The setting is utterly lovely, with views pouring over steeply sloping ranks of vines, rolling hills and woodland. Caro and Seán’s passion for creating wine eventually led them to this ancient wine estate. They love sharing their heritage and enthusiasm (Caro teaches organic wine-growing methods) and will immerse you in the intricate and fascinating world of growing, creating and understanding wine. The Lodge, previously a ‘chai’ (winery), has been eco-consciously converted with special attention to the less mobile; inside are honeyed pine, stone walls and big windows for those marvellous views. The recently renovated Cottage shares the views and is equally comfortable with its airy living room, brand new kitchen, and private terrace. It’s a short walk to Saussignac to buy your daily bread, market day is Friday and there’s a good restaurant in the village. In fact, you could spend days here without using the car – a cycle ride along the Grande Randonnée, a stroll in the woods and vineyards in search of wild birds or wild mushrooms, a lazy afternoon’s reading beneath a shady fig.
