The Experience
In the heart of the village by the green and pond, this is a grand spot for walkers in need of sustenance. Settle in the smart bar or the light and airy dining room and enjoy a pint of something local, or one of their guest beers, while you ponder the menu. This is the best ‘gastropub’ for miles – meats are sourced from local farms and the fresh seafood comes straight from the Norfolk coast.
Sleep very happily in country-smart bedrooms (some chalet-style Garden Rooms with private terraces are set away from the road) with thoughtful touches and spoiling bathrooms sporting Bramley soaps and lotions. A breakfast with eggs from Clarence Court, bacon from Woodview Farm and sausages from Priors Hall will set you up for another lovely walk.
On warm days you can enjoy a cocktail from the summer bar on the rear terrace with its flourishing planters and big umbrellas, and on big rugby match days you can join the throng of enthusiastic locals.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're minutes from the A1 and just an hour from London but this has a distinct village feel. You're near to Knebworth House and Gardens, Hatfield House and Woburn Safari Park. Visit the oldest wooden church in the world, Greensted Church at Chipping Ongar, or Hitchin Lavender with 30 acres of wildflower meadows, acres of sunflowers and views of the Wilbury Hills – perfect for a picnic.
Local points of interest from Anglian Country Inns
- Hitchin Lavender, a family run flower farm nearby, offers 30 acres of exploration, acres of sunflowers, wild flower meadows and beautiful Lavender fields in the summer months and is one of Hertfordshire's most scenic spots.
- Greenstead Church - The oldest wooden church in the world and possibly the oldest wooden building in Europe, St Andrew's, near Chipping Ongar, is still used for services every week. The church was featured on a British postage stamp in 1972.
- Hermitage Road Coffee & Bagel Shop in Hitchin.
