The Experience

Enjoy a G&T in the pretty south-facing garden; sometimes you’ll have it to yourselves. You’re in the heart of Britain’s tiniest city with private lawns, brimming borders and views over the cathedral roof to the skyline.

A former farmhouse, there’s plenty of room, and games to play, round the wood-burner in the living room and at the big wooden refectory table in the kitchen, so everybody can help cook. There’s a quiet study if you fancy escaping with a book.

Hop on a ferry to Ramsey Island from three miles down the road, walk a lazy mile to explore caves and rock pools at Caerfai Bay; surfers will head for Whitesands Bay just below and you can hire kayaks at Abereiddi’s Blue Lagoon. There’s a downstairs shower room for de-sanding and a barbecue to fire up in the garden.

Reviews

We enjoyed our stay at Hamish's cottage. Our rooms with private baths were amazing. The beds were super comfortable. We really enjoyed the fully stocked kitchen and cooked many meals there. The view of the cathedral was a bonus!! We enjoyed the garden and the beautiful hydrangeas, rosemary and lavendar that were blooming. Saint David's is a friendly little city. The goat gallery was a favorite as well as meeting some locals who took us under their wing one rainy day at the wool factory!! The hiking was very convenient and amazing. We will be back to the Pembrokeshire coast and Hamish's

This is our third stay at Ty Gwilym and as always it's a really relaxed holiday. The house is well equipped and perfectly located for walks and beaches in and around St David's. We had amazing weather and made good use of the lovely garden overlooking the cathedral. Comfy beds and plenty of space to spread out make it a great property for families.

Karen, Oxford

A beautiful property equipped to the very highest levels. Though in the centre of St David's remained quiet at all times. Very good eateries within less than a minute's walk. Highly recommended

Richard, Bewdley

I stayed at Ty Gwilym with 2 friends and it was perfect! There is plenty of space and the 3 double bedrooms would easily accommodate a family or 3 couples. It is so generously, thoughtfully and tastefully equipped throughout. We stayed in February and particularly appreciated the log burner and Netflix for cosy evenings. The location is great, just minutes from the cathedral but also giving easy access to cliff walks. I can’t recommend Ty Gwilym highly enough!

Dorothy, Hereford

Ty Gwilym is a brilliantly located house. It's right in the middle of St. Davids, only a stone's throw from the cathedral and a couple of pubs but nonetheless is quiet and has parking. The house was clean and very comfortable. It was warm and cosy with very comfortable beds and linens. Well-equipped and easy to use kitchen with a large table to eat around. The housekeeper was accommodating and friendly. Nice to have some games and toys as well. Our youngest was delighted with the lego and the oldest with the study with views of the cathedral. Overall a really relaxing and easy place to be.

Emily, London

We had a fabulous break in St David’s at this beautiful cottage - spotlessly clean with incredibly comfortable beds and three lovely bathrooms and a study! There was a big well equipped kitchen with Miele appliances (washing machine and drier plus dishwasher) and a good sized living room with real wood burner stove. Great communication from Hamish the owner who seamlessly moved our booking once it became clear the second lockdown wouldn’t be lifted in time for us to visit earlier in 2021. Thank you to Dawn who meets the visitors on arrival as she does the cleaning. Highly recommended!

Amanda, Budleigh Salterton

Had a super week in this beautiful cottage. Can't praise it enough. Quality of accommodation, comfort and standard of furnishings and equipment were second to none allowing for a perfect stay. On-site assistance from Dawn was excellent. Would highly recommend.

Colin & Chris, Near Bodmin, Cornwall

A high quality cottage in St Davids with a superb cleanliness. Important in these Covid times.

Ian, Winchester

We had a lovely stay at Ty Gwilym cottage for 4 nights. The cottage is absolutely beautiful, was extremely clean and there was everything you needed and more whilst staying there. From booking to leaving, it was all very easy and always so friendly - not forgetting the Welsh cakes on arrival! We cannot wait to book and go again next year.

Natalie, Swansea

We have been staying at Ty Gwilym for about 10 years now and we love the place. It feels like a home away from home. The location is fantastic and excellently maintained and spotlessly clean.

Ed, Bristol

Truly a fantastic property in one of the most beautiful locations in St. Davids. Located a stones throw from the main square, yet secluded and private with a south facing garden with seating+ BBQ. It's a gem. The house is more than a home from home - it's better. Gorgeous 8-seater dining kitchen with every mod con, and a log fire (fully supplied) in the lovely comfortable separate sitting room. More delight as you explore upstairs - a study/playroom before the main landing, with and three fantastic large bedrooms (1 super king) with the luxury of 3 showers + a full bathroom.

Susan, Manchester

Lovely place! Ideally placed in the centre of St David’s. Beautiful gardens within earshot of the cathedral bells. The sun even shone. What’s not to love?

Angela, Stockport

Clean, beautiful and generously generously appointed cottage. Hamish and team were helpful and easy to deal with. We could not ask for more. A great cottage in a great location.

Grant, Manchester

We all had a fabulous holiday made even more enjoyable by the really lovely and comfortable house we called home for the week . It was a delight to walk into such a welcoming house after our long journey . The kitchen was very well equipped,( Welsh cakes awaiting on our arrival) the bedrooms were comfortable .....amazing nights sleep in luxurious cotton bedding. The lounge was so cosy when we lit the log burner after a days hiking along the cliffs . We were delighted when we returned after a walk one day to find more logs had been placed in the outhouse after it had appeared empty that morn

Annette, Burton in Kendal

Ty Gwilym is stunning! The house offers everything you could possibly need and perfectly located in St.David’s, meaning you never really need to get in your car again once you’ve parked up! We especially enjoy this area in winter and the coastal walks are so beautiful and easily accessible. I cannot recommend this property highly enough.

Ruth, Evesham

We stayed in this beautiful cottage with my parents and our two young children. It was so comfortable and beautifully decorated. We all slept so well–in fact my children slept better than at home!We cooked lots of meals in the kitchen which has every mod con you could ask for.The garden has a stunning view over the cathedral. The location of the cottage is ideal–central to the city so cafés and restaurants are just a stone throw away and supermarket and children’s park a five minute walk.We went on many beautiful walks around St.Davids from our doorstep. It’s a delightful cottage and location.

Lucy, Hook, Hampshire

We had a lovely stay in this cottage. It is a beautifully decorated home with every comfort in mind. We were lucky with the weather so spent some heavenly hours sitting in the stunning garden. What a gem. We hope to return.

Carey, london

We have stayed several times at this lovely cottage, it is tastefully decorated, well maintained and spotlessly clean. Since we were last there the sitting room now has a log burner which is great. The beds are extremely comfortable and the bathrooms spacious with lovely white fluffy towels. The kitchen is well equipped and all items are of a high spec. The shared garden is like an oasis, peaceful and beautifully kept. We look forward to our next visit .

Gill, Hook

This is the second time we have stayed at one of these lovely cottages....and we will be back again! The standards are so high. The kitchen is spotless clean and contains all the dishes, pots and pans and excesseries you will ever want, to feel totally at home! The meile washing machine and dryer are the best. Mattresses are very comfortable. The bathrooms are large, with separate shower and large tub, and of course heated towel racks, that are self controlled. Draw down window shades and heavy drapes.... We have stayed other places and this is the best.... Thanks, From Sam and Elaine

Adrianne Elaine, Sedona, Arizona,USA

This is the largest of the tastefully-decorated Ty Gwilym cottages. Facilities are modern and top-quality, including the comfortable beds. The kitchen has a large, wooden table for family gatherings, and the downstairs shower is useful when returning from Whitesands in sandy wetsuits! Upstairs, there are magnificent views across St David's to Carn Llidi. We enjoy dining al fresco, surrounded by lavender bushes in summer; in winter, we appreciate the central heating and cosy log burner. All amenities in St David's can be reached on foot, and Dawn, the great housekeeper, is on hand for advice.

Location

The neighbourhood

The cottages are a minute’s walk from the centre of a city that is charmingly small and unashamedly old-fashioned. Discover craft shops, food shops, restaurants and pubs, including the Farmer's Arms on the same street. The 12th-century cathedral, the finest in Wales, hides down a hill, and wonderful beaches abound – Whitesands, Caerfai, Abereiddi. Coastal walks are a ten-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Hamish Elvidge

  • Whitesand Bay is a wonderful sandy beach within five minutes drive and is great for surfing and sandcastles!
  • St Davids Cathedral is the focal point of the city and must be visited!
  • Great restaurants (for example Morgans and Cwtch) are plentiful in St Davids and the surrounding area.
  • A trip around Ramsey Island cannot be missed, to see the seals and, hopefully dolphins!
  • Abereiddi and the Blue Lagoon create a very unique atmosphere.
  • Pothgain is a unique, beautiful harbour, which has a really good restaurant (The Shed) and pub (The Sloop)
