The
Experience

Sheep graze behind this old bergerie in the grounds of your hosts’ manor house. Cook al fresco in a rustic, open kitchen on the covered terrace; breakfast (you can order a hamper to be delivered) or dinner here overlooking the beautiful garden with its huge linden trees is a very special treat.

The suite is light, lofty and beamed; the little Bergère will bring you close to nature – leave the top part of the stable door open and watch the stars come out one by one. On chilly days light the wood-burning stove and plan your next adventures.

Stroll through the garden and orchard to find bee hives, chicken and sheep. Hike through gentle, rolling countryside with munching cows and donkeys. Hop in the car for farmers’ markets, superb old churches and a magnificent beach at Trouville.

Reviews

We were bedazzled by the atmosphere of the place and by all the careful and delicate attentions of our hosts. Refined materials, a strong sense of hospitality (from offering an outdoor alcove to have breakfast under to our dinner brought to us, outside, in front of a woodfire). The calm, the nearby forest’s noises, the starry night visible from our bed (with the top section of the stable door open). An extraordinary and romantic place for nature lovers. A warm thank you to Hetty and her fun and charming husband. A place we would love to come back.

Fab & fred, Normandy

A fabulous place to stay. Warmly welcomed by Hetty; our room had everything from a comfy bed to an espresso coffee machine ;breakfast was peaceful ' a deux' as well as delicious and the setting was unique! I would highly recommend this B and B. A shame we only had one night here!

Sara, Forest row

We had a fantastic stay at the Bergerie last summer. The accommodation is wonderfully appointed and it is situated in a lovely, peaceful rural location. Hetty and her husband Ruud were excellent hosts. They were happy for our toddler and dog to roam around their beautiful garden and even entertained them both, giving us a few precious moments to ourselves. Breakfast was absolutely delicious. We will definitely return when we are next in Normandy. Thank you for making us feel so at home.

Emma-louise, London

Our only regret was having to leave. Set in extensive grounds it comprises of a bedroom/suite with vaulted ceiling, dining table and sofa. A good size shower room. The cooking/dining area is open on one side providing views of large grounds. In very good condition the Bergerie reflects the good taste of the owners. Hetty & Ruud are superb hosts. Recommend breakfast, most of which is produced on the property. We loved returning to the peace & tranquility of the Bergerie after a day out. It is dog friendly. We recommend you stay here as a base when visiting Normandy. We will be returning.

Like New York, so good we went there twice. On the way down and on the way back. 5 star accommodation. Very dog friendly. The setting/gardens are lovely, birds, dawn chorus, but tranquil and quiet, Delightful caring hosts. Make sure you book an evening meal as Hetty is a superb cook.

Elizabeth, Winchester

Quite the loveliest Sawday place we have ever stayed in! Truly magical, we felt we had landed in paradise and cannot wait to return. Hetty and Rud were so kind and thoughtful to us all as we fell dripping onto their driveway after a long hot car journey. They accepted two tinies of 1 and 3 without question and were so sweet to them. Nothing was too much trouble and the attention to detail in the accommodation is second to none. Delicious evening meal and breakfast .....I can't say more in case they get so booked up we cannot return!

Charlotte, Milton keynes

This place is amazing, the calm tranquility of the location, the kind welcoming charm of Hetty and Ruud, the quality of the furnishinga and the attention to detail of ... Well ... Of everything really. We stayed for two delightfully restfull days and made sure we reserved another week later in the year. In a nutshell fantastic!

Deborah, Castelmoron sur lot

I have visited twice now - and this is a slice of heaven: utterly peaceful and magical - all made possible by the two most delightful hosts, Hetty and Rud. It is a place built with love, and I feel restored when I have stayed. I shall keep coming back, come wind or shine. Every detail is thought of, and to breakfast in one's outside dining room is simply a joy. I can recommend Hetty's cooking in the evening - especially the "French chicken" - otherwise known as duck - but it fools perhaps picky children! I know, if you come and stay here, you will want to come back - as I shall!

Emma, Fordingbridge

A truly magical place with wonderful hospitality. This is our second visit and can't wait for the next. Hettie and Rud are the perfect host and hostess to make for a wonderful stay. Cannot recommend highly enough

Alison, London

Our family (2 adults, 7yo son, and golden retriever) stayed in the Bergerie. I cannot say enough positive things about Hetty and Ruud and their property - it was incredibly peaceful and bucolic, the breakfasts were wonderful in the outdoor kitchen, and both "kids" were spoiled by Hetty and Ruud and loved having plenty of room to run around and play. We have compared every stay since with this one and none have measured up. We miss it everyday and cannot wait to return! Thank you, Hetty & Ruud!

Megan, Stuttgart

We stayed in the cute little bedroom with the stable door. It was lovely! Comfortable bed, good shower, wi-fi, lovely view of the garden, yummy breakfast, delicious dinner, friendly hosts! Thank you.

Jane

Hetty & Ruud are great hosts, very welcoming & helpful. The accommodation is very comfortable with a good hot shower & a wonderful cooked breakfast. We enjoyed walking through the grounds & relaxing in the sun. We stayed for a week & we would thoroughly recommend this B&B. to everyone.

Wendy

A great place to break a long journey. We received a lovely welcome from Hetty &Ruud who were very friendly and made us feel at home from the start. Delicious dinner and breakfast and very comfortable accommodation with all the touches of a 5 star hotel. It's a pity we were only able to stay for one night but a most enjoyable experience and our dog enjoyed it too.

Rupert

We stayed in La Bergere separate to the main house- it was a lovely room with stable doors opening on to their huge and beautiful gardens. The bed was extremely comfortable. The hosts couldn't have been more friendly or welcoming and the evening meal they cooked us was delicious and really good value. It was a beautiful spot in Calvados and we'd recommend staying here to anyone. Breakfast was also great- wish we could've stayed longer!

Sarah

Delightful spot in the green heart of Normandy that dissolves the stresses of life and puts a contented smile on your face. Hosts Ruud and Hetty complete the experience with their kind and thoughtful efforts … pass me a croissant :-)

Guy

A lovely place to stay, peace and quite in the Normandy countryside. Accommodation very clean and comfortable. wonderful, friendly hosts, would most certainly return.

Neil

Wonderful setting, such a warm host and delicious breakfasts. Hetty was an absolute star (Rudolph, we sadly didn't meet as he was not around at the time) and we loved her lovingly restored bergerie so much we are returning again this year and staying longer. The large grounds are beautiful and we hope for better weather this year so we can enjoy them more. Hetty was also very accommodating of our small family and our two young girls slept soundly in the cot and bed upstairs while we enjoyed twilight with blankets and wine on the terrace. Faultless!

Location

The neighbourhood

It's very rural here so the walking is easy with plenty of animals to spot and birds to watch. Just a short drive away is a nice village called Cormeilles which has very good restaurants and a lively market on Friday mornings. In the summer there are farmers' markets on Sundays with music and dancing.

Introducing

Rudolf Walthaus

Rudolf and Hetty bought this place, along with nearly three hectares, as a family holiday home many years ago. They restored the house meticulously and created the wonderful garden from scratch, then decided to live here permanently. They have never regretted it and love sharing their little slice of rural bliss with guests.
