The Experience
This light and airy open-plan space is a joy to walk into. Find a velvet sofa, a wood-burner for cosy winter evenings, lovely lighting and wide windows for ever-changing views. Bring binoculars if you like birds – you’ll see plenty – including sea eagles and golden eagles. Cook in the kitchen to the side, it’s all shipshape and Bristol fashion and everything has its place. You eat at the window so you can carry on sighing at the views.
Head out on shoreline walks, looking for dolphins and whales, or into the forest and a myriad of trails. Return to your cosy nest for a sparkling walk-in shower with Arran Aromatic soaps and shampoo and, up the spiral stairs, a very comfortable bed with skylights above you. On clear nights you can stargaze until you fall asleep, nothing will disturb the peace.
If you don’t feel like cooking it’s an eight-minute stumble to the Stein Inn or Michelin-starred Loch Bay.

We loved our stay at the Byre. The central area made it easy to access all that we wanted to see on Skye while also feeling tucked away. The heated floors and wood burning stove kept the house nice and toasty. We especially appreciated the local treats that Iain left for us. We cooked breakfast each day and everything we needed was in the kitchen. We also enjoyed stargazing through the skylights in the bedroom. We would definitely stay here again!

A really amazing place to share some memories and enjoy the isle of skye. The house was just perfect, warm, cozy. Iain was super helpful, the recommendations were great. Overall if you’re looking for a really peaceful stay that feels just like home. It is just the place! Thank you so much for everything.

Perfect location, very quiet, but within walking distance to a Michelin star restaurant and the island’s oldest pub; great place to explore the island, we have seen most attractions around the island; definitely recommend to stay if you look for a nice location!

Gather your latest (or even long time) squeeze and come for a bit of romance. Long walks, lots of wildlife spotting, swimming, boat trips, excellent restaurants to book into, a swish little kitchen and a very comfortable sitting room with a warming wood-burner and views. Up the wiggly stairs to a star-gazing spot under the eaves and a peaceful night.

The Byre was incredible! The home was beyond our expectations - meticulously clean, beautiful decor, sweeping ocean views! Full kitchen with everything we needed to cook with during our stay! Fun to walk around and explore the area - great central location to access Portree, and other local destinations including hiking in Quiraing and Neist Point. So cozy with the fireplace and TV too! The hosts were also super accommodating/responsive while giving us complete privacy. One of the best holiday cottages we have ever stayed in!

Location
The neighbourhood
Waternish has endless shorelines for walkers and trails for running and cycling. Visit Dunvegan (a 12-minute drive) for a magnificent castle, walled garden and very good food in the restaurant. You'll also find a small food store and an organic veg shop. Wild swimmers can visit the Fairy Pools or head to Coral Beach, made from crushed coral and with turquoise waters when the sun shines.
Local points of interest from Iain Allinson
- Ideally and centrally located for Skye's major attractions, a 40 minute drive West takes you to the Fairy Pools, Talisker and the Cuillin Ridge. A 40 min drive East and you will arrive at the Fairy Glen, Quiraing, Kilt Rock and the Old Man of Storr!
- Skye Skyns (the only 5 star rated tourist attraction on Skye) is a 3 minute stroll uphill behind Tern House with a fully operational tannery. In summer months, look out for the 'Yurt Tea' cafe with soups, coffees and cakes readily available.
- Beautiful Stein beneath Tern House was a Thomas Telford designed village and is now preserved. It was original intended to be the ferry terminal for sailings to Harris, but latterly found fame as home to the only Michelin starred restaurant on Skye!
- Light pollution is minimal on Skye. Come outside Tern House and look up on a clear night to see the Milky Way running directly over your head. Lucky guests also have a chance to see the Northern Lights, though they are notoriously tricky to predict!
- The local walk to Waternish point gives a panoramic view of the entire Outer Hebrides islands at it's end, as well as taking you past several famous battle sites and multiple well preserved 1000 year old round stone 'Broch' fortresses.
- Below Tern House in the village of Stein, tours leave in summer months to St. Kilda (4 hours). This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located beyond the Outer Hebrides to the West with an astonishing geography and an amazing history.

Introducing
Iain Allinson
Iain and Caroline spent many years visiting Skye before finally taking the plunge and setting up The Byre and Tern House. They both love the outdoors and cooking, so creating a beautiful space with incredible views in deep nature was very important to them. They also wanted guests to be near to everything Skye has to offer – great restaurants, beaches, seafood and wildlife watching.
Iain’s place was incredible!! Truly magical. The location is great, the space is comfortable and everything about it was amazing. Staying at the Byre added so much to our trip. We truly looked forward to coming back to it at the end of each day. Thank you for sharing it with us!!
