The Longhouse is architect designed and on the family croft, with houses behind and views across grass rushes to the sea. Clad in stone and larch that’s slowly turning silver, this beautiful single-storey house has a pop-out balcony too. Inside all is polished, perfect, and flooded with light. Bedrooms, bathrooms and living space seamlessly spread themselves out, with the kitchen down a couple of steps and the mezzanine above (a sofa-bedded sitting space teens will love, with computer and WiFi). Imagine white walls, bleached wood and touches of pale blue – a cool, pared-back décor in serene Scandi style. Glass doors glide open to a wraparound deck, perfect for a sundowner at dusk or a barbecue on a warm night. South-facing bedrooms have fabulous touches – modern chandeliers, Harris tweed throws – and from the bath you look up and see the stars. Empty beaches abound on Lewis, as do tiny coves. Spot grey geese, corncrakes and Lapwing heron in the rushes; fish for trout on the river. There’s a farmers’ market in Stornoway, and shops in the village, a ten-minute stroll.
