The Experience
Gaze across the wooded valley to the gentle Quercy hills; crack open the welcome bottle of wine. The setting is stunning and the blackbirds sing. You cannot help but unwind.
This rustic, stylish, 18th-century barn comes with its own barbecue terrace, and exclusive use of the owners’ pool. Your living space is light and lofty, your en suite bedrooms – one up, one down – serene, and your well-equipped kitchen the bees-knees. Penny and Patrick work at their restaurant in Montcuq during the day, so the whole place feels like yours.
Montcuq, cobblestoned capital of the Quercy Blanc, is full of good places to eat; Lauzerte, a 15-minute drive, is equally charming. This gentle region, wedged between Bordeaux, Toulouse and the Lot, teems with small, often organic, food and wine producers… get your bread in Castelnau from the wood-fired oven. Your hosts will recommend all their favourites.

The area is both beautiful and interesting, with plenty to offer visitors, while the gîte itself is absolutely delightful: brilliantly designed, decorated with flair, superbly appointed and equipped, and offering an idyllic view during the day and a magical starry sky at night. Even the pool has a view. Penny and Patrick are charming, friendly hosts and made us welcome without ever intruding. We recommend Le Saltre in the warmest possible terms.

Penny and Patrick are very welcoming yet discrete hosts, even providing us with an evening meal as we were arriving late. The gite is beautifully furnished and perfect for a relaxing holiday. Sole use of their swimming pool is a really nice touch. The surrounding countryside is lovely with gentle walks straight from the gite and plenty of towns, villages and vineyards to visit, including Penny and Patrick’s restaurant in Montcuq. Don’t miss the freshly baked walnut bread from the local mill/farm.

We just spent an idyllic week at Le Saltre Gite. The Gite is beautiful with gorgeous furnishings and every convenience you could need (air con, walk in wardrobe, laundry, gas barbecue, even citronella candles for the terrace!) The location is equally stunning with amazing views across the countryside by day and of the stars at night and a large pool set in a lavender scented garden. Montcuq is 15 mins away with a range of shops and eateries (including the owners’ wonderful restaurant). All in all a great place to switch off and recharge your batteries. Thoroughly recommend!

We have just had a lovely week’s holiday here. Penny and Patrick made us very welcome. The gite has been stylishly and sympathetically renovated and is very well appointed and comfortable. It is set in a beautiful spot and we never tired of the view. We enjoyed exploring the local towns, Montcuq being our favourite with the added attraction of Penny and Patrick’s restaurant, a great place to sit and have a coffee and people watch or to eat. We enjoyed our stay very much.

Location
The neighbourhood
In off-the-beaten-track Quercy, the barn (all yours) and house are surrounded by 70 acres of field, forest and views. Follow the trails; one leads to an old windmill with a view of the Pyrenees on a clear day. Lovely old Montcuq, 11km, has a fabulous market on Sundays - and a swimming lake. It's also home to the owners' restaurant. Castelnau is closest for shops; a gorgeous golf course is 3km.
Local points of interest from Penny & Patrick Henrotin
- There is something for everyone. The hamlet of Le Saltre is ideally located between Castelnau Montratier, Montcuq and Lauzerte. Walks through woodland and sunflower fields straight from the front door. You may see a deer or two grazing in the background
- A 10-minute drive to Montcuq, a popular tourist attraction, cobblestoned streets, a buzzing Sunday market, restaurants and cafes where one can relax with a glass of wine, a coffee or even enjoy a chilled glass of Fenelon, a traditional Quercy appetiser.
- A short drive to Castelnau, full of peaks and valleys, the houses here with boletus terraces and Mediterranean roofs have a charm. The dome of Saint-Martin’s Church is reminiscent of Sacre Coeur in Montmartre. Golf on a hilly 9 holes, par 70 course.
- A 15-minute drive to Lauzerte, stopover for pilgrims, perched above the valleys and hills of Quercy Blanc. 12th century village, a path leading to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. A short drive to Moissac, with its world heritage 12c abbey and cloister.
- Enjoy a day in Cahors, town on the Lot river, known for its Pont Valentre, a medieval bridge with 3 towers. The old town features narrow alleyways, imposing Cathedrale St-Etienne. You can even take a boat trip on the river Lot during the Summer.
- Drive along the banks of the river Lot through wonderful gorges, visit the beautiful village of Saint-Cirq-La-Popie perched high on the cliff or cycle along the river Lot. A day trip to Rocamadour or simply sample the unique flavours of Cahors Malbec wine

Introducing
Penny & Patrick Henrotin
Patrick (Belgian) and Penny (from London with Indian background) live on site, leave you a generous selection of food, and are more than happy to chat whenever they are around. She was originally in HR, he was an accountant, and in 2004 they upped sticks from the UK to run a restaurant in Montcuq - the very popular Café de France. Discreet and delightful hosts, they love food, wine, and golf.
A lovely location, tucked away in a lesser known area, with lovely villages just 10 minutes away. Walks up in the woods and fields behind the perfect Gîte especially at sunset are a delight. Penny has thought of everything in the Gîte, there is nothing else you could wish for. We were lucky to arrive as she was making apricot jam! Both she and Patrick are perfect hosts, discreet, yet friendly and helpful…don’t forget to eat in their restaurant in Montcuq!
