The Experience

You’ll get a very friendly vibe from Sasha, who comes out to greet you in the pretty garden. You can have afternoon tea and homemade cake here or inside by the open fire in the sitting room surrounded by beautiful fabrics and wallpaper designed by Sasha’s mum, Anna French. The timber-framed house dates back to the 1500s and was originally the village pub.

It’s worth coming for Sasha’s breakfasts alone – she’s a committed foodie. You may start with her homemade pear compote with organic ginger yogurt and a sprinkle of pecan and treacle granola, or a fruit salad of mango, melon, blueberries and pomegranate; there’s toasted sourdough or croissants from Pump Street Bakery and homemade marmalade from a Dundee recipe. If you still have room there’s local coffee-cured salmon or kippers, scrambled eggs and award-winning sausages, bacon and black pudding from the butcher in Aldeburgh. Sasha has also been discovering good walks in the area for the last twenty years and you can join the Sailor’s Path from Snape Bridge, a ten-minute drive.

Walk over the road to a good pub in the village or visit the church with its carved and painted ceiling. You’re 20 minutes from Orford, ten from Snape Maltings and 30 from Southwold, known as Chelsea-on-Sea.

Reviews

The most welcoming wonderful host, so generous with her time and ideas to enhance our stay; all delivered with great charm and elegance alongside delicious cooking and delightful rooms. Thank you.

Miriam, Derbyshire

A very comfortable stay in the heart of the Suffolk countryside. Sasha was most hospitable, and she served very delicious breakfast each morning.

Antoinette, Amersham

Sasha is a considerate and generous host who made us most welcome in her beautiful old house in the Suffolk countryside. Offering us afternoon tea on arrival, we were treated to home-made cake made with Sasha’s own marmalade. Breakfasts were cooked using locally sourced ingredients of the highest quality, and were delicious. They set us up for the day. Sasha shared her knowledge of the locality and Suffolk more widely to guide us to places of interest and great food for dinner. We slept in the Garden Room where our bed was very comfortable and we had a Sitting Room and bathroom for o

Jo, Halifax

We had a wonderful stay in Sasha’s beautiful cottage. The bed was comfortable; the sheets lovely, white and crisp; the breakfast delicious. And it was a pleasure to meet Sasha. Thank you

Kate & Nick, Staffs

Stunning breakfasts, great accommodation, ideal location and amazing hospitality. Just some of the things that made our stay a so good, it has topped the list of accommodation of the 6 short breaks away this year.

Ian, Croydon

Friends of ours told us all about the Crown House B&B. They said it was lovely. They said the breakfast was unequalled and the hostess Sasha not only a sweet person but extremely helpful and competent and caring. They said the rooms were comfy and cosy and the beds luxurious and in the evenings Sasha would light a fire and you could sit there and talk about all the things you experienced during the day, of course, she was giving hints and tips and directions. They said you will not regret it. We didn't, we enjoyed every single moment. So what can I add?Our friends were right!

Jörg, Bielefeld, Germany

Lovely room in a lovely house hosted by a very friendly, accommodating host who gave us plenty of information/tips about the area and local restaurants/ pubs. Excellent breakfast. A really enjoyable stay.

Tom, Harrow

This part of rural Suffolk is to be treasured. It is in the deepest, greenest part of the countryside, yet on the edge of the romantic Sandlings forests and heathland and just a few minutes' drive from the most glorious stretch of the Suffolk coast. Life is deliberately leisured and to be enjoyed.

Peter, Sawday's Inspector

Rarely has Mr Sawday recommended such a remarkable establishment as the Crown House with its quirky architecture and eccentric hostess, who is liable to burst into song with barely a moments notice and a dog named Cornelius. Once ensconced beneath the ancient beams the hurly-burly of the 21st-century is but a distant memory. The relaxed pace of life is never more evident than at breakfast time when, having put the world to rights one is fortunate to hit the open road before noon. You will leave having experienced the best of English hospitality

Jill and Richard

Sasha is delightful, the room was delightful, the house and garden are delightful, as are the dogs, the area. . . All in all delightful. Thank you Sasha!

Valerie, London

As always it's been a fantastic stay (it's our 4th time!) We loved The Garden Room and felt very safe and comfy here. Breakfast was also, as always, fantastic. Thanks so much for a lovely week!

Charlie & Nick, Princes Risborough

Beautiful old country home, and a wonderful country house welcome. Lovely host Sasha (and her chummy dogs) greeted us with warmth and enthusiasm, with our comfort and enjoyment her prime concern. She quickly got to know what we liked to eat and to do, and was unstinting in her efforts to please. The breakfasts are magnificent and if we had stayed for dinner, I'm sure that would have been just as delicious. Regarding the current Covid concerns, Sasha was spot-on with the arrangements necessary and frequently checked that we were happy with these.

Pauline & Mike, Wigan

A sumptuous bed followed by a scrumptious breakfast, everything that you ever wanted from a splendid Sawday's B&B. Sasha is a natural host, her mission is clear - to make your stay as comfortable as possible and she succeeds. I enthusiastically recommend Crown House (and the surrounding countryside isn't bad either!).

Corina, Lewes

A unique and very comfortable, beautifully appointed bed and breakfast. Nothing was too much trouble for Sasha and her breakfast was superb. Ideally situated if you are visiting The Maltings for a concert (as we were). We are planning to return for a longer stay in order to explore the lovely area.

Victoria, Amersham

The house is undeniably Suffolk-perfect and has been beautifully done up to the highest standards of faultlessness. Among all that glittered, our breakfast sparkled with brilliance. Sasha is a character, passionate about music and getting B&B dead right.

Alastair, Sawday's inspector

Location

The neighbourhood

It's quiet here, with not much to do in the village except go to the pub. But the walking is superb and Sasha has done much research about the area, so do ask. She can tell you about circular walks with a good pub to stop off at for lunch, or a tea room for cake, long tiring hikes or gentle strolls. You can join the Suffolk Coastal Path for breath-taking walks and views across the North Sea – don't be put off by the name, the water is quite warm in summer. You're 10 minutes in the car from Framlingham for good restaurants, a medieval castle and market square - also famous for antiques.

Local points of interest from Sasha French

  • Just 1.5 miles off the A12 makes Crown House an easy base from which to explore all that the Suffolk Coast has to offer. Aldeburgh 15 mins, Southwold 30 mins, Orford 20 mins, Snape maltings 10 mins, Framlingham & Saxmundham 7 mins
  • The timber framed house, originally thatched, dates back to the late 1500s when it was the pub before being converted into 3 labourers cottages in the 17thC.
  • Framlingham is a very attractive medieval market town with a castle where Mary Tudor was pronounced queen. It also boasts The Station Hotel, which is in my opinion, the best place to eat
  • Very quiet, rural location, in picturesque village surrounded by fields. You can walk 1.5 miles across the fields to CAMRA award winning best pub in East Anglia The Sweffling White Horse - pub with no bar! Open Friday - Monday
  • BBC2 film location for "Detectorists"
  • Places to visit - Parham Airfield Museum, Sutton Hoo, Orford Ness and The Long shop Museum in Leiston is a must

Introducing

Sasha French

Sasha trained in and produced opera. She lived in London for years, retreating to Suffolk for weekends. She began to absolutely hate going back to London on Sunday nights, so she bought Crown House and settled here permanently some years ago. Her plan was always to run a special place and her inspiration was staying with other Sawday's owners. She adores meeting people, cooking breakfasts (especially poached eggs...) and helping people fall in love with her beautiful part of the country.
