The Experience

Come to eat very well indeed and to experience seemingly effortless efficiency with great attention to detail behind the scenes – the owners and staff here really know what they’re doing. Spend time in the lounge – a huge room with large picture windows overlooking the bay, where you can enjoy the best coffee on Skye, see local art, play games or simply sit quietly with a book.

When it’s time to eat you’ll be happy: all is cooked over wood fire, and there is a set tasting menu every night. The difference here is that the owners know the name of the guy who caught the lobster, they know where the mussels were grown, the meat is grass fed on regenerative farms and the vegetables and salads come from their croft, two miles up the road. Food is their passion, and they’ll happily give you a tour of the kitchen if you ask.

Simple, beautiful bedrooms sit upstairs and all have blissful views, local wool, sink-into beds, and delicious-smelling soaps.

We think you'll love

  • The food – even breakfast is a foodie celebration with freshly baked bread, charcuterie, homemade granola, local yogurt and cheeses from the dairy
  • The very happy atmosphere – there's more of a buzzing art gallery vibe than a stuffy hotel feel
  • Enjoying nature all around you, walking, cycling and – for the brave – a wild swim in the loch

Reviews

The Dunvegan's ethos towards its locally sourced food and sustainability values is very impressive. The kitchen tour, tasting menu and partnering wine flight is definitely a must-do.

Location

The neighbourhood

Fresh air, mountains and sea – the walking and cycling (bring your own bikes) is excellent. Dunvegan Castle is a ten-minute walk and has lovely gardens to visit. The village has places to eat (though none matches where you're staying) and a bookshop. Torabhaig Distillery (one hour, 15 mins) runs whisky tasting tours and Claigan Coral beach is just over four miles for white sands and turquoise sea.

Local points of interest from Tim & Blair Hunter Davies

  • Portree - main town on Skye for shops, restaurants, markets and harbour
  • Skye Skyns - tannery
  • Shilasdair - yarn dyers
  • Skye Weavers - pedal powered weavers
  • Dunvegan Show in July - great local event

Introducing

Tim & Blair Hunter Davies

Blair and Tim both have backgrounds in design and it shows. Their main drivers are food (the level of detail is staggering) and sustainability. They are committed to growing their own vegetables, salads and edible flowers, reducing carbon footprint, encouraging re-use and recycling, and removing unnecessary plastics. They know their patch incredibly well and they and their team look after you with aplomb.
