The Experience

Sitting next to a historic château lovingly restored by its English owners, this two-bedroom gîte pairs antique pieces with bags of modern comfort. Super king beds have handcrafted organic wool mattresses, air conditioning keeps rooms cool throughout the summer, and the airy sitting room looks out over the pool on one side and open countryside on the other.

The kitchen has all the kit for keen cooks or you can leave the work to a private chef from Toulouse, who will come to you (book ahead, he’s in demand). The garden terrace has a barbecue, while the roof terrace at the top of the tower has a pizza oven for evenings under the stars.

Beyond the house, there are 17 acres of parkland, fields and woodland to explore. Take a dip in the shared saltwater pool, enjoy a game of petanque or table tennis in the shade (you’ll share with guests from the other gîte). A Voie Romaine footpath leads from the grounds into town – a lovely stroll for lunch.

I was especially lucky to be invited to spend the night in Latour. We were most warmly welcomed and delighted with the charm and tasteful comfort of this beautifully restored gîte: the thoughtful details, the books, the fine prints, the fabrics, the old beams and the blissful peace at the end of the day. We especially appreciated wandering round the gardens in the shade of the mighty oak trees.

Location

The neighbourhood

Walk (30 mins) or drive (five mins) to Puylaurens for markets, bakeries and restaurants. Toulouse is three quarters of an hour, Albi and Carcassonne about an hours’ drive. Head to Castres (30 min) for rugby, art and brocantes, or explore hilltop Lautrec (25 min), famous for its pink garlic and cobbled streets. Sorèze (20 min) is worth a visit for its Dom Robert tapestries and beautiful glass museum.

Local points of interest from Sarah Hughes

  • The property is situated in 7 hectares of gardens and ancient woodland, which leads directly onto the Voie Romaine (an ancient footpath created by the Romans during their occupation).
  • Within the grounds of the property is a medieval fountain, believed to have miraculous healing properties and the site of former Roman baths (later turned into lavoirs by the de Gineste family).
  • Close to the village etape of Puylaurens, 'birthplace' of Marianne and a Protestant stronghold during the Wars of Religion (the original owners of the Chateau were prominent Protestant noblemen).
  • Situated in the 'golden triangle' of Toulouse, Albi and Carcassonne, this area is known as the French Tuscany and/or the Pays de Cocagne and is dotted with ancient Churches, Pigeonniers and evidence of the wealth of the Pastel Industry.
  • The nearby town of Revel has a famous market, nominated one of the most beautiful markets in France. The inner belfry is reserved for local producers and is renowned for the quality of its produce - much of it organic.
  • The gites themselves are situated within the grounds of Chateau Mirabel, a chateau built in the First Empire Style by King's Musketeer Philippe Latour Dejean whose initials can still be seen on the courtyard gates.

Helen’s daughters Sarah and Gemma gave up careers in teaching and law to join their mother in restoring this property. Expect a warm welcome and bags of enthusiasm as they continue improvements to the estate, from repairing old fountains to creating a productive vegetable garden.
