The Experience

This is a place built for lingering. The open-plan living space beckons with deep sofas and a generous dining table. Cooking is a joy: a Smeg range, a separate wine fridge and (almost) every gadget under the sun – from a chocolate fountain to an ice crusher. Outside, your ‘summer kitchen’ has an Argentinian barbecue, wood-fired pizza oven and paella burner. There’s a table under the walnut tree for al fresco meals.

Upstairs, five en suite bedrooms have crisp linens on comfy beds, high ceilings and oak floors; one has a freestanding bath, another bunk beds alongside a double for family stays.

Dive into the heated pool or relax on the covered terrace where an outdoor cinema screen pulls down for movie nights. Pétanque, archery, table tennis and bicycles will keep you busy – you can also wander down to see the owner’s horses. On arrival, a seriously good hamper of local wine, cheese, saucisson, honey and coffee awaits.

I'd adore to have a week chilling at L'Ancienne Écurie. It's got every luxury, space, super comfortable beds and bathrooms. The pool area is amazing, and with sofas under the covered terrace for watching films or just chilling. The neighbourhood

Nearby Castelnau-Riviere-Basse (three-minute drive) has a café/bar, épicerie, pharmacy, post office and tennis court. Madiran's vineyards are all around, with the Pyrenees close by. A local farm makes its own cheese and butter, with animals to pet. Plaisance (12-min drive) has a supermarket, mini golf and a choice of restaurants, and there’s kayaking on the river Adour.

Ian & Angela Thompson

Angela and Ian swapped careers in the police force and running a shop in Yorkshire for the château over a decade ago, and have poured their energy into restoring it ever since. They live in the château itself and are on hand throughout your stay, whether that's a tour of the grounds, an introduction to their horses or just making sure everything runs smoothly.
