The Experience

Immerse yourselves in sunflower fields and woodland, with hens scratching about and ducks on the pond. You have your own private terrace and the large gardens are yours to wander: help yourselves to vegetables and fruit in season, collect eggs from the hens, float in the cooling pool or simply look for a special spot and sit with a book.

Children will love the games area and free bikes, and a special terrace above the pool where you can sit under the pergola (perhaps with something from one of the surrounding vineyards) while you keep watch over little swimmers.

It’s just 2kms to the nearest shops and there are medieval bastide towns to explore with colourful weekly markets. Bring your shopping back to kitchens with all the gear – eat inside or out with a barbecue under the stars.

We had the most wonderful stay at Duck Gite and would go back without any hesitation. Gill and Simon are fantastic hosts, there when you need them, but leaving you to enjoy your holiday. They have more toys and games than you could wish for, for all ages, which both our children enjoyed, the pool is perfect and just a few steps away from the gite, and the gite itself has everything you could possibly need. Duck gite was perfect for us with the bedrooms next to each other, but if you had older children Drake is bigger and would be perfect (although we’d have been happy there too).

Will and Sarah, Newcastle upon Tyne

We had a wonderful restful week in Duck cottage with our two teenage children. The cottage is well equipped and the gardens and poolside a haven of tranquillity. Although it would have been tempting not to step out of the gardens, we loved our visits to the nearby markets, the river and gentle walks to the village to buy bread. Gill and Simon are thoughtful, kind and knowledgeable hosts.

Alan, Salisbury

We try to visit Duck Cottage every year and we are never disappointed. Gill and Simon are wonderful hosts and make sure that everything is in tip top condition for our stay'. Duck is comprehensively equipped and furnished. It is set in quiet and extensive gardens, with the addition of a fabulous swimming pool, recently refurbished. An oasis of peace for a book read, a quiet nap or a cooling swim. Good shopping within a short car ride, together with a host of local wineries and restaurants reasonably close at hand. But a car is probably advisable. Children have a garden to enjoy safely.

Lucy, Salisbury

We had such a wonderful couple of weeks staying at Gite de Sevenne. We have a 4 year old boy and were made so welcome - toys and everything we needed in the gite, outside, by the pool. I think he is very keen to adopt our hosts Gill and Simon as additional grandparents! He had a wonderful time watching the chickens, picking fruit, eating the croissants delivered fresh in the mornings and racing round the beautiful gardens. The setting is beautiful and so relaxed some great stuff in the area for families at Chateau Brindoire, the goat farm, kayaking, biking and village festivals.

Location

The neighbourhood

This is a particularly peaceful setting in the Lot-et-Garonne with wildlife and many birds. Walks through pretty countryside spotting wild orchids in the fields and biking along quiet roads will be memorable. If you don't want to cook there's a good restaurant 2kms away, La Plaisance in St Barthélemy or Tombeboeuf has a good choice. Many of the local towns have night markets during the summer which are magical.

Local points of interest from Gill & Simon Webster

  • With its rolling hills, bastide villages, stunning gardens, wheat fields, sunflowers, fruit & nut orchards and friendly people, Lot et Garonne is reminiscent of Tuscany. It's a relatively undiscovered region of France with historical links to England!
  • A food and wine lover's paradise; Sévenne is within easy reach of the most famous French wine growing regions - Bordeaux, Medoc, Sauternes, St Emillion, Buzet, to name but a few! Most of the worlds foie gras, prunes & walnuts come from this region too!
  • The Aquitaine region is steeped in history. Temple sur Lot & Le Jardin des Nėuphars, where Monet found his inspiration for his garden! Châteaux and bastide villages are perched high and overlook the stunning landscape. Lots to see and do!
  • Artists, writers & nature lovers find the tranquil setting inspirational; paint the sunflowers, listen to the numerous varieties of birds, watch red squirrels, read books from the library. Or just relax and recharge your batteries beside the 12x6m pool!
  • For the more active there are theme / water parks, (Parc en Ciel, Parc des Pirates, Walibi), canoeing, cycling, ballooning, all within an hour’s drive. Horse riding in the village & golf 10 mins away. Or stay and enjoy our 2.7 acre garden.
  • Activities at Sévenne include; table tennis, swimming pool and water games, badminton, volleyball, darts, football, boules, trampoline, swings, bicycles.
