The Experience

A delightful, unexpected hideaway bang opposite the site of St Augustine’s Abbey and a five-minute walk to the cathedral. You pass through Ursula and Christopher’s elegant Georgian house to emerge in a pretty courtyard, with fig tree and rambling rose, to find your self-contained cottage.

Downstairs is a cosy sitting room with pale walls, tiled floors and plenty of books, and a clever, compact wet room with mosaic tiles. Then up steep stairs to a swish bedroom with crisp cotton sheets on a handmade bed and views of the ancient wisteria. Breakfast is continental, ordered the night before from a menu and brought to you in a wicker basket: homemade granola, spiced porridge, hot frittata, boiled eggs with soldiers and always warm croissants with homemade jams and marmalade.

On balmy days you can eat it outdoors in the courtyard. There’s a good pub, The Two Sawyers, just a minute’s walk and, a bit further, the Goods Shed, a farmers’ market set in an old railway station with pop-up food stalls.

If you want to be in this amazing city but want a place all to yourselves in a sweet 17th century cottage all to yourselves - this is the place to be. A 'one up - one down' cosy brick cottage with its own wood burning stove, secluded flower filled courtyard. St Augustine's Abbey is across the road and the Cathedral and the busy city life is a 5 minute stroll away. Relax in comfort.

Rap smartly on the highly polished brass lion knocker and Ursula is revealed with surely the warmest smile in Canterbury. Now make your way past the antique rocking horse to the back door. Cross the charming courtyard to your cottage for the night, or longer if you were wise enough and have time to investigate the city fully. You could throw a cricket ball at the cathedral such is your well chosen spot. Your cottage has everything and then some. You may not want to get out of the embracing bed but I urge you to do so and pop over to Ursula’s kitchen for a breakfast to equal to any.

Location

The neighbourhood

The house is set in a row of Georgian houses right opposite St Augustine's Abbey with the cathedral just a five-minute walk. Although traffic does pass on the street, once you're inside there's no indication of any noise. Two train stations, Canterbury East and Canterbury West are within walking distance and there is a good public bus service with stops near the house. The popular Marlowe Theatre is a 10-minute walk.

  • Great location for exploring East Kent and all its historic and coastal attractions. Visit wonderful sandy beaches, imposing castles or just enjoy the fantastic food East Kent has to offer.

  • Just 5 minutes walk from Canterbury's historic cathedral and all the city's historic sites, shops, bars and restaurants.
  • Whitstable and its bustling shops, restaurants and fishing harbour only 20 minutes drive.
  • Leeds Castle, Sissinghurst, the Turner Contemporary Gallery or Chatham's Historic Dockyard all under an hour away.
  • Our breakfasts are sourced from the local Farmers' Market (or direct from the supplier) or grown on our allotment and everything possible is home-made.
