The Experience

It’s a thoughtful build with no corners cut – solid oak doors, underheated floors with smart Italian tiles, massive insulation plus a log-burner, thick mattresses and crisp cotton sheets, lovely views and plenty of space. The separate, rather smart sitting room looks over the garden, then there’s a snug at the other end of the living space, with L-shaped sofa, TV, board games, cards, magazines and sliding doors to the terrace.

Cooks will approve of the sociable open-plan kitchen with its attractive pendant lighting, large prepping space, and oodles of equipment. You’re left a generous hamper of treats, including wine, and the long table is just the ticket for convivial meals indoors. On sunny days you’ll spill onto the terrace for long lazy meals, with peaceful views over the walled garden, then woodlands filled with birds.

It’s a short amble to The Rose & Crown at Romaldkirk for a pint, or good food, and there are walks from the door.

Come and discover County Durham – a much overlooked and very beautiful county for some wonderful walks, cycles, gardens and interesting villages. Romaldkirk is a pretty village with a delightful green and an ancient church – walks along the river will be sublime, and you're staggering distance from a fabulous pub with excellent food.

Location

The neighbourhood

Romaldkirk is a lovely village with a perfect green, Norman church, two pubs and a few shops. Barnard Castle is six miles for a thriving high street of independent shops and a choice of places to eat, castle ruins and the famous Bowes Museum – built in the style of a French château. Follow the river (Tees) or a disused railway path for High Force waterfalls, visit Raby Castle.

Romaldkirk Village - Three village greens, stone cottages and the ancient church of St Romald, the Cathedral of the Dales, sit two minutes from your door. The Rose & Crown, an 18th-century coaching inn, serves Teesdale lamb and Cotherstone cheese be.
Walking from the door - The Teesdale Way runs alongside the garden. Follow the river down to Cotherstone, or upstream through wildflower hay meadows towards Middleton-in-Teesdale. Boots on at the door, no driving, no car parks just views and pubs.
High Force - Nine miles up the dale, the Tees drops seventy feet over the Whin Sill at High Force, one of England's most spectacular waterfalls, thunderous after rain. Low Force and the swaying Wynch Bridge lie downstream through juniper woods.
Dark skies - You are inside the North Pennines International Dark Sky Park. Step into the garden after dinner and the Milky Way is simply there. Grassholme Observatory, fifteen minutes away, runs guided evenings under some of England's darkest skies.
Barnard Castle & the Bowes Museum - Six miles away a French château rises from a market town: the Bowes Museum, holding El Greco, Canaletto and the Silver Swan, which preens and swallows a fish daily. Barnard Castle adds antique shops, delis and Norma.
Raby Castle - Seven miles east, Raby is a complete medieval castle with red and fallow deer roaming two hundred acres of park. Its 18th-century walled garden, remodelled by Luciano Giubbilei, has become one of England's most admired new gardens.
