The Experience

Sheep graze behind this old bergerie in the grounds of your hosts’ manor house. Cook al fresco in a rustic, open kitchen on the covered terrace; enjoy breakfast, dinner or sharing platters here overlooking the beautiful garden with its huge linden trees – a very special treat.

The suite is light, lofty and beamed; the little Bergère will bring you close to nature – leave the top part of the stable door open and watch the stars come out one by one. On chilly days light the wood-burning stove and plan your next adventures.

Stroll through the garden and orchard to find bee hives, chicken and sheep. Hike through gentle, rolling countryside with munching cows and donkeys. Hop in the car for farmers’ markets, superb old churches and a magnificent beach at Trouville.

Reviews

Beautiful, peaceful place to stay deep in the luscious green Normandy countryside. We stayed in the delightful bergere, with its very comfy bed, wonderful shower and we found sleeping with the top of the stable door open such a special experience: owls, sheep, birdsong - bliss. Hetty made us a beautful and delicious meal, served by Ruud on a pretty terrace, and breakfast was also delicious. We cannot fault this place to stay and the wonderful, welcoming hosts. Hopefully, we will return there soon!

Jo, Melton Mowbray

Lovely place to stay deep in the countryside . Dinner and breakfast, both excellent, served on our private terrace

Liz and William, Wisbech

We stayed at this amazing place with our three Goldens. From arrival Hetty and Ruud were the perfect hosts. So welcoming. The room was comfortable and clean and had finer touches like fresh flowers, perfect. An amazing dinner was provided to a small seating area outside the room. In the morning Breakfast was one of the best we have had even better than some of the Hotels we have stayed in. Fresh bread, croissants, fresh fruit, juice and eggs. Even the dogs were given a special treat. Would highly recommend and well worth going slightly off route to find it. Thank you Hetty and Ruud.

Anna & Dennis, UK

We stayed at the Bergerie de la Moutonnière on our way back to the UK from a trip to France. Hetty and Ruud were perfect hosts - kind, relaxed and so welcoming! Everything was most thoughtfully set up, from oodles of games for the children, through to the extremely comfortable beds. And the most delicious breakfast with croissants, fresh fruit and home made jam and juice! We were just looking for a convenient place to break our journey home, but instead we found a haven we will go out of our way to return to!

Matt, Cambridge

We stayed for one night on our way through France and onwards to Spain. We also Stayed again on our return journey. Hetty and Ruud were wonderful and generous hosts. They were warm, affable and jolly and made us feel welcome including our dog Maxim. Hetty cooked us a lovely meal both times and they were both very attentive. The Bergerie was lovely and rustic and well equipped. We would and indeed will stay again - highly recommended, a Sawdays gem.

Paul, Fowey, Cornwall

My wife and I stayed with Ruud and Hetty in September last year. They are both charming and nothing was too much trouble. We saw a lot of Ruud especially when he brought us breakfast which was delicious. It came with fruit, croissants, coffee, etc etc . He's seen a lot of life and has a great sense of humour. They also have a robotic electric mower who is earnest in his work and goes about it quietly and is no trouble to anyone. He is not a linguist! PS The location is stunning!

Tim, London

We stayed at Bergerie de la Moutonniere for 3 nights. It is a delightful, peaceful and unique find. It is a lovely spot to explore this tranquil part of Normandy and the coastal towns. Try Hetty's ice cream with home made prunes in Armagnac, amazing!

Francesca, Lewes

An absolutely delightful stay! Hetty and Ruud are the consummate hosts; helpful with their suggestions but not intrusive. We had the whole property to ourselves and the atmosphere of la Bergerie is total bliss. What could be better than waking up to a cacophony of bird song and some of Ruud and Hetty's delicious apple juice? We self catered and loved the outdoor kitchen and one evening used the barbecue. A heavenly place to stay with lots to do in the region - highly recommended!

Carolyn and Steve, Twickenham

A wonderful place to spend an autumn week - a tranquil haven in beautiful grounds with generous, amiable hosts Hetty and Ruud. Unique accommodation with every comfort; the wood-burning stove particularly welcome for the chillier evenings. Nothing is too much trouble for the hosts, and we hope to return in the better weather.

Elaine, Heswall Wirral

We stayed with Hetty & Ruud twice in last year. Once mid December 2021 and the other in August 2022. Superb hosts from welcome to departure, as well as when booking. Food super and delivered to the room. Huge garden/land for dogs to exercise. Very comfy and well furnished rooms. We will stay there again and have recommended to others.

Steve & Isa, Suffolk

This was our final stop before heading home and what a magical way to end our holiday. Hetty and Ruud were wonderful hosts and the Bergerie is just delightful - comfortable and full of thoughtful touches for a very special stay. I can’t recommend it more and hope to be able to come back again.

Arabella, London

Excellent. Two lovely hosts - Hetty and Ruud - with a real commitment to making your stay with them something to remember. Ruud with his unique humour is an honorary englishman!! We were made to feel special and we will not hesitate to return and to recommend it even to our enemies....!!!!

Nick & Beth, East Twickenham

This is a very special place! A true sanctuary set in peaceful grounds. The hosts couldn’t be more helpful and friendly. My cat enjoyed her stay here too and the breakfast was delicious and delivered to my room. I will definitely be making a return visit.

Christine, Arundel

Well, the reviews speak for themselves! A truly special place to stay and well worth a visit if you're in the area, or make a visit if you're not! Ruud and Hetty are lovely hosts and couldn't make you feel more welcome (our dog is still pining after Hugo!). It's a great spot to relax and unwind but also to explore surrounding areas if you want to. The rooms are beautifully decorated and all in all, we couldn't have had a nicer stay. We would love to come back and visit! Thank you Hetty and Ruud.

Claire, Reigate

What a gorgeous place, run by a gorgeous couple. This was our first stop on our French road trip and we left feeling utterly relaxed. Amazing accommodation with unique and refined attention to detail. The breakfasts were served al fresco and were divine. Yum! Hetty and Ruud and Hugo (their adorable dog) made our daughter and dog feel so welcome. If you’re in the area it’s an absolute must. We loved every minute. Great hosts (.... great stories from Ruud!)

Pamela, London

We were bedazzled by the atmosphere of the place and by all the careful and delicate attentions of our hosts. Refined materials, a strong sense of hospitality (from offering an outdoor alcove to have breakfast under to our dinner brought to us, outside, in front of a woodfire). The calm, the nearby forest’s noises, the starry night visible from our bed (with the top section of the stable door open). An extraordinary and romantic place for nature lovers. A warm thank you to Hetty and her fun and charming husband. A place we would love to come back.

Fab & Fred, Normandy

A fabulous place to stay. Warmly welcomed by Hetty; our room had everything from a comfy bed to an espresso coffee machine ;breakfast was peaceful ' a deux' as well as delicious and the setting was unique! I would highly recommend this B and B. A shame we only had one night here!

Sara, Forest Row

We had a fantastic stay at the Bergerie last summer. The accommodation is wonderfully appointed and it is situated in a lovely, peaceful rural location. Hetty and her husband Ruud were excellent hosts. They were happy for our toddler and dog to roam around their beautiful garden and even entertained them both, giving us a few precious moments to ourselves. Breakfast was absolutely delicious. We will definitely return when we are next in Normandy. Thank you for making us feel so at home.

Emma-Louise, London

Delightful spot in the green heart of Normandy that dissolves the stresses of life and puts a contented smile on your face. Hosts Ruud and Hetty complete the experience with their kind and thoughtful efforts … pass me a croissant :-)

Guy

Wonderful setting, such a warm host and delicious breakfasts. Hetty was an absolute star (Rudolph, we sadly didn't meet as he was not around at the time) and we loved her lovingly restored bergerie so much we are returning again this year and staying longer. The large grounds are beautiful and we hope for better weather this year so we can enjoy them more. Hetty was also very accommodating of our small family and our two young girls slept soundly in the cot and bed upstairs while we enjoyed twilight with blankets and wine on the terrace. Faultless!

Location

The neighbourhood

It's very rural here so the walking is easy with plenty of animals to spot and birds to watch. Just a short drive away is a nice village called Cormeilles which has very good restaurants and a lively market on Friday mornings. In the summer there are farmers' markets on Sundays with music and dancing.

Local points of interest from Rudolf Walthaus

  • Trouville with a wonderful sandy beach, where you can eat the freshest seafood you've ever tasted. Deauville with every morning a lively market or visit the Hippodrome for a horse race or a polo match.
  • If you like castles, you'll love Château du Champ de Bataile, 17th century. Magnificent gardens with fountains and topiaries. Have a high tea there. Combine this with the Harcourt Castle and Arboretum. The picturesque Benedictine Abbey in Le Bec-Hellouin.
  • A picturesque harbor, a maze of leafy, cobbled streets and authentic timber-framed houses. Around kunchtime; head to the Vieux Bassin and visit the iconic Église Sainte-Catherine. Easy to see why the Impressionists fell in love with Honfleur.
  • There are many must see locations in Normandy, such as the landing beaches at Arromanches and Omaha. The Memorial in Caen and the Bayeux tapestry is also well worth a visit. The Bergerie is only 10 minutes from a beautiful Zoo.
  • Visit Giverny with the house and gardens of Monet. Such a lovely place! Rouen, less then one hour from the Bergerie. The town of Jeanne d'Arc and the restored Cathédrale de Nôtre-Dame which is one of the best known cathédrales in France.
  • From the Bergerie to the Eiffel Tower is only 160km... or relax and unwind on the wooden sun beds in the garden of the Bergerie. We want to ensure you have a wonderful time with us, so please contact us with any questions you may have.

Introducing

Rudolf Walthaus

Rudolf and Hetty bought this place, along with nearly three hectares, as a family holiday home many years ago. They restored the house meticulously and created the wonderful garden from scratch, then decided to live here permanently. They have never regretted it and love sharing their little slice of rural bliss with guests.
