The Experience

It feels remote here but you’re actually not far from good pubs, restaurants and fabulous outdoor stuff inland or on the coast. This is one of five cottages on the Wern Estate; inside is irresistibly warm and tasteful with a big fire for chilly days, plenty of seating for four and good books about the area, so it’s comfortable to spend time planning what you’d like to do next.

The small galley kitchen is spanking new and well thought out – in fact everything here is, with space in bathrooms for sponge bags, full-length mirrors on the backs of wardrobes – nothing has been done on the cheap. You’ll find milk in the fridge, fresh flowers, unlimited logs, homemade cake, Welsh cakes, good coffee and all the basics for cooking in the cupboard.

Bring bikes – there’s a cycle path down to Criccieth (1.5 miles) and the 1930s building designed by Clough Williams Ellis now a super restaurant called Dylans that faces the sea. Explore the castles here or drive to Harlech for a bigger one. You are inside the Snowdonia National Park for white-water rafting, zip wires, fishing and mountain biking. There’s outdoor seating, a barbecue for mild evenings and you can watch the stars come out as you lie back in the hot tub.

What fabulous "off grid" luxury. Absolutely stunning!

Suzanna, London

This is a great holiday cottage. Good location, tucked away in the countryside without being overlooked, and easily accessible to the local towns of Portmadog & Criccieth, fabulous local beaches, and the Snowdonia mountains (we hiked Snowdon from Pen-y-pass). Inside the house is of very high quality, comfy living rooms bedrooms, open fire (with lots of wood), well equipped kitchen and high speed broadband. There's plenty of space to chill out and a big hallway to dump bags, walking boots, etc. Highly recommend booking

I am really sorry not to have written to thank you earlier for our lovely stay at Y Boncyn a couple of weeks ago. It was just as lovely as we remembered! The perfect place to curl up and read a book by the fire while the rain pelts down outside! You really have thought of everything and I appreciate the generosity of small details so much. Holiday rentals are often so disappointing because, whilst they look good at first glance, there is no care taken to make sure they are truly comfortable and beautiful. Not Y Boncyn!

Katy, Royston

Beautiful location, peaceful and away from other houses. The property is also absolutely lovely, decorated simply and a great size for the four of us and our dog. Hot tub takes a long time to set up (give yourself a couple of hours!) but once going is great. Loads to do nearby, but also nice to just chill out at the house

We stayed at Y Boncyn for almost a week and is located in a beautiful part of Wales. The cottage is very well equipped and comfortable. Both Tamar and Kerrie were responsive and helpful. The EV charger came in very handy too as there’s no fast charging near by. There are many walks and things to do in the area, and the cottage itself is surrounded by nature. We would not hesitate to stay again. Thank you.

Loved it all... the location... the goats... We felt like we were in a postcard landscape, yet not far at all from civilisation. Kerrie was great, very friendly and helpful. As we mentioned in the visitor book, we loved the design of the house, all the lovely attention to detail and the general high standard of comfort.

Claire, Geneva

Would highly recommend Y Boncyn to anyone looking for accommodation in this area. The cottage is in a beautiful setting and very well appointed. Kerrie the house keeper was amazing, we even arrived to a wonderful gift basket that Kerrie had specifically sourced as we are vegan.

Alexander, Liverpool

Loved the location and comfort of Y Boncyn, we had lots of places to walk our dogs and were 10 minutes away from 2 really lovely dog friendly beaches. We felt really relaxed and enjoyed our stay so much that were very sad to leave and plan to book for next year.

Rhonda, Lincoln

Absolutely beautiful house and setting. Incredibly well kitted out - right down to the badminton rackets in the cupboard (unfortunately too windy to use them!). Kerrie the housekeep was lovely, and even pressed my clothes when we left them in the drier a bit too long. Watching the sunset in the hot tub was a highlight for me and my husband, and the dog loved having the run of the garden. Baby enjoyed watching the sheepdog puppies in their training. We've already talked about when we might book again.

Terri, Windsor

Fantastic. Y Boncyn is one of the best holiday cottages we have ever stayed in. Highly recommend.

Tristan, Dartmouth

Fantastic secluded spot … right in the middle of nature. Property itself is even better than the pics. Not the place if u want to walk to bars and restaurants but a short drive to all spots on the peninsula … a really memorable stay

James, Stretford

Y Boncyn is peaceful, beautifully appointed and Kerrie is wonderful at looking after the guests. The walks around the house are great and it's ideally situated for Criccieth, Harlech and Porthmadog.

Lucy, Buckhurst Hill

Thoroughly enjoyable and restful break at Y Boncyn. Lovely views from the house which was really comfortable to sit back and relax after a day exploring. Lots of space for our daughter to play and she loved seeing the sheep every day.

Thomas, Ipswich

A very special, peaceful, secluded place to stay and from which to enjoy the many attractions of a stunningly beautiful part of Wales. I look forward to returning yet again.

Malcolm, London

What a charming cottage in a truly beautiful setting! The cottage itself was lovely, even nicer than pictures, I would say. Beautiful light sitting room with a great fireplace, clean, contemporary bathrooms and kitchen. The fabric and decor was great and made for an extremely comfortable stay. Even in winter, stunning landscapes and lots of good exploring within an hours drive in all directions. My daughter loved climbing the hills and exploring behind the cottage, lots of sheep for company. We’d love to come back!

Sara, Chedglow

This is a beautiful cottage and a perfect retreat for rest and relaxation. I love the proximity to the beaches of the Lleyn Peninsula and the hills and mountains of Snowdonia. I've been staying at these cottages regularly for a decade. They feel like home-from-home, a haven from my very busy every day life. The little touches, like the breakfast pack, the beautiful interior designs, and now even a hot tub, make me look forward to returning for many years to come.

Lucy, Cheltenham

Y Boncyn is a superb retreat exceeding all expectations with the charm of a beautiful stone cottage set in complete seclusion on an extensive private woodland estate, and furnished in impeccable taste. A housekeeper is on hand for helpful advice and sheep surround you in the park to complete the country idyll. A superb restaurant is five minutes away in Tremadog and amongst many beautiful unspoilt beaches Llanbedrog is not far away.

Michael, Derby

Our first time at this cottage and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Very comfortable.

Shirley, Dorchester

We had a gorgeous stay at Y Boncyn. The photos don't do justice to the precision and beauty of the house both inside and out. Incredible care has been taken over the interior design and the inclusion of everything needed to make a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The location down a country track is remote and peaceful, while only 5 minutes drive to a lovely seaside town with great ice cream and fish and chips. There's loads to do in this quiet and unspoilt corner of Wales and I would return in a heartbeat.

Location

The neighbourhood

The front garden is just that – a fenced-off square of grass that blends seamlessly into the surrounding rough North Welsh countryside, dotted with many sheep. You can follow the sun around the house all day. Walk, or cycle, to Criccieth for the beach, a good restaurant and pubs. By car explore the magnificent castles of Harlech (14 miles) and Caernarfon (17). Portmeirion, the unusual village designed by Clough Williams Ellis, is closer and a bit like marmite – people either love it or hate it. The National Park surrounds you for walks big and small, challenging cycling and as much adventure as you can stand.

Local points of interest from Tamar Ferguson

  • 2000 Acre private rural Estate surrounded by oak woodlands. The gardens are lawned and private.
  • You can fish in our private lake at a very reasonable cost. Our lake has been stocked solely for the use of our guests.
  • Black Rock Sands is a must - the beach is so vast that you can drive your car onto it. Perfect for dog walking, shell collecting, windsurfing or just having a good old run about.
  • Portmeirion is only a short drive away. Created by Clough Williams-Ellis (the owner of the cottage is David Williams-Ellis - Clough's great nephew). Iconic architecture, scenic walks, restaurants, cafes and old fashioned ice cream parlours.
  • Llanbedrog is a charming little seaside village with a superb beach and the most famous line of beach huts in North Wales. Visit the Oriel Plas Glyn Y Weddw Gallery for homemade cake and see David's (the owner of Y Boncyn) sculpture "Louise" in the garden.
  • Our delightful housekeeper is happy to cook a welcome meal ready for your arrival at a very reasonable cost.
