The Experience

Wake to the wild outside your window and the day ahead to explore. Just a couple of barns in sight, then ten beautiful acres of meadow, trees and water. Downstairs, an unusual oval fireplace is suspended in the sitting room. Settle on the L-shaped sofa with something from the eclectic library and let the weather do as it pleases.

A warm sun room opens straight onto the garden, and there’s a dedicated wet room so muddy boots and hairy hounds can come and go freely. It’s all about getting back to nature here, tucked between coastline, saltmarsh, hills and rain forest.

Six fit easily (there’s room for eight), with an Aga in the kitchen and a long table for convivial meals – you’re left some lovely local goodies to get you started. Three bedrooms are calm and uncluttered: one has a balcony over a walnut tree, there’s a patchwork-quilted twin, and a double sharing a bathroom if someone takes the study’s sofa bed. Evenings mean firing up the barbecue, or gathering around the fire pit set apart from the house, stars overhead and the kind of deep peace that sinks into your bones.

An absolutely grand spot on the Tayvallich peninsula – a stunning land and seascape, with wonderful habitats for birds, flora and fauna. There's much to please everyone, from hiking, cycling, boating, exploring and messing around in water to just sitting in a comfy chair watching the ever-changing skies from indoors. A fabulous antidote to city life.

Location

The neighbourhood

The Tayvallich peninsula is superb for walking, cycling, birdwatching, boating, kayaking, beachcombing, distillery visits, and ancient history. Tayvallich village (four miles) has a café, shop, a harbour popular with yachts, and a good pub. Lochgilphead (15 miles) has a Co-op and an excellent butcher. There's a temperate rainforest in the Nature Reserve, Celtic crosses and an ancient church nearby.

Local points of interest from Shan & Andrew

  • Wander down to the Tayvallich Inn for the finest fresh local seafood and a local dram. Watch the boats bob in the sheltered bay and the waves lap on the forested shores — you may find it hard to leave!
  • Hire a kayak to explore the sheltered waters of Loch Sween. Glide past wooded shores, tiny islands and seals, with Jura stretching across the Sound. Argyll Sea Kayaking Trail beckons for the more adventurous…
  • Step into Scotland’s ancient past at Kilmartin Glen, one of Britain’s finest bronze age sites. Wander among mysterious standing stones, burial cairns and prehistoric monuments, then climb Dunadd — where Scotland’s early kings once ruled.
  • Hop aboard the ferry and escape to Jura for the day. Explore empty beaches, wild hills and famous whisky country, with the Paps rising dramatically behind you. Remote, rugged and gloriously unhurried.
  • Brace yourself for the Corryvreckan, one of the world’s great tidal whirlpools. Take to the water and watch the sea twist and dance between Jura and Scarba. Keep an eye out of the sea eagles soaring overhead too…
