The Experience
Inside you’ll feel private and cosy, views are over the orchard and garden. Walk straight in to a roomy porch with oak boarding and the kitchen with its original brick floor, an old pine dresser with pretty china, pale blue cupboards and plenty of stuff for even the most demanding cook. You’ll find fresh eggs, croissants, bread and homemade jam as well as flowers.
The bathroom is off here, with painstakingly restored terracotta floor tiles, a proper big white bath and a window. The open-plan sitting room has a comfy sofa, lots of interesting books, an electric wood-burner and an antique chair. Sleep like a log in the comfiest big bed with feather and down; your bedroom has one exposed flint wall and thick fabrics.
Wander the garden to find a quiet spot, set off on superb walks in any direction or stroll half an hour down a bridle path to the Jolly Sportsman in East Chiltington for excellent local food and wine.

We had a lovely stay with Jinks & Steve, the dairy is welcoming & homely very comfortable with all you need. Perfectly located for the South Downs & lots of good walks without cars, also only 20 min from the sea. You also have Suzys homemade jams & cakes at the gate. Jinks also gives you all the information you need for pubs, provisions & places to visit. We would highly recommend the dairy & would return.

Local points of interest from Jinks McGrath
- Beautiful, unspoilt rural location, surrounded by fields, footpaths and birdsong, within the South Downs National Park. Wonderful walking countryside and rolling hills - local high spots include Wolstonbury Hill, Devil's Dyke and Firle Beacon.
- The Dairy is part of the curtilage of Streat Place Barn, built around 1600, and traditionally restored by us over the last 30 years.
- The historic town of Lewes is just 7 miles away - enjoy a high street full of local shops, artisan makers and lovely cafés. The bustling city of Brighton, with it's beach too, is just 10 miles away.
- There are some wonderful places to eat out just a stones throw from The Dairy, perfectly walkable to, they include 'The Jolly Sportsman' in East Chiltington, 'The Bull' in Ditchling and 'The Half Moon' in Plumpton.
- We have culture in abundance - from the decadent escapism of 'Glyndebourne Opera', the beautiful 'Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft', the inspiring 'Charleston Farmhouse' and 'Farley's Farmhouse'.
- Get a taste of the local foodie scene by hunting out 'The Sussex Peasant' in Ditchling, 'Dill' in Lewes, 'Artelium' Wine in Streat, 'Plaw Hatch Farm' in Forest Row, 'Fire+Wild' in Firle.

Introducing
Jinks McGrath
Jinks, a jeweller and teacher of jewellery making, has travelled the world training women in countries such as Afghanistan, Myanmar and Nepal. She is passionate about this work and the impact it has on women's lives. Her husband Steve went to art school then became a carpenter and timber framer – he restored all the buildings himself. Jinks has her studio here so is mostly around to welcome you and settle you in.
The Dairy is a delight and the Shepherd's Hut was perfectly imperfect in every way. I slept in the Hut for a few nights and felt I was back in my grandparents' beach shack with a wonderful wood smell. I left the tiny shutters open at night, watching the moon rise whilst an owl hooted in a nearby hollow. Heavenly. The Dairy had vintage linen tablecloths, and an old world charm yet with everything that you need. Tucked in the lanes just behind the South Downs this is a perfect base for country walks, great pubs and stunning views from the top of the Downs. Everything is within walking distance.
