The Experience

This hidden gem is tucked down a side street just outside the city walls. Originally a 1930s coal merchant’s store, now light floods in through glass ceilings and the huge windows of the open-plan hall/living space and walls are adorned with an eclectic collection of modern art – which is constantly changed and also for sale.

Colourful, hugely comfortable bedrooms are two up, two down. Charmian and Mike live next door and they bring over warm croissants to accompany a generous continental breakfast. A bottle of bubbly can be provided for special occasions. Each of the four rooms has a coffee machine and a kettle. Doors open out to a tiny central courtyard that’s been cleverly fitted in, and you can take your breakfast out here on sunny mornings.

Walk to everything: the station, a massive choice of restaurants and bars, interesting shops, evensong – your hosts have all the best tips.

Reviews

Michael and Charmaine have turned coal dust to diamonds! Maybe because she's a jeweller? It's certainly a gem of a place, with light and colour sparkling throughout. Who would ever think sleeping in a coal shed could be so luxurious. I loved it!

What a wonderful place to stay! The location is perfect - just a short walk to York Minster. Mike & Charmian were both incredibly welcoming. They gave great local recommendations and their generous hospitality truly made the experience special!

What a gem of a B&B! Situated within a few minutes' walk of the Cathedral, the Coal Shed was the perfect place for a city break. We received a warm welcome and the car was soon accommodated in the locked yard. Many thoughtful touches and personal recommendations - have since read a little of the Coal Shed's history and renovation. Highly recommended!

Location

The neighbourhood

The Coal Shed is in a quiet residential side street, very close to the cathedral. You won't need to drive at all, but there's off-street parking if you do come by car. It's a short stroll to the centre of York: wander the city walls, walk down the Shambles, dip into all the culture, visit gardens and museums.

Local points of interest from Charmian Ottaway

  • York Minster and the City walls are a short stroll away and we are happy to advise on City guides and walking tours
  • We have parking for two cars in a secure yard with locked gates and can provide further parking for additional vehicles on street with a visitors permit (Parking can be very expensive in York especially so close to the historic core of the City)
  • One of the downstairs rooms has been carefully adapted for people with restricted mobility.
  • We offer a substantial continental breakfast including croissants, toast, yoghurt and fruit. Please let us know in advance of any extra dietary requirements
  • We have negotiated discounts with several local independent restaurants and cafes - a list of which is available in your room.

Introducing

Charmian Ottaway

Mike and Charmian live next door. They’re passionate about giving guests a unique experience in the Coal Shed and all their insider information about getting the most out of the city they know and love so well. They put lots of thought into the conversion as they were keen to provide a non-corporate, artistic place to stay. Mike is a planning consultant; Charmian is an artist.
