The Experience

Behind wrought-iron gates in quiet Aubepierre-sur-Aube, a pair of delightful cottages with revealed stone façades and walled gardens – La Tonnellerie sleeps four, and L’Entrepot is for five (plus another child) – come as a big group and take them together. Communal rooms in each are pretty and open-plan, mixing original features – flagged floors and raw beams, stone fireplaces – with wood-burners, coffee tables and comfy sofas. In the smaller of the two, La Tonnellerie, find one twin/double on the first floor and the master at the top; L’Entrepot has its double and two twins on the first floor. Warm friendly owners Tim and Sarah, whose holiday home is here too, are sticklers for detail, so count on fine linen and fresh towels. Best of all are the gardens. Sunny days mean lazy hours in your own private garden (entrance through the back door of each gite) or by the walled pool, flanked by trees and shared by both cottages. Stroll across crisp, secluded lawns to the wilder meadows beyond, where you’ll find an orchard (if it’s ripe, help yourself), a gigantic kids climbing frame, a grass badminton court and a fascinating old dovecote. Bike or hike the wooded, rolling winelands of Burgundy and Champagne, or drive 30 minutes to Langres or Chaumont for museums, markets and cathedrals.

Reviews

Hannah, Eastbourne

It's no small feat to keep everyone happy in a family of five, but the combination of a beautiful property and outstanding hosting gave us a very special family holiday. Our children were thrilled with the freedom and space they had to enjoy the pool, climbing frame, orchard and table tennis. Cycling-mad Dad enjoyed fabulous bike rides in stunning countryside with advice from Tim on the best local routes (including boulangerie stops for fresh croissants). And Mum spent countless hours by the beautiful pool, and appreciated special touches like fresh flowers in the bedroom and lovely bed linen.

We absolutely loved our week at La Tonnellerie - it’s the perfect place to relax for a week. The photos don’t do it justice, the gîte has everything you need and the grounds are beautiful. We loved walking our dog through the forest, stopping off for a swim in the natural swimming spot and then lounging by the pool in the afternoons. Tim and Sarah are excellent hosts and even organised reservations for us. We can’t wait to come back!

We absolutely loved our stay here. The house is gorgeous and full of beautiful furniture and everything you need. My children absolutely loved the climbing frame and the pool. The surrounding area was beautiful in the autumn and we had a fabulous time exploring the nearby cities and towns. Sarah was absolutely fantastic at communicating with us. Highly recommend!

Sarah, St Albans

We have just returned home from a week in L'Entrepot - what a find! Beautifully furnished and decorated, well equipped and spotlessly clean! Sarah & Tim, the owners, were also on site staying in their holiday home next door and they were so welcoming, helpful and friendly. The pool is stunning and, although shared with the other guests, there is plenty of space for everyone and a more than adequate supply of sunbeds and parasols (which we definitely needed with temperatures in the high 30's!). We are now considering returning next year with friends and renting both properties!

Tommy, Brussels

The perfect antidote to a hectic few months. Our two boys loved the house and grounds, picking cherries in the orchard, playing in the treehouse, admiring the myriad of butterflies and hours by the pool. The location is ideal to get away from it all, with a river and forest nearby and little villages dotted around the valley. There are lovely running routes on very quiet roads too. We had pizza from the pizza van in nearby Arc and there is a good butcher for bbq evenings at home. If you are looking to escape, this place is hard to beat. Thanks to Tim and Sarah, who were great hosts.

Local points of interest from Sarah Groves

  • Historic towns of Troyes, Chaumont, Langres, Beaune and Dijon are well worth visiting, especially on their buzzing market days.
  • Four raised vegetable beds in the Pigeonnier field supply a mixture of tomatoes, salads and courgettes. Visitors are encouraged to use and “re-sow” after they have harvested and are also invited to help themselves to the raspberries mid summer!
  • Plenty of Brocante markets all summer long in local villages. Always authentic bargains to be had.
  • In France's latest National Park, 'Parc National de forêts en Champagne et Bourgogne', it is an area of natural beauty. The cycling for road bikes and mountain bikes is fabulous in the area.. Such quiet roads and tracks, and beautiful rolling countryside.
  • Guests can forage for ceps and truffles in the forests during Autumn and then spend relaxing evenings by the wood burner.
  • River running through Aubepierre, from the source of the Seine, offers a delightful alternative to the outdoor pool. The plunge pool ('empêlement') near the weir at the end of the village is a favourite place for locals to cool off during hot summers.

Introducing

Sarah Groves

Sarah and her family live in the Great Barn next door to The Stables, and you're welcome to share the garden with them. She’ll leave you everything you need for your first breakfast and basics for cooking in the kitchen. At their French place, Le Domaine Richot, you’ll have friendly caretaker Catherine on hand if you need anything. She lives nearby and can deliver croissants for your first morning too.
