The Experience
Deep in the Cambrian Mountains, this 300-year-old stone cottage was once a working woollen mill and echoes of the past still ring in the whitewashed walls and crooked ceilings. The house, which has been lovingly restored by owners Tanya and Duncan, is bright, warm and spacious. But the real joy lies outside in the rambling garden with views over the wild western edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park.
Sip your morning coffee on the terrace and soak up the birdsong, take a bracing dip in the crystal clear stream which rushes along at the bottom of the garden, then jump into the wood-fired hot tub to warm up. There are countless walks to be had in every direction. Tanya knows the area like the back of her hand and will happily share the inside track on her native land.
When night falls, gather around the fire pit and marvel at the brilliance of the stars before tumbling into bed and drifting off to the soothing sounds of the river outside.

Location
The neighbourhood
Although less than a mile from the nearest village, the house feels a world away from modern life. Call ahead to the nearest pub, the Towy Bridge Inn (2 miles) to check opening hours. Llandovery (3 miles) has an independent butcher and baker - Tanya has a good foodie guide. The town’s annual Sheep Festival in September is a lively affair with races attracting heavy betting among locals.

Introducing
Cambrian Escapes
Tanya and Duncan live in the small farmhouse close by. They both worked in London in the public sector before the move here although Tanya grew up in Wales. They are rightly proud of what they have achieved in the restoration of the buildings and the ongoing partnership they are achieving with nature through their land restoration project.
Only the inside of Glan-yr-afon has changed: the building is still a woollen mill on the outside, the river still could power the machines... the sense of real history is all around. But it's now a place of leisure and delight, spacious, secluded, in the heart of nature. Here you can cut yourself off as much or as little, taking advantage of a very special house for young and old.
