Escape from London to find the stylish Swan waiting with the warm welcome of a country retreat. Sitting sweetly opposite the village church, it’s a long low building dating back to the 16th century, while inside all is comfort and calm. A log burner greets you in the generous porch where umbrellas and coats can be left before you head for the glittering, well-stocked bar. Turn right under the attractive beams to a snug informal dining area with big vases of fresh flowers, and chairs upholstered in velvet and brocade. Turn left for a private dining room, as elegant as a Georgian parlour, perfect for a family get-together. At the back is a big courtyard, cleverly planted, with a fire pit and neat little shed-turned-bar. Tuck into the simple, delicious menu – lobster caesar salad, veggie and non-veggie burgers, the freshest fish – our chicken kiev with mash and parsley sauce was full of flavour and texture. Upstairs, six bedrooms, each individually designed and decorated, all with sparkling showers, one with a bath under beams in the bedroom. Outside, a suite with a sitting room and separate rooms for two couples and two little ones. Rest, restore, and explore the Cotswolds.
