The Experience

Step into a light, bright, open-plan space with high beamed ceilings, cool tiled floors and a warming wood-burner for chilly evenings. There’s a fully equipped kitchen and a roomy table, but you’re welcome to use the outdoor kitchen too. If you don’t want to cook there are two chefs locally you can hire – one who cooks traditional French food, the other a lighter menu with tapas.

The bedroom is cleverly divided from the living space by partial wooden walls and curtains – it’s a tad quirky and cleverly done. The sparkling bathroom, with bath and shower, is completely separate. Wander the pretty gardens, nicely planted up for year-round interest; swim in the huge pool, toast yourselves on a sun lounger, barbecue in the evenings and eat al fresco. Mostly you’ll just hear birdsong and there are beehives, chickens and three friendly goats in the paddock.

A wonderful hideaway for two in glorious countryside. Walks will be sublime.

Location

The neighbourhood

From the barn you can walk to the river, into the woods and through vineyards. Canoeing, golf, tennis and electric bikes can all be organised when booking. There are around 20 restaurants within a five-minute drive – The Pessacquai is 3km, Château Carbonneau is 7km and there are several Michelin-starred restaurants in St Émilion. The bastide villages of Villefranche, Issigeac and Eymet are all a half-hour drive.

Local points of interest from Peter Cullen

  • Domaine des Monges is an 18th-century Manoir set on the beautiful Dordogne river. The landscaped gardens lead to private steps taking you down to the water's edge. The river is clean and safe for swimming, especially in front of our property.
  • Domaine des Monges is in the heart of the famous Bordeaux wine area. We can arrange wine tastings and winery visits. St Emilion is less than a 30-minute drive away and is a world-renowned wine destination and UNESCO classified village.
  • Our lodge is a perfect starting point for walks along the river and through the nearby vineyards. Canoes and e-bikes can be rented just down the river. There are two world-class golf courses nearby. Tennis can be arranged at a local court.
  • We are completely spoilt by the choice of restaurants around us, from riverside cafés to international level gourmet restaurants. Three of our local wineries offer food platters to accompany their great wines.
  • We have a tiny train station just down the road and trains run very regularly either in the direction of St Emilion/Bordeaux or towards Bergerac/Sarlat. Bordeaux is less than 1 hour by train and Sarlat a little more.

Introducing

Peter Cullen

Peter and Serge are warm and welcoming and passionate about their patch of paradise. They've filled their beautiful home with many interesting objects and paintings collected from their wide travels and created the most lovely garden. They have a friendly dog called George, bees busy making honey for the B&B guests, happy hens and three very sociable goats which you are welcome to say hello to.
