The Experience

Wind round a final bend to confront a wild valley, so wide and grassy it could be a backdrop to ‘Watership Down’. Here lie 35 acres dotted with horses and mown by sheep: yours to explore. The owners’ house, at the end of the long, high-hedgerow’d lane, was the Keeper’s Cottage for Montacute House, six miles down the bridle path and Elizabethan (yes, you can walk there). Your cottage, a beautifully converted single-storey old dairy, is attached. Open the stable door to a find a little nest glowing in the sunlight, all whites, creams and soft grey-blues. The clever woodwork is Andy’s – his workshop is on site – while Sarah runs a stud farm and breeds German ponies. A hamstone wall and an arched doorway separate the dreamy living and sleeping areas: fat white sofa, coir carpeted floor, woody kitchenette. Eat in Tintinhull, stock up in Yeovil, visit the farm shop a mile down the lane (it has a bistro too). Return to exposed beams above the big goosedown-dressed bed, and a little courtyard that catches the sun.

Reviews

We are never disappointed when we stay in Sock cottage. From the warm welcome, to the comfort of the cottage. Lots of places to visit in the area, and great scenery and walks.

Jenny, Swindon

Lovely accommodation--everything you need to enjoy your holiday is provided by very caring, thoughtful owners. If you are looking for a place that allows you to relax and unwind -you have found it in Sock Cottage. The owners have three lovely, friendly dogs -each with their own character. A short drive will take you to three National Trust places-all worth a visit. But, if you just want to stay around the farm and take a walk you'll be rewarded with some stunning far reaching views.

Jill, Clevedon

Sock cottage is the perfect get away. The interior is completely lovely and very comfortable, especially the super big bed. The shower was really roomy. It had a well stocked kitchen. It was very clean and well maintained, and set in beautiful surroundings. We could not have asked for more. The hosts Sarah and Andy are very charming and made us feel very welcome.

Ingrid, Leatherhead Surrey

What a totally fabulous , beautiful and tranquil place. The cottage is just stunning. It has everything you need, an enormous and comfy bed, epic walk in shower, well-equipped kitchen, a lovely sitting area and just totally and lovely place to be. Beautifully decorated. Huge thanks to Sarah and Andy for hosting us - we were made to feel so welcome!

Kate, Tavistock

Exceptional ! All the things you wished every place you stayed had. Special mention to the bed, the enormous bath towels and high grade goodies in the fridge ...will definitely come back.

Flora, London

My second visit to this lovely holiday home nestled in the heart of the Somerset countryside. Stylish and well laid out accommodation with beautiful wet room shower and super comfy bed. The owners go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. Ideally situated for visiting Montacute, Tintinhull and many other gardens and sites of interest.

Janet, Durham

Sock Cottage was everything we look for and more. The first thing we noticed on arrival was the beautiful wisteria and fantastic setting and the feeling inside the cottage was one of spaciousness, cleanliness and attention to detail, with beams and crafted wood and forged fittings..and flowers..and sumptuous choice of breakfast goodies which Sarah had left for our week’s stay, even catering for my off piste vegetarian preferences! Sarah and Andy were great hosts..friendly, helpful, welcoming yet totally respectful of our space. And ponies and dogs were the icing on the cake. We’ll be back!

Jacki and Guy, Stratford upon Avon

We had a lovely 5-night stay in this beautiful, comfortable and well-equipped cottage. Sarah's generous supply of tomatoes, mushrooms, eggs, bacon, bread, jam, butter and cereals made for easy and delicious sustaining breakfasts that lasted our entire stay. The perfect place to unwind and relax, with plenty to see and do in the local area. We didn't get round to all the recommended restaurants/pubs, but did especially enjoy the Devonshire Arms and 3, The Green in Sherbourne. A delightful place, with thoughtful, welcoming hosts. We'd love to return.

Sheila, London

We loved our stay, a perfect spot to bask in the glory of the countryside. Great hosts, wonderfully equipped cottage complete with lovely fresh farm produce on arrival - enough to keep you going throughout your stay! Lots to see and do in the area, Tintinhull Gardens and The Lord Poulett Arms being amongst the absolute favourites from the information provided by Sarah. Hard to top though seeing a badger in the lane approaching the cottage and the joy of hearing the young birds in their nest outside the cottage door...... a lovely peaceful, relaxing place to unwind.

Elizabeth, Manchester

We had a lovely couple of days at Sock Cottage and would highly recommend for anyone wanting to get away from it all - Sarah & Andy are the perfect hosts and could not do enough to make sure we were happy and had everything we needed including the lovely fresh produce waiting for us! The cottage is gorgeous and great area for long walks.

Karen, Sussex

Sarah and Andy made us very welcome in their beautifully appointed cottage. We enjoyed the peaceful rural surroundings in an area with plenty of interesting places to visit, there are 2 National Trust properties within walking distance. We were generously supplied with breakfast food throughout our visit, much of it locally produced. We should love to return.

Penny, Berkshire

Out stay was perfect, will definitely return, Thank you Sarah, everything we could possibly want, and lovely surroundings. Enjoyed having your dog for company on our walk.

Linda, Dartmouth

What a wonderful escape. The cottage has been beautifully done and being able to walk straight from the property is a real bonus. Sarah is incredibly responsive, very kind with the food supplies and helpful with the suggestions she gave us for walks and meals out. She even gave me a birthday card and brownie treats which was so lovely. We would certainly come back and recommend it to others.

Sarah, London

Our stay at Sock Cottage was just what we needed - we really felt like we needed a change of scenery and that's exactly what we got :) The cottage itself is absolutely beautiful, the owners Sarah and Andy have thought of everything and the local produce supplied for breakfast was such a treat! The cottage setting/location was so peaceful and relaxing and we were lucky enough to have some fantastic weather which meant that we could literally walk out the front door and head out over the fields - walking for miles each day! Highly recommend a visit to Sock Cottage :)

Beverley, Gloucestershire

You will enjoy a truly lovely break away at Sock Cottage. The owners, Sarah and Andy were delightful company and had stocked the fridge with bacon, farm eggs, milk, bread and more. The elegantly furnished cottage is set in beautiful countryside with plenty of footpath walks. Although lots of places were closed due to Covid, we enjoyed the gardens and village of Montacute and Sherborne has some excellent independent shops. Horses, fields and Somerset fare, we will return!

Wendy, London

We had a lovely stay, despite the strange Covid times! The Cottage is lovely, really comfy and well equipped. The Owners are charming and Sarah left us a fabulous "welcome pack", and had pre booked some excellent restaurants for us - so we waddled out at the end of our stay! The location is excellent with plenty to see within easy reach, and walks directly from the Cottage.

Sue, Sidlesham, West Sussex

A beautiful, immaculately fitted out cottage in a most beautiful location. Delicious fresh produce in the cottage when we arrived meant no rush to shop for food. The huge bed in the huge bedroom was so comfortable that we needed some discipline to get up in the morning! Sarah and Andy made us feel truly welcome and were always at hand if needed. All around green fields, hills and trees - that is the view from Sock Cottage. What is not to love? We will be back.

Valerie, St Albans

Sock Cottage was a great find. It is beautifully fitted out. Sarah the host is kind and welcoming but not intrusive. The food and provisions for breakfast lasted us 3 nights and so we didn't need to go shopping. The cottage is tucked away in a beautiful bit of countryside, very quiet and lots of birds. The huge bed was very comfortable and the shower is amazing. The lighting in the bedroom could be a little stronger and a log fire would have just finished it off nicely.

Richard, Worcester

My wife and I found ourselves looking for that exceptional place where our last 5 months of complete lockdown was not thrown away. It has been so very difficult for us rather elderly to manage over this difficult time but we needed that break, as most people do. What we found was the most beautiful home you could ever wish for!! A cottage so comfortable and welcoming, fabulous space and stunning scenery. ADD to that the absolute charming and brilliant hosts, Andy and Sarah and you have a package that is unbeatable. Not forgetting the two adorable dogs, who we fell in love with. WE WILL BE BACK

Peter, Southwell

We loved being at Sock Cottage. It's at the end of a long track so there is no passing traffic - our ideal, as Londoners, searching for quiet but civilised remoteness. Surrounded by lush, hill fields the whole atmosphere is tranquil. The interior of cottage itself is thoughtfully and stylishly furnished; all the wood work including Gothic-style magnificent double doors into the bedroom has been made by Sarah's talented husband Andy. Supplies of both local foods and toiletries are extremely generous. Sarah and Andy are warm, lovely people who go out of their way to be helpful. We'd go again!

Local points of interest from Sarah Steggall

  • Wake up to magnificent birdsong. Woodpeckers, squirrels and badgers in the wood, wrens and swallows nesting in the small barn opposite the cottage and buzzards displaying their flying skills over our hills. We even have wild deer in our hedgerows.
  • There is no need to shop on your way here. You will find the little kitchen stocked with all the immediate essentials to welcome you plus local farm produce of your choice to create a delicious breakfast the following morning.
  • Although Sock Farm nestles in its own valley at the end of a long 'No Through Road' we are within a few minutes of main routes from London to the West Country. Its unique position offers peace and tranquility with easy access to explore and enjoy the area
  • Enjoy some of the excellent pubs and restaurants in the area. Our eldest son is a rather splendid Head Chef and has put together a 'well tested' list of suggestions for you to try.
  • For keen walkers we have direct access from our land onto Monarch's Way. This runs for 615 miles and was the escape route taken by King Charles ll after being defeated in the Battle of Worcester! A stroll to Montacute House is only 40 minutes though.
  • A growing number of our guests now have electric cars. We have a charging point in the stable yard close to the cottage for convenience.
