, grown-ups can choose a book and sit by the fire in the sitting room, or watch telly in the TV room. If the weather isn’t playing you’ll find board games and cards. Across the driveway is a barn with table tennis and pool tables, comfy old sofas and books, even a wood-burner – teenagers will claim this space.
The kitchen is a warm, convivial hub with a well-stocked larder and room for helpers. It’s all simply lovely.

North Farm is definitely not a draughty old farmhouse! Beautifully renovated, so comfy and practical too. Just right for us all. A feast for the eyes….colour, pattern and texture. I loved hearing the owls in the silence of the night.

Location
The neighbourhood
Piercebridge is just over three miles for an organic farm shop selling local meat and dairy, homemade meals, puddings and cakes which can be ordered in advance, and The Fox Hole pub serving good food, or you can walk in an hour to The Spotted Dog at High Coniscliffe. There are wild swimming spots in the river, including a pebble beach and large pool at Gainford, or Winston, a few miles upstream.
Local points of interest from Philip Eade
- 1) Set in 380 acres overlooking Teesdale, North Farm is a wonderful base for exploring the Durham and Yorkshire Dales, with great walks, cosy pubs and numerous places of interest.
- The Lake District is an hour west, the seaside resort of Saltburn 40 minutes east, popular for surfing and blowy walks along the clifftop Cleveland Way.
- We are only 15 mns from Darlington Station and 2 hours 20 min from London.
- Nearby are the pretty market towns of Barnard Castle (with its famous Bowes Museum) and Richmond, the medieval city of Durham, with one of the finest Norman cathedrals in Europe.
- Plenty of lovely places to eat around and in the centre of Darlington. Archers Icecream Parlour is round the corner for homemade Jersey cream ice-cream!
- Visit Raby Castle, Auckland Castle, and the spectacular High Force waterfall.

What a dream of an English country home you have created. Endless decor inspiration. Thank you Rita for teaching us indirectly how to create a beautiful and functional space. Having taken your Create Academy course during the height of the pandemic, to see your North Farm in person truly was a dream come true.
