The Experience
Working farm with sheep, geese and chickens deep in the Sussex countryside. Zsa and Stephen’s friendly family house is full of books and comfortable places to perch. Close to Gatwick too, so an easy stopover.
Your large bedroom gets the morning sun and has a Juliette balcony – little ones can have a grandchild’s room if needed. Breakfast includes home-laid eggs, locally grown tomatoes and mushrooms, fruit from the orchard, yogurt and croissants. Eat at the table in the big kitchen or out on the patio when it’s balmy.
Explore Zsa’s brimming garden, which she opens for the NGS; find wild areas, mown paths, veg patch and aviary – tennis courts and trampoline too. Walk across fields to eat at the local pub, or head to Southwater (five miles) for more choice, including a good Indian.

Zsa and Stevie were kindly and attentive hosts. The bedroom was very well appointed and most comfortable. The house was delightfully quiet. Tea and cake v good quality!) on arrival and god quality cooked breakfast the next morning. All well recommended.

Lovely stay. Super comfortable house, huge master bedroom overlooking three aspects of the garden, it's rain shower - just bliss; delightful and well tendered colourful garden, three ever so well behaved Hungarian Vizslas. All this and not a sound - save for the geese and chickens. Thank you Stevie for hosting.

We stayed so that we could attend a wedding and take a walk in neighbouring Knepp Park, which we did and nearly got lost. Our relaxed and informal hosts provided us with a very comfortable and sunny room, grandchildren on holiday, three gentle dogs, lambs, chickens and a lovely garden. Overall, a delightful overnight stay.

Location
The neighbourhood
The peaceful farmhouse has views to the South Downs National Park - great walks in all directions. The garden opens for NGS; there are many National Trust and other gardens in the area to visit, including Parham House just 20 minutes away. Shipley is the nearest village (nearly 3 miles); it has one of the oldest Norman churches in Sussex, built in the 12th century by the Knights Templar. Knepp Castle (3 miles) is the site of a re-wilding project - ponies, cattle, deer and pigs roam wild in 3,500 acres and you can go on a 'safari' or guided walk around the land. Goodwood (heaps of sporting events) and Chichester (cathedral, festivals, gardens, beaches) are both a 40-minute drive.
Local points of interest from Zsa Roggendorff
- Easy access to Brighton for theatres and concerts, Arundel Castle with it's glorious gardens, and Goodwood horse racing
- Our back drive gates open straight onto Knepp Castle Estate, and their wilding project with free roaming animals, and natural landscape, for interesting walking, birding and safaris in summer. Fantastic walks on the South Downs and also on nearby beaches a
- Explore the antique shops and galleries of Arundel and the glorious ancient centre of Chichester, or the old market town of Horsham
- Visit the great houses of Sussex, Parham my favourite with it's long gallery and walled gardens just beneath the South Downs
- Visit Goodwood for it's famous classic car events, Festival of Speed and hill climb events.
- Drive the German Nations favourite English road, our A272 which takes you through the prettiest areas of the Sussex Weald

Introducing
Zsa Roggendorff
Zsa studied history of art at university and is well-travelled. She volunteers in the country, looks after the horses, chickens and sheep on the farm and opens her garden for the NGS. Stevie runs his own business, and his gardener grows lots of fruit and veg for the garden.
I was booked in for 2 days and stayed for 4! Zsa and Stevie were so welcoming, hospitable and made me feel at home. Kitchen suppers, lovely breakfasts and all the creature comforts meant I had to tear myself away at the end.
