The Experience

The house sleeps eight and the cottage four – both with open-plan spaces, bright colours, big prints on the walls, comfy leather sofas and wood-burners. Kitchens, to the side, are very well equipped but you can wander two miles to the inn for fabulous food. Here you’ll find a farm-to-plate philosophy, with produce from the estate and nearby, an in-house butchery and an innovative menu. There’s also a private dining room for parties up to 12.

It’s peaceful here – you’ll sleep soundly in bedrooms with big comfortable beds, some can be twins, and all have sparkling en suite bathrooms. Walks or cycles from the door will lead you through some gorgeous countryside and there are endless opportunities for day trips – learn to fly fish (you can book through the owners’ website), play golf, visit castles and gardens.

Long summer evenings can be spent having al fresco suppers, playing games on the lawn, watching the sun go down and then enjoying a bit of stargazing – there’s little light pollution up here.

Location

The neighbourhood

History buffs will enjoy visiting Blair Atholl, Glamis Castle or Scone Palace. Garden lovers can admire The Meikleour Hedge, the tallest beech hedge in the world. You can learn to fly fish from a pebble beach on the river Tay, have a crack at clay pigeon shooting, head to Blairgowrie (four miles) for golf and shops. Visit Kinclaven Castle (two miles) and a magnificent bluebell wood (three miles).

Local points of interest from Claire Mercer Nairne

  • Bring some sensible shoes and enjoy the surroundings. The steps just outside the fence will take you to the Lunan Burn walk: deer, owls, kingfishers and if you quietly approach the water at dusk, you may spot a beaver.
  • I love Dunkeld & Birnam: park in the town and head towards the cathedral. There is a circle walk along the river Tay. Another great walk nearby is the Hermitage (spectacular waterfall) and don’t miss the ancient Birnam Woods celebrated in Macbeth.
  • The excellent Blairgowrie Golf club is less than 5 mins away: two championship courses, a 9 hole and a range at your doorsteps. Book through us to benefit from our special prices. If you want a lesson, Dylan is your man, see our website for details.
  • Blair Atholl Castle, impressive 13th century family owned castle is definitely worth a visit. Much loved by Queen Victoria who left her marks, it has stunning grounds and gardens. Combine with House of Bruar visit.
  • For an active family day out enjoyed by all, book a gentle canoe tour at Willowgate in Perth, there are numerous options to explore. If the younger generation needs some adrenaline rush, try river tubing or gorge walking with Nae Limits in Pitlochry.
  • Visit Scone Palace (10 mins away), the crowning place of Macbeth. Don’t miss the pinetum and the maze (with a racy fountain at the centre) Excellent coffee shop for a scone at Scone. Then head to Kinnoull Hill for a spectacular view of Perth (great walk).

Introducing

Claire Mercer Nairne

Sam (Scottish) and Claire (French) are the current Lord and Lady Meikleour. They met whilst working in Singapore; in 2000 Sam inherited the estate from his grandfather and they began to bring the place back to life. Now the farming part of the business is thriving and they have turned their attention to welcoming guests to the coaching inn and cottages.
