The Experience
The original front bar has wooden floors, a mix of old dining tables with candles and cushioned oak benches – the feel is warm, the wood-burner churns out the heat and there’s a comforting mix of locals. If you want more privacy head to the lovely little snug. The menu is a cut above most pub menus – warm autumn salads, fried St Ewe egg with pecorino, hearty steaks from Stokes Marsh Farm. You’ll find all the old favourites too, along with an appealing wine list and some fine Butcombe ales.
Bedrooms are shared between the main building and the Courtyard, they vary in size (two can interconnect for a family room, two have a private terrace) but all have fresh milk and cookies, coffee machines and a chef’s treat to take away. Sparkling en suite bathrooms have Bramley goodies.
Dine in the extension with big glass windows framing the view of the South Downs – the kitchen is open for a bit of buzz and theatre. Sunday lunch is superb.
