The Experience

Swathed by hills and braes, the farm sits between Loch Lomond and the rolling contours of the Campsie Fells. Deborah and Steve are next door and have restored the Old Dairy and Curlew Cottage with wood floors and local red sandstone to the highest eco-standards. Solar panels and underfloor heating keep things cosy while rooms zing with natural light; all is crisp and clean.

Home-baked bread, marmalade and the farm’s own eggs come as standard in the kitchen. Pick some herbs from the box outside and rustle up a feast for friends or family – Deborah can organise a meat order with the local butchers if you wish.

On chilly days throw a log on the wood-burner and put your feet up with a piece of tasty shortbread. At the end of the driveway a small hill (The Dumpling) makes an ideal nursery slope for little climbers, with a dazzling view from the top. The Loch has a Sealife Centre, canoe and cycle hire and cafés. Stirling, Glasgow and Edinburgh aren’t too far.

Reviews

Deborah and Steve have created two superb eco friendly cottages that are light, airy and cosy on their small holding. Curlew is the ideal cottage to have extended family or a girls' get-together. Deborah is extremely helpful and friendly and very happy to provide the extra games for your children, routes to go walking, great places to eat, and more, making it a great place to base your holiday.

Beautiful and relaxing setting, lovely accomodation and very helpful and welcoming hosts. Nice thoughtful touches. A very enjoyable few days.

Jenny, Shrewsbury

We had a most enjoyable week in the Old Dairy. The cottage was spotless and we really appreciated the barbecue that was supplied for our use. The electric car charger made our stay so much easier as we travelled far and wide in Western Scotland enjoying the good weather and amazing scenery. The owners Deborah and Steve are very helpful and friendly.

John and Janet, Daventry

The cottage was very clean and comfortable; renovated to a very high spec, with a lovely view from the sitting room. The sitting room was light and airy and the kitchen area fitted out well. Lovely walks, parks and RSPB sites in the surrounding areas with curlews and oyster catchers within earshot of the cottage. The cottage and its surroundings were very quiet and relaxing. Very convenient location for touring. The welcome pack on arrival was absolutely amazing, with lots of goodies provided. The owners very friendly and helpful. One of the best cottages that we have stayed in.

Vicki, Bangor, Northern Ireland

Modern & homely with everything we could ask for. While the trampoline undercover & a cuddle with some newborn lambs was everything the kids could ask for! Our stay at Curlew Cottage was a perfect Easter break. From the instructions for arrival, the welcome food including homemade bread, & a wood burning stove prepared, all added to the warm welcome. The hosts were attentive & available for requests & suggestions, making sure the kids met their new lambs. The local shop is small but well stocked & walkable along the country road. Plenty of walks and sights on Loch Lomond. Highly recommend.

Introducing

Deborah & Steve Macken

Deborah and Steve live next door; expect a warm welcome. When not ‘living the good life’ on their smallholding they run a renewable energy business. They’ve used their experience to ensure the carbon footprint of the cottages is as small as possible. The farm produces its own honey - pop on a suit and ask Steve to show you around the hives.
