The Experience

Follow a long track through the trees and this grand house emerges like something from a dream — restored after decades of slumber, it certainly hasn’t lost any of its soul. Inside, the bones are strong: a sweeping spiral staircase under soaring ceilings and a brass chandelier casting its glow over the huge dining table. Upstairs, six spacious double bedrooms are spread across two floors, each has a king-size bed dressed in soft Bonsoirs linens, an en suite bathroom and eco-friendly soaps.

Downstairs there’s space for everyone to sprawl: a bright, sunlit salon, and a cinema room with projector, streaming apps and video games. But when the sun shines you’ll want to be outside on the large terrace with its glorious pool, framed by views of old oaks.

There’s a serious barbecue for the al fresco cook, while inside, the kitchen has everything you need — Lacanche range cooker, large fridge-freezer and everything from a Nespresso machine to a Nutribullet.

Location

The neighbourhood

A 35 minutes walk through the woods takes you to the best local restaurant. Mouleydier village boulangerie (five-min drive) will deliver bread and croissants with 24 hours notice. Bergerac (15 mins) has supermarkets, restaurants and a fascinating historic centre. Canoe the Dordogne river, visit vineyards, explore the châteaux and prehistoric caves of the region - or hire bikes and ride the trails.

Local points of interest from Ariarne Pratt

  • Circular walks through our 120 acres forest - walk through the forest and the vines to the neighbouring estate Château Les Merles famous kitchen (about 35 mins there, 50 mins home again after lunch!).
  • Visit the many bastide towns and markets. Our favourite is Issigeac on a Sunday (18 mins).
  • There are purported to be 1,001 châteaux in the Dordogne: Château de Biron (45 mins), Château des Milandes (1h), Castelnaud (1h).
  • There are two rivers you can canoe down, the Dordogne and the Vézère. The rivers meet in Limeuil (35 mins). Some of the best castle views are from a canoe on the Dordogne River.
  • The Jardins de Marquessac - over 6km of pathways surrounded by over 150,000 hand-pruned boxwoods, with viewpoints over the Dordogne valley and châteaux.
  • The most famous prehistoric cave - Lascaux IV (1h10) is the only full and exact replica of the original cave in a contemporary museum.
