The Experience

Thread your way down the winding streets of St Davids, Britain’s tiniest city, to this sturdy stone cottage, one of three. It is the furthest from the road, the closest to the garden, and has the best views, across rooftops and distant hills to Ramsey Island, breeding ground of peregrines and seabirds.

Explore the architecturally fascinating 12th-century cathedral – one of Britain’s finest – tucked in a hollow beside the river. The Bishop’s Palace lies on the other bank, an atmospheric ruin in which Shakespeare’s plays are performed on summer nights.

Hop on a ferry to Ramsey Island from three miles down the road, walk a lazy mile to probe caves and rock pools at Caerfai Bay; surfers will head for Whitesands Bay just below and you can hire kayaks at Abereiddi’s Blue Lagoon. Wander to the pub for supper or fire up the barbecue in the garden on summer evenings.

Reviews

We come back to Bwthyn Lil year after year. The setting is lovely; privately nestled just steps from the centre of St David’s, with great views and a well tended (shared) garden. The cottage is welcoming, comfortable, well equipped and superbly maintained.

Joanna, Chester

A beautiful cottage with a lovely garden and incredible views. We couldn’t fault our stay.

Elizabeth, Durham

This is possibly the finest Holiday Cottage in the whole of Wales! It is furnished to a very high standard and is exceptionally clean and in a beautiful location, just minutes away from the magnificent St David's Cathedral, and a twenty minute walk to Porth Clais on the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path. We have been returning each year since about 2010. Looking forward to our annual visit later this year.

Peter, Cheltenham

We stayed at Bwthyn Lil for a week over Easter. A great cottage with lots of character in the heart of St David’s. It is exceptionally clean and comfortable, with a well equipped kitchen and wood burner for cosy evenings in. It is a perfect location for walking from the door, with the coast path and miles of wild coastline to explore only a short walk away. The setting is very peaceful, with views out over the Cathedral. Hamish keeps the garden immaculate, and this is a lovely place to rest after a day walking the peninsula. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Martin, Cirencester

Perfect in every way - a beautiful cottage, in the best spot in St.Davids. With parking and a privates south facing garden. Unbelievably comfortable beds, top of the drawer appliances and kitchen utensils, a wood burner for the occasional cool evening, even Netflix. But who need that when you can walk out of the door and hit the Coastal path in minutes. No need to use the car. Two fabulous restaurants 5 minutes walk away and the local pubs on your doorstep too. Plus the fabulous Dawn who looks after the cottage and its guests.Nothing is too much trouble.A blissful retreat from a mad, mad world

Susan, Manchester

Bwthyn Lil is a superb characterful cottage, well maintained, well equipped, clean, comfortable and relaxing. It is tucked away in a quiet street, with off road parking, yet yards from the centre of town and the cathedral, it shares a beautiful tranquil garden with the other 2 Ty Gwilym cottages. St David’s has a good range of shops from food to clothes and quality gift shops, lots of places to eat and drink, and is not too ‘touristy’. Great beaches are a short drive or walk away. There is lots to see and do in the immediate area as well as further afield.

Elizabeth, York

We stayed 5 nights in this beautifully designed and furnished cottage overlooking the cathedral. The location is brilliant, we walked to the coastpath on 2 days rather than get in the car and there are plenty of places to eat if you don't want to cook. If you do cook the kitchen is so well-equipped it makes it easy. There are lots of thoughtful extras provided. We loved the pictures on the walls and view from our bedroom window and there is a balcony for warmer times. The garden is really well cared for and designed to make the most of the space with 3 seating areas. Wonderful!

Nia, Aberystwyth

Bwthyn Lil is a lovely cottage set off the road in central St Davids. The cottage is equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay and the tin of homemade Welshcakes was a lovely touch to welcome us. The lounge is lovely and cozy and the log burner worked well. We particularly liked the fact that there was plenty of wood available and more stored outside. The view from one of the double rooms is stunning, particularly on a sunny day. Having stayed in St Davids numerous times, I can confidently say that this is the best cottage I’ve stayed in. Diolch!

Rachel, Carmarthen

The cottage is furnished to an exceptionally high standard, was spotlessly clean and when we arrived Dawn dropped in to give us all the house information. Everything was as promised, with the heating on making it very warm and welcoming. And of course the view over the cathedral is second to none. Combined with good weather to take advantage of the spectacular walks, the lovely wood burning stove built up each evening to keep us warm and cosy, we couldn’t have asked for more. We will definitely be back and will have no hesitation in recommending you to friends and family.

Claire, Swansea

Absolutely brilliant. Very central in St David’s. Beautiful cottage that is incredibly well supplied and super clean. Comfy beds and soft towels. Cosy base from which to explore this beautiful part of the country. Thanks for all the recommendations, particularly enjoyed nights in by the fire! Could not recommend more highly

Clemmie, London

3 of us stayed a week in this delightful cottage, which was warm, comfortable and sparkling clean. The kitchen had lots of utensils for cooking, but this cottage is on the Main Street, where there are lots of good eateries. We had a local point of contact (Dawn), who was very helpful and we wanted for nothing. The brilliant weather helped make this a memorable visit, but Bwthyn Lil really felt like home. Top Marks to Hamish and Linda.

Barbara, Cirencester

The cottage was delightful, very well equipped and cosy. It had a balcony from the main bedroom and a lovely shared garden with a great view where we saw glorious sunsets. It had everything we needed for a perfect week's stay.

Tina, Chiddingfold

The perfect cottage, perfect location, perfect place. This cottage is everything you could wish for to make a stay in this gorgeous part of the world. Kitted with everything from a wood burner to feather pillows. Spotless, welcoming and even has that rare commodity parking. Whatever the weather it is really perfect. Beautiful garden and amazing accommodating owner. Just joyous.

Susan, Manchester

Location amazing, St David's is on your doorstep, then easy driving to many attractions across west Wales. This is one of three rentals in the same building, but the walls are thick so you don't hear your neighbours, with great views of the cathedral, away from the road and street noise. Lovely the shared garden, gets afternoon sunshine. The house has all you'll need, good kitchen with dishwasher, water / dryer, fridge and freezer. TV has Freeview and Netflix. Bedrooms are very comfortable and airy. One bathroom with good shower over bath. This is the perfect getaway in Wales

Tim, Newbury

After many weeks of being in lockdown it was absolutely wonderful to get away to the beautiful St Davids. We stayed in Bwthyn Lil with our two children (ages 10 and 8) and the space worked perfectly. We have stayed in Hamish and Linda's cottages for many years and they never ever disappoint - so beautifully decorated and to such a high standard. We were fortunate to enjoy some amazing weather - allowing us the opportunity to walk to the beach, go on some glorious walks along the pembrokeshire coastline and eat outside in the evenings in the beautiful garden! Highly recommend!

Beccy, Hampshire

We have been visiting St Davids for over 10 years and after discovering Bwthyn Lil if we can not stay here we re-plan our trip to ensure we can stay around availability. The property is full of character, wonderfully and tastefully appointed and always perfectly presented. The support and help from the owners is second to none and without question staying here has enhanced every trip we have made to St Davids. The views from the property never fail to impress and the property further benefits from off street parking. I have no hesitation in highly recommending Bwthyn Lil and the owners.

Peter, Bristol

The accommodation was charming and situated close to the heart of St David's, offering the benefit of a lovely garden overlooking the Cathedral with far reaching views of the sea. The cottage was very well equipped and we also enjoyed the log stove. Wales has had weeks of summer sunshine but we had gales and heavy rain! On the one day of sunshine the beaches proved beautiful with low cliffs, with even disabled access to the blue lagoon cove - brilliant for pushing the baby in the pram! The area itself would benefit from indoor recreation facilities for rainy days.

L, Gloucester

Having spent many happy family holidays in this area as a child, I really wanted this stay with my wife and young family to be special. I did not disappoint! Everything was spot on, from contact with the owners to the quality, comfort and location of the cottage. The views of Carn Llidi and the Cathedral from the beautiful, secluded garden were really wonderful. I can highly recommend staying at this cottage.

Michael, Cambridge

We found this "Perfect" Cottage. An unsurpassed location, set in the heart of this tiny city with the coast path & beaches minutes away. Peaceful and beautiful, with Cathedral and mountain views from upstairs, parking ( a rarity in St Davids), a south facing garden complete with seating, BBQ and a fantastic lavender garden. You will be met by lovely Dawn who gives a comprehensive ( if needed) guide to the Miele washer/dryer, the log burner, & TV/Netflix. This cottage has a really well equipped kitchen, comfortable sitting room and a bath as well as a shower! A gem! Our absolute favourite.

Susan, Manchester

Everything about Bwthyn Lil is delightful! From the moment you walk through the door you feel welcomed. The kitchen is well-equipped and cosy for eating and the living room idyllic, with its log burner and comfortable sofa and chairs. Upstairs, the bedrooms are comfortable and the bathroom luxurious (big bath for chilling out!) The whole cottage has lots of special touches, is spotlessly clean and obviously loved by the owners and Dawn, who manages these cottages for them. I’m sure it must be fantastic in summer with the bedroom balcony and view but it’s wonderfully cosy in winter!

Location

The neighbourhood

The cottages are a minute’s walk from the centre of a city that is charmingly small and unashamedly old-fashioned. Discover craft shops, food shops, restaurants and pubs, including the Farmer's Arms on the same street. The 12th-century cathedral, the finest in Wales, hides down a hill, and wonderful beaches abound – Whitesands, Caerfai, Abereiddi. Coastal walks are a ten-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Hamish Elvidge

  • Whitesand Bay is a wonderful sandy beach within five minutes drive and is great for surfing and sandcastles!
  • St Davids Cathedral is the focal point of the city and must be visited!
  • Great restaurants( for example Morgans and Cwtch) are plentiful in St Davids and the surrounding area.
  • A trip around Ramsey Island cannot be missed, to see the seals and, hopefully dolphins!
  • Abereiddi and the Blue Lagoon create a very unqiue atmosphere.
  • Pothgain is a unique, beautiful harbour, which has a really good restaurant (The Shed) and pub (The Sloop)

Introducing

Hamish Elvidge

The owners are Linda and Hamish Elvidge, and Dawn Hughes is the meeter and greeter. A native of St Davids, she is friendly and informative, and fiercely proud of the three cottages she cleans and the garden she so meticulously tends.
