On Mull’s wild northwest coast, your heart will soar. Let it be blown back to the Charringtons’ award-winning farm, a 1,900-acre slice of nature where cattle and sheep roam happily amid birds, orchids and wildlife. Two bumpy miles and four gates from the road, in a cluster of four sea-facing crofters’ cottages (a mile from the farm), your restored traditional ‘blackhouse’ melts into the landscape. Open-plan but for a double room (and through this the neat bathroom) – how special to wake on your handmade oak bed to the sound and sight of the sea? Artworks and ethnic throws bring colour inside, there’s a bright corner kitchen, an alcove dining table with sea views and a wood-burner belting out the heat with a sofa just there for lolling on, book in hand. It’s a magical place for a couple or a small family and it’s blissfully free of mod cons – no TV but plenty of games and books. Heaven to lie in the shared garden watching for red deer by day and shooting stars at night. The setting is dramatic and remote but the welcome is warm, eco principles impressive, and Calgary beach is three miles as the sea eagle flies.
