The White Horse

Chilgrove, Sussex

Spacious garden rooms, swish bathrooms and glorious Goodwood a trot away. Perfect for foodies who love their wine, and unwinding

15 rooms

Rooms sleep 2

Beautiful Sussex downland provides a backcloth to this very English inn close to Chichester. Long, low and whitewashed, it dates from 1768 and was once a staging post; now it’s the perfect place for foodies and wine buffs to be fed and watered in style. The relaxing timbered bar and dining room combines contemporary-smart with traditional charm: blazing wood-burners, heritage hues, fat candles on scrubbed tables, rugs on upholstered benches. There are serious wines (flick through the ‘Red Book’) and a delicious monthly menu – fishfinger sandwiches, oxtail linguini, venison and mustard ragù, whole lemon sole, rhubarb and almond crumble. A secluded courtyard and spacious garden rooms blend rustic-chic with modern design, featuring steamer trunks, architectural four-poster beds, striking wall coverings, posh linen, sheepskin rugs and iconic retro furnishings. Bathrooms are swish; two have hot tubs on private patios. Glorious Goodwood draws the racing set, while stunning downland rambles radiate from the front door.

My wife and I had a very short but enjoyable stay at this individual inn in the South Downs. When we arrived there was a good Jazz band playing which was great to unwind to with a good choice of drinks, particularly as we had spent the day hiking. The room was good and the dinner was excellent in the evening. To be honest we have made a habit this year of weekend breaks using Sawdays Inn and this one did not disappoint. Thanks.

The room was fine, although there was no shower or milk for drinks. The food was extremely standard and neither the evening meal nor the breakfast was very tasty. All the food was cold. They seemed very understaffed. Despite having booked in for dinner it took an extra hour for us to be given a table and at breakfast we got forgotten for half an hour before our order was taken.
