The Experience

A remote and rugged setting with much comfort indoors. Stephanie and Adrian are a creative, well-travelled pair and their house is packed with warmth and interest, including local art for sale. Be welcomed by home cooking, sink into the views from the sun lounge, sleep soundly in luxurious, very quiet bedrooms. Breakfasts with a delicious twist will set you up for a wonderful day walking in the footsteps of the first Scots through this fascinating history-steeped landscape. Explore the beach, sea loch and woods, discover ‘Britain’s most beautiful short cut by sea’ and from there sail to the Corryvreckan. You won’t have to go out again in the evening, as the house is licensed and Stephanie and Adrian’s dinners are well worth arranging too.

Reviews

Hannah, Malmesbury

My husband and I stayed here for a chunk of our honeymoon, and were blown away by Winterton. The location is breathtaking (whatever the weather), with a plethora of activities on the doorstep. We stayed in the ‘Jura’ room which was light, spacious and well decorated. The view from the bathroom (which has the most delectable bath) is glorious! Stephanie and Adrian are fabulous hosts and cooks! We would highly recommend having dinner at Winterton - their passion, thoughtfulness and attention to detail is unparalleled. We cannot wait to come back!

Alison, Dronfield Woodhouse

This is a very very special place. That very unusual combination of a fabulous location minutes from a stunning beach, combined with super stylish accommodation, really excellent food and the brilliant briefing sessions with hosts Adrian and Stephanie. Their advice and tips for great walks, boat trips and cafes for lovely lunches framed our whole week. It was a very memorable trip and we will certainly be back.

Fiona, Reading

This is a treat of a place! It’s just special! The ambience , the expansive views , the food , the stylish decor, art, furnishings , ultra comfortable beds and bedrooms, swanky bathrooms. Everything is thoughtfully done. Stephanie is a great cook and we ate in all 3 nights and enjoyed really delicious dinners and breakfasts. Adrian is incredibly helpful with suggestions for wonderful walks and where to go. They are great hosts. Like I say the type of place to go to “treat yourselves”!!

Jackie, Monmouth

Where do I start...this is an exceptional place to stay with the warmest of welcomes from Adrian and Stephanie that match the warmth and gentle ambience of the accommodation. Inside Winterton is tasteful and elegant but also provides expansive views onto beautiful Kilmartin Glen. Breakfasts are gorgeous and we chose to sample Stephanie's evening meals too - her passion for providing delicious food is clear and we were just delighted by every morsel. The massages are also excellent and work out very well after a good walk and before dinner!

Karen, North Connel

I had a delightful stay at Winterton. Everything has clearly been very well thought out by Stephanie and Adrian who have created a very special place to stay in Argyll.

  • KILMARTIN GLEN is the most significant area in Scottish history with: CHAMBERED BURIAL CAIRNS, TEMPLE WOOD STONE CIRCLE, award winning KILMARTIN MUSEUM, DUNADD FORT where the Scottish Kings were crowned and ACHNABRECK (finest examples of cup & ring marks)
  • On our doorstep is SEA LOCH CRINAN where you can while away the hours beach combing along miles of sand when the tide is out, looking out towards the isles of JURA, SCARBA and MULL and splashing through shallow pools.
  • Not far from Winterton is MOINE MHOR nature reserve (one of Britain's finest peat-bog habitats for all kinds of flora and fauna). Walk or cycle along the famous CRINAN CANAL between Crinan and Ardrishaig - 14km in total.
  • Many walks and cycle rides cover KNAPDALE FOREST one of which is the famous BEAVER TRAIL. Explore the nature and culture of one of Europe's most evocative and ancient landscapes on a bespoke guided adventure by KAYAK or Foot with 'EXPLORE WILD ARGYLL'
  • The fantastic boat trip with 'Venture West' from CRINAN HARBOUR takes you through Europe's second largest tidal whirlpool - the famous CORRYVRECKAN - you might see dolphins and golden eagles on your way. RIDING: Lunga riding stables (20mins).
  • WHISKY DISTILLERIES: OBAN, ISLAY or JURA (ferry from Kennacraig port) or SPRINGBANK in Campbeltown. INVERARAY - with its CASTLE and JAIL is 45mins drive away. GOLF: Lochgilphead (15mins), Carradale (1hr), Tarbert (45mins), Machrihanish (1.5 hrs)
