The Experience

Enjoy a locally-sourced steak served at a table set with fresh flowers in one of the oldest pubs in Kent. It’s a 15th-century building on the main road in Wingham and offers a mix of old and new: a blazing fire in the ancient inglenook and stylish stools at the bar.

Four creaky staircases lead to super-smart rooms, the most characterful in the old pub, and two more in the separate Doghouse. One room is on the ground floor with a private entrance; another has an extra bunk-bed room ideal for families. After a very good breakfast (brought to your room if you like), hop in the car to Sandwich. You can walk from the estuary quay to the wild shingle shore: a happy half hour for your dog.

Three talented chefs have put this pub on the map: people travel miles for the modern British food. The whole place buzzes with fresh-faced staff, overseen by young manager Marc.

Reviews

Wonderful welcome amazing food and brilliant service all the food was deliciously prepared and we felt so welcome...my daughter who was turning vegan was carefully catered for too with emails and attention to every detail of her dietry requirements....a delight

Lucy, faversham

Spent a night at The Dog to celebrate my sister’s birthday. Three of us had a wonderful dinner and stayed over. Joined by one more for delicious breakfast next morning. The food sublime, the accommodation great and the staff all friendly and efficient. We have been back for more delicious meals on various occasions. Can’t fault The Dog!

Location

The neighbourhood

The village, between Canterbury and Sandwich, is home to two pubs and many historic buildings. Walks abound and the Wildlife Park is up the road. The walled city of Canterbury (eight miles) is a World Heritage site, while the Salutation Gardens at Sandwich, designed by Lutyens and Jekyll, are a secret surprise. For galleries, beach huts, fish and chips and great oysters, visit Whitstable, 15 miles.

Local points of interest from Marc Bridgen

  • Canterbury Cathedral - UNESCO World Heritage site and all the other delights of the historic City of Canterbury are just up the road. A 20 minute drive or take the bus which stops outside The Dog.
  • Kent - the Garden of England - explore the local countryside, Kent Downs AONB, Stodmarsh National Nature Reserve, Barnsole Vineyard, Gibsons Farm Shop and we are surrounded by wonderful walks - maps available on request & we have a monthly walking club.
  • Kent Riviera - we are a short drive from the coast & the stunning seaside towns of Sandwich, Deal, Walmer, Dover, Ramsgate, Margate & Whitstable to name but a few. Each has its own highlights - castles, historic buildings, piers, museums, galleries...
  • Wildlife Parks - on our doorstep we have Wingham Wildlife Park and the Aspinall Foundation's Howletts zoo.
  • Golf - surrounded by some of the greatest golf courses in the World, most famously Royal St. George's which plays host to the Open again in 2020 plus Canterbury, Princes, Royal Cinque Ports, Walmer and many more.

Introducing

Marc Bridgen

The Brigden family bought The Dog in 2015 and transformed it into what it is today: an award-winning place to eat and stay. Manager Marc is in the driving seat, and stepmother Marilyn is the dynamo behind the interiors. This is the family’s first venture into inns. They run a happy ship.
