The Experience
The house was once owned by the de Montfort family, with water gardens providing a most romantic setting. The Browns have added solar panels too. Traditional, comfortable bedrooms in your own part of the house have views, slippers and sofas. From the grand wood-panelled hall enter a beamed dining room with high-backed chairs, brass rubbings, wood-burner and pretty 12th-century arch.
Breakfast will set you up for a day walking or exploring: homemade muesli, bacon from pigs just up the road, homegrown tomatoes, field mushrooms and eggs, vegan and vegetarian options. Wander the gardens and admire the house, which is a historic building – lovers of history will be absorbed.
Oxford Park & Ride is nearby, there’s walking from the door and delightful Christine has wangled you a free glass of wine in the local pub if you walk to get there.

Everything Sawday's guide said was spot on. The welcome was very friendly, my (single ) room was v spacious in an 18th c room with a v good en suite bathroom. V good breakfast and Christine couldn't have been more helpful and charming. And the sound of her daughter playing the piano drifting through the oak-panelled walls....

Location
The neighbourhood
This is gentle countryside and you can walk to pubs in 10 minutes - The Shepherd's Hut or The Crown. It's just one mile to the bus stop for Oxford and buses run every 30 minutes. Wallingford is an interesting town, steeped in history with a good tea room and plenty of shops. You're near to plenty of NT houses and gardens, or join the Thames Path for a mix of country and town walking.
Local points of interest from Christine Brown
- Perfectly situated to visit a variety of national trust houses many within 10 to 30 minute drive
- A 5 minute walk to the historic village of Ewelme dating back to the 14th century. The medieval school is still in full use.. Scenes from Les Miserables were filmed in the beautiful church.
- Positioned right in the centre of Midsomer murder country. Follow the trail of your favourite episode and stop off for lunch at 'The Six Bells' where many a murderer has had a pint.
- A 15 minute drive to the Oxford Park and Ride or even better take the local bus from the village directly to the city centre. Explore the beautiful buildings and dine in one of the amazing bargain restaurants. A vibrant and exciting city .
- Wonderful walking from the door. Turn left at the gate for the Chiltern hills and right for the river.
- Spoilt for pubs and restaurants. Two excellent pubs to walk to and a selection of 'special' restaurants within a short drive.
