The Experience

Find a pleasing mix of antique and contemporary furniture alongside exposed stone walls, gnarled beams and solid oak or tomette floors. The living room has a small library, backgammon and a chess set, and the table in the room next door is big enough to work on if you need to. Sit under the tile-covered awning attached to the old barn even when it’s raining, reading a book or attempting a jigsaw. The walled garden has furnished patios (some covered and with heaters), a small lawn, rose garden and swimming pool.

Bedrooms (one on the ground floor, two on the first) have lovely views, rich fabrics, art on the walls and smart bathrooms. You breakfast in the garden on sunny days: fresh fruit salad, pastries and breads, local fromage blanc, homemade granola, eggs if you like. A table d’hôte dinner can be organised in advance, made with lots of fresh local produce and as organic as possible.

A little corner of the Med in the heart of the Burgundy countryside. We love Ariane's bonhomie, home-cooked meals and her delightful property.

Location

The neighbourhood

It's a quiet French village with a veg grower, cheesemaker and the promise of an épicerie opening soon. There are several good restaurants within 15km and a traditional one 6km away. This is glorious Yonne countryside for walking and cycling surrounded by nature. Fontenay Abbey is a half-hour drive, as are the Chablis vineyards. Visit many châteaux.

Local points of interest from Ariane Mellink

  • Gigny is small authentic village with a beautiful church with a twisted churchspire. There is a small Proximarché supermarket, furthermore a local vegetable grower and a cheesemaker where you can buy organic products 2/3 times per week.
  • Within 30 minutes driving you can explore four different wine regions, Chablis, Epineuil, Cremants de Bourgogne and the southern vineyards of Champagne near les Riceys. Why not try an e-bike vineyards tour from Chablis!
  • Visit the Renaissance castles of Ancy-le-France, Tanlay and Maulnes, all within a 15 minute drive. A must see is the Cistercian Abbey of Fontenay, a World Unesco Heritage site.
  • Wander around characteristic Burgundian villages and medieval towns, such as Noyers, Chablis, Tonnerre, Semur-en- Auxois and Vezelay. Tip: visit the Sunday morning gourmet market in Chablis or the market in the old medieval centre of Semur-en-Auxois.
  • Within driving distance there are several restaurants with traditional french cuisine, also restarurants with a Michelin star or Bib Gourmand and one with a green star, Le Garde Champêtre.
  • Outdoor activities: Nice 1 hour walk around the lake of Marcenay, cycle to the Canal de Bourgogne for a (flat!) ride along beautiful chateaux and countryside. Go swimming, canoeing, kayaking, or pick one of the nearby golf courses.
