The Experience
With the touch of a button, roll up the blinds and bring the outdoors in. What a way to wake each day! The views are amazing and ever-changing…across the loch to the Cuillin Hills, and Rum and Canna on a cloudless day.
The house, a modern Skye bungalow, was finished in 2020 and furnished in island colours. After a day hiking or wild swimming, you return to this: gliding glass doors and heated floors, divine beds and walk-in showers, Bose speakers and smart TVs, and the finest kit in the kitchen. Cosy up to the wood-burner on a wild night, wallow in the hot tub on a fine one.
Visit the great fortress of Dunvegan, a ten-minute drive, and book lunch at the Old School Restaurant (special in every way). Pick up seafood in Portree, 20 miles – tiny capital of Skye – and treat yourself to tea or fabulous cocktails at the Cuillin Hills Hotel. This island is foodie heaven.

This was one of the best rental experiences we have enjoyed over many years of travelling. Vivienne has done everything to make the house both stunningly beautiful and very relaxing. The standard of fittings is extremely high and waking up each morning to open the electric blinds from the bedside switch and look out on the fantastic scenery was one of many highlights. Arriving to find a bottle of Prosecco in the brilliant welcome pack meant a first night session in the hot tub gazing over the Roag headland, glass in hand, certainly eased us into the stay.

From the moment of driving towards the house we were captivated by the beauty of the location and the exterior of The Captain’s Rest is beautifully presented . Once over the doorstep we were blown away by the stylish and warm decor of the house, it made us feel at home and relaxed immediately. The attention to detail and thought of comfort for guests hit the mark spot on. Beautiful furnishings, a fully equipped kitchen and two incredible bathrooms, sauna and hot tub. Vivienne is a very generous host and had a light supper ready for us. Absolutely amazing property, we can’t wait to return!

Location
The neighbourhood
In tiny Roag, on the outskirts of the coastal village of Dunvegan, the cottage is 12 minutes from three renowned restaurants: The Three Chimneys in Colbost, Lochbay at Waternish, and Edinbane Lodge (book well ahead). And a fabulous modern restaurant and café, The Dunvegan (4 miles). Your views stretch to the loch and to the flat-topped MacLeod's Tables: look forward to a stomping day out.
Local points of interest from Vivienne & Neil Montgomery
- Captain’s Rest is ideally located on the island to visit the many beautiful areas Skye has to offer. Dunvegan Castle, the seat of the MacLeod clan, is in the village. Explore the history it has to offer or saunter around their magnificent gardens.
- There are numerous walks in the area and further afield, too many to mention and for all abilities. We are a short distance from Neist Point, Coral Beach and for the more adventurous a hike up MacLeod’s Tables.
- A half hour drive takes you to Portree, the main town, where you will find shops, restaurants and do pop into Skyeskyns for some gorgeous items or afternoon tea on the law, if weather permit, at the Cuillin Hills Hotel overlooking the bay.
- You no doubt travel a considerable distance to get to us, so when you arrive, out your feet up, savour the view and enjoy the complimentary light supper awaiting you, normally a selection of Scottish cheeses, quiche etc. Ours is no ordinary welcome pack!
- The island is a foodie’s paradise with so much to choose from and when you reserve the cottage, recommendations are listed in our digital welcome pack which will be emailed to you in plenty time to make reservations.
- A special occasion? Please do let us know. We like our guests to have the best experience! Need flowers, birthday cake, getting married and need advice, just ask and we can put you in touch with some of the best on the island.

Introducing
Vivienne & Neil Montgomery
Vivienne inherited the croft, Neil (a stonemason by profession) worked on the house, and they live with their family 15 minutes away. You can let yourselves in with a key safe and Vivienne will pop round to meet you the next day, happy to answer all your questions. Excited about their new project, your hosts are approachable, generous people, and they know the island inside out.
A wonderful house in a magical location, the owners go above and beyond to make your stay special. The house is beautifully furnished and the hot tub and sauna are welcome treats following our long walks and fun filled days.
