The Experience

Tucked behind a short row of houses in a peaceful cul de sac, with common land to one side and woodland to the other, is an 1800s drover’s cottage. Step in to discover fresh flowers and a basket of logs, rose-strewn curtains and a duck egg-blue sofa, a hand-crafted kitchen and a colourful kilim: all you need to keep you cosy on the wintery-est night. Everything has been stripped back to its original style, and great comfort added. The steep winding stair is soft-carpeted and rope-bannister’d, the bedroom’s beams are perfectly limewashed, the fireplace has a wood-burner that belts out the heat. For summer? Two levels of lawn separated by a flower bed, a furnished patio for meals, a bench facing south. The area is famous for its houses – Holkham, Blickling, Felbrigg, Houghton Hall – there’s golf at Sherringham, and the ‘Poppy Line’ – full steam ahead – is down the road; best of all, the delights of the Georgian market town of Holt are a five-minute stroll from your door. Then it’s home to a deep soak in a free-standing tub and sweet dreams; the simple bedroom is a gorgeous treat.

Reviews

Helen, Cobham Surrey

What a wonderful place to stay - thank you. It is so homely, well equipt without too much. It is so lovely being able to walk in to Holt. Beautiful beaches a short drive away - fab.

Colin, Bramhope, Leeds

The cottage did not live up to the expectations. We felt the cottage was uncared for, in need of a deep clean and was a little run down, and displayed a lack of care for your guests. Given the offer is a premium product we expected more. We have communicated a list of issues that we feel need addressing and the owner has said she has taken action. We feel let down by both the owner and Sawdays. It appears Sawdays do not check properties once they are listed - sad!

Sawday's response

We’ve spoken with Amanda at Hill Cottage about your complaint, and also the separate complaint from your partner. She’s confident her cleaners do a very thorough job, but she’ll make sure they know about your comments. Care for her guests is her top priority and we gather she has been in contact with you via email also. We’re sorry you also feel let down by Sawday’s. We do rely heavily on feedback from guests in between our own visits. Hill Cottage was re-inspected in February of this year.

Shirley, Leeds

All looked perfect. Sadly the place was quite grubby, it really required a good deep clean. Garden could have been idyllic but had to ask for a garden table as promised. Plus all very overgrown. Welcome pack was insulting ! Bed linen stained. No basic kitchen ingredients. Very shoddy and a top end price!

Sawday's response

We’ve spoken with Amanda at Hill Cottage who is saddened you didn’t enjoy your stay. Yours was a last-minute booking and the cleaners omitted to leave tea bags and dishwasher tablets, although they did a very thorough clean, as always. The garden table was there, but not left out and for this she apologises, and also for the fact that the lawn needed mowing. On questioning the laundry she couldn’t shed any further light on a stain on the duvet cover, but she always takes complaints very seriously and will ask the cleaners to check the laundry in future before guests arrive.

Steve, Coggeshall

We started staying at Hill Cottage around 6 years ago now, having found it on Sawdays when looking for a bolthole in Norfolk for ourselves and the dog. Since then we've been back at least twice a year, every year. Perfectly positioned just a stroll from the town shops with a walled garden for the dog to run around, it has been and continues to be perfect for what we're looking for in a North Norfolk holiday. You've got plenty of National trust properties just a short drive away, and the beaches are even closer. Love Holt. Love Hill Cottage.

Emma, Aberystwyth

We had a lovely, relaxing second stay this April. Hill Cottage is truly a home from home for us, comfortable, beautiful, with a gorgeous private garden which our Scottie made the most of. Ideally located for exploring all of the idyllic north coast of Norfolk and also fab for wandering around Holt on a lazy day - lots to see and eat. Thank you for having us back, can't wait until next time!
